Located in a favorable position, Imperia owes its name to the river Impero, that separates Oneglia from Porto Maurizio, which once were rival villages, now merged into one policy. Porto Maurizio (foreground), perched on the promontory of Parasio important economic center in the Middle Ages, was in the past, free city. Oneglia (in background) instead, founded after the year one thousand, fief of the bishop of Albenga, subsequently sold to the Doria family of Genoa, was sold in 1576, the Savoy. The rivalry between the two centers is expressed through the centuries turned into commercial competition, the feud between the families, the different administrative organization, due to the loyalty of Porto Maurizio to the Genoese, Oneglia to the Savoy. The overcoming of this rivalry dates back to 1923 and finds evidence in the town hall, built on an equidistant location on the road connecting the two centers.
