|Minimum Stay||2 - 3 nights|
This beautiful one bedroom, one bath English basement apartment is perfectly situated on one of the nicest blocks in Washington DC’s fabulous Capitol Hill neighborhood. This luxurious, owner-renovated and recently owner-occupied apartment is perfect for both vacation rentals and temporary executive housing. The location is literally steps from the Capitol South metro station, one block from the House of Representatives office buildings and two blocks from the U.S. Capitol.
It is perfect for a single or couple, a family with one or two children or an executive, lobbyist or politician who requires immediate access to the Capitol, the House Office buildings, the Capitol Hill Club, the National Republican Club of Capitol Hill or the Democratic National Committee headquarters. Four current congressmen live on this very same block.
The recently renovated apartment combines luxurious, high-end finishes with the very best of Capitol Hill and Washington DC located just outside the door. It is walking distance to the U.S. Capitol, Library of Congress, Supreme Court, the National Mall's monuments, museums and memorials, Metro (orange and blue lines), dozens of restaurants, bars and shops along Pennsylvania Avenue, Union Station, the historic Eastern Market, the Barracks Row district of even more restaurants, bars and shops, the Washington Nationals baseball stadium, many beautiful parks and green spaces and Interstate 395.
The very large living and dining room area (approx. 22 x 15) includes a separate dining area with a large round table and four chairs which can also double as the perfect spot for your computer or home office. The living room includes a brand-new pullout queen sofa bed (not a folding bed so there is no uncomfortable metal bar or springs), two leather club chairs, leather ottoman and a large coffee table. The 37 inch LG LCD HDTV includes Comcast Xfinity cable, a Blu-Ray DVD player and a direct connection for your Apple devices; high-speed wireless internet access is included at no extra charge.
The kitchen is perfect for both snacking and serious cooking. A bar-height counter separates this space from the living room. Both sides of the kitchen feature custom wood cabinetry and gorgeous green granite countertops. The stainless steel appliances include a two burner Kitchen Aid electric cooktop, GE Profile Advantium microwave / convection oven combination, Bosch dishwasher and undercounter Sub Zero refrigerator and freezer with ice maker. The kitchen is fully stocked with cookware, glassware, dishes and utensils (eight settings) and other necessities including a toaster and coffee maker (a complete coffee and tea service is included).
A large bedroom (approx. 12 x 14) includes a queen size sleigh bed with Sealy posturepedic mattress, Domain and Calvin Klein linens, sheets, pillows and blankets. A generous clothes closet includes custom built-in shelves and plenty of hanging and storage space.
The bathroom features beautiful chrome Waterworks fixtures and a large slate tile shower with frameless glass door, large sink with granite top and custom slate floor tile as well as plenty of storage for toiletries and other necessities. A separate laundry area with a full-size Asko front-loading washer and dryer, granite counter top workspace, iron and ironing board is located in the bathroom.
I purchased this property to be my primary residence in Washington DC. I lovingly and professionally restored this property to bring out the charm of this gorgeous historic rowhouse while including modern 21st century luxury features. I lived in this exact same apartment for several years until moving out of town recently.
Bill Powers purchased this apartment in 2002
The location is unbeatable and the block is gorgeous! I wanted something that was quintessentially Capitol Hill, in the heart of this historic neighborhood and on a tree-lined block with other beautiful homes.
Quite simply, the access from this house is too good to be true! I can easily walk to dozens of restaurants, bars and shops as well as many of the nation's finest monuments, museums and memorials. The Capital South Metro station is half a block away and can have me in most other parts of DC within 15-20 minutes or at the airport (DCA) in 30 minutes. When I need to drive, the house is just three blocks from the freeway (I-395).
This basement apartment has a perfect location for traveling all around DC! Access to the metro can't be beat! Bill was very gracious and even greeted us personally upon arrival. We use VRBO for all of our travel accommodations and this was the first time we have met an owner! Bill was friendly and offered helpful advice about nearby restaurants and the location of a grocery store for breakfast foods.
The apartment is well appointed and is represented accurately in the photographs. We felt very safe coming and going in the neighborhood and on the subway.
(FYI: We enjoyed Ted's Bulletin for dinner and had a delicious lunch at We The Pizza. Both restaurants are near the apartment.)
We would certainly stay at this location again!
This is a nice apartment with a great location. Close to the Metro, close to the Capitol. We really enjoyed staying there and would do it again.
