In the heart of Giverny at 300 meters off the Monet Museum and 150 meters of the Musée des Impressionnismes (the former Terra Museum of American Art), Alice Butler in 1926 turned her modest XVII th century farm into a “maison de charme”.
This house which appears in one of Monet’s paintings of the “Grainstacks series” is located next doors to her father’s, the american impressionist painter, Theodore E. Butler and a few coblestones of her grand’parents, the Monets where she grew up.
Nowaydays, a private gate and parking leads to the house and its cottage garden, a part (about 1000 m2) of which is exclusively reserved for you. This space provides and warrants you quietness and privacy, inviting you to read a book under generous trees sheltering a lot of birds. Garden lovers will be interested in some exotic and native plants. Interesting detail: the original genuine farm trough is still here. Near a young linden-tree stands a place where you can barbecue delicious pic-nics which will make your dinner parties with your friends, the most enjoyable moments and generate warm memories.
The historical background which leads you to forgotten times, does not prevent this house from offering you up-to-date comfort: large parking, large apartment, comfortable bathroom, internet, TV, private telephone line, Art library, etc...
The Normandy changing light wrapping its landscapes, the immense part plaid by the water is stunning. The Seine river, the Epte, the Eure, the Risle, and so many lovely streams explain how it has been so inspiring not only for Monet, but for a lot of artists from all over Europe and United States.
Cycling, boating, horse riding are easily available as well as golf courses. What really would make your stay unforgettable is a nice walk up to Richard-Coeur-de-Lion’s eyrie at Chateau-Gaillard, a visit at the unexpected troglodyte church in Haute-Isle or following the Seine river to get to the beautiful mills of Andé and Connelles. Further away, enjoy the visit of Chartres cathedral, Bayeux tapestry, Mont-Saint-Michel and the moving Normandy D-Day-battles 1944 settings. Nearby rush to Chateau-de-Versailles and the magnificent Paris after 45 minutes by train. Locally attend the Giverny Festival of Music (end of august)