My husband, two boys (10 and 8) and I stayed in this apartment last week. It was our first trip to DC and our first time using a rental like this instead of a hotel. I couldn't have been more pleased. Being so close to Capitol Hill, we loved our evening walks. The neighborhood was charming, safe and made us feel like we were at home. I wouldn't hesitate to come back or refer it to a friend.
We were in perfect walking distance to most everything but did venture to the Metrorail (barely a block away) a couple times- the zoo was entirely too far to walk to but shouldn't be missed! Only used our car once.
Not a huge space but certainly larger and more comfy that any hotel. Kitchen was equipped perfectly for a few home cooked meals though we did enjoy quite a few meals out- Tortilla Coast (around the corner) was yummy as was Ted's Bulletin (on 8th).
[Just a note: it is a basement apartment, so you should expect to hear the traffic from upstairs, which wasn't bad- but definitely audible.]
Two adults, 2 teenagers and we were comfortable in the apt. We were not planning on being there much other than to sleep, but we did end up hanging out (mainly to rest our feet and legs from all the walking!). Very convenient. Metro a block away. Bill was a great host, giving us recommendations on where to eat/shop. There is really no good grocery store nearby, but we picked up enough essentials at the local corner stores. AC worked great and provided some background noise (upstairs is a rental also and you can hear people walk around....not a big deal for us). We'd rent this place if we went back.
The location is fantastic, unfortunately that is the only positive thing that I can say about this apartment. The day that we arrived we had to call the owner to inform him that the place needed to be exterminated because there were several roaches in the apartment. He said that he would call one and that he would come by the next day and spray. I am assuming that he did because I saw a dead roach on the floor the next day. There were also a lot of crickets in the apartment. The front door entry was dirty and there were a lot of spiders. The carpet was gross and some of the tiles were coming up in the bathroom. The place needs a lot of attention and cleaning. The people who were staying upstairs made so much noise at all hours of the day and night. It was difficult to watch tv and go to sleep. We could hear every step that they took. There is also a lot of noise from the street in the mornings.
I have no desire to look for any other apartment for a DC stay ever again!
The owner: friendly, helpful and responsive to questions. We were given simple instructions for access and everything was flawless. Upon checkout time, he wouldn't hear of us loading towels or sheets, or even taking out the trash! By far the easiest checkin/out I've ever had.
The space: absolutely gorgeous! Comfortable furniture, including bed, with a little fan in the bedroom in case you need white noise or a little breeze. Large TV with premium channels, great leather chairs with ottoman and spacious four-top dining table for eating or working. Easy wifi access with a strong signal, too!
The kitchen: perfect! Undercounter fridge/freezer really provides great counter space. Little two-burner cooktop with LOADS of pots and pans allows for cooking. Coffee/tea/Splenda provided, which saved us a trip to the store.
The bath/laundry: love the shower! Great water pressure, and includes shampoo, conditioner and body wash in a mounted dispenser. This is great if you're not super picky and you're traveling without checked bags, saving space in your quart liquid bag. Great hair dryer, too, if you like variable speed/heat control. Super cool little washer/dryer set meant we came back home with clean clothes! (Hint: detergent goes in the right-most section marked with a | symbol.)
The location: PERFECT. So incredibly close to the Capitol South metro as well as two GREAT restaurants: Bullfeathers and Tortilla Coast. You're missing out if you don't try them both! There is even a convenient beer/wine/liquor store in between those restaurants, and for such a small place, they have an excellent selection. We took a very easy walk to and from the eastern end of the Mall area (Capitol, NMAI, Air/Space, Art Gallery), and used the metro--without having to transfer lines--to get to the western Mall (Castle, Holocaust, American History, Natural History).
All in all, we stayed up far too late each evening enjoying the apartment (and the wine!). I will definitely be back in DC many times, and I'll not need to do any more hunting on VRBO for the perfect place. THANK YOU, BILL! I hope to be back sooner rather than later. :)
You will not find a better Capitol Hill location! The very best of Capitol Hill and Washington DC are located just outside the door! This apartment is literally steps from the Capitol South metro station, one block from the House of Representatives office buildings and two blocks from the U.S. Capitol!
It is walking distance to the U.S. Capitol, Library of Congress, Supreme Court, the National Mall and its monuments, museums and memorials, Metro (orange and blue lines), dozens of restaurants, bars and shops along Pennsylvania Avenue, Union Station, the historic Eastern Market, the Barracks Row district of even more restaurants, bars and shops, the Washington Nationals baseball stadium, many beautiful parks and green spaces and it also has easy access to and from Interstate 395.
