|Minimum Stay||2 - 3 nights|
This beautiful one bedroom, one bath English basement apartment is perfectly situated on one of the nicest blocks in Washington DC’s fabulous Capitol Hill neighborhood. This luxurious, owner-renovated and recently owner-occupied apartment is perfect for both vacation rentals and temporary executive housing. The location is literally steps from the Capitol South metro station, one block from the House of Representatives office buildings and two blocks from the U.S. Capitol.
It is perfect for a single or couple, a family with one or two children or an executive, lobbyist or politician who requires immediate access to the Capitol, the House Office buildings, the Capitol Hill Club, the National Republican Club of Capitol Hill or the Democratic National Committee headquarters. Four current congressmen live on this very same block.
The renovated apartment combines luxurious, high-end finishes with the very best of Capitol Hill and Washington DC located just outside the door. It is walking distance to the U.S. Capitol, Library of Congress, Supreme Court, the National Mall's monuments, museums and memorials, Metro (orange and blue lines), dozens of restaurants, bars and shops along Pennsylvania Avenue, Union Station, the historic Eastern Market, the Barracks Row district of even more restaurants, bars and shops, the Washington Nationals baseball stadium, many beautiful parks and green spaces and Interstates 395/695.
The very large living and dining room area (approx. 22 x 15) includes a separate dining area with a large round table and four chairs which can also double as the perfect spot for your computer or home office. The living room includes a brand-new pullout queen sofa bed (not a folding bed so there is no uncomfortable metal bar or springs), two leather club chairs, leather ottoman and a large coffee table. The 37 inch LG LCD HDTV includes Comcast Xfinity cable, a Blu-Ray DVD player and a direct connection for your Apple devices; high-speed wireless internet access is included at no extra charge.
The kitchen is perfect for both snacking and serious cooking. A bar-height counter separates this space from the living room. Both sides of the kitchen feature custom wood cabinetry and gorgeous green granite countertops. The stainless steel appliances include a two burner Kitchen Aid electric cooktop, GE Profile Advantium microwave / convection oven combination, Bosch dishwasher and undercounter Sub Zero refrigerator and freezer with ice maker. The kitchen is fully stocked with cookware, glassware, dishes and utensils (eight settings) and other necessities including a toaster and coffee maker (a complete coffee and tea service is included).
A large bedroom (approx. 12 x 14) includes a queen size bed with a new Serta perfect sleeper mattress and plenty of high-end linens, sheets, pillows and blankets. A generous closet provides custom built-in shelves and plenty of hanging and storage space.
The bathroom features beautiful chrome Waterworks fixtures and a large slate tile shower with frameless glass door, large sink with granite top and custom slate floor tile as well as plenty of storage for toiletries and other necessities. A separate laundry area with a full-size Asko front-loading washer and dryer, granite counter top workspace, iron and ironing board is located in the bathroom.
Finally, I can provide you with a residential parking permit at no charge. This allows you to park in any available street parking spot as if you actually lived in the neighborhood. Street parking is almost always available on our same block and is usually available within just a couple houses in either direction of ours. The vast majority of residents of the Capitol Hill neighborhood do not have private or off-street parking as most of these houses were built before cars! This is essentially the only trade-off in exchange for staying in a historic neighborhood where you can walk to so many things. A suburban location might have street parking but they probably won't have a Metro station 1/2 a block away and the Capitol building 2 blocks away!
I purchased this property to be my primary residence in Washington DC. I lovingly and professionally restored this property to bring out the charm of this gorgeous historic rowhouse while including modern 21st century luxury features. I lived in this exact same apartment for several years until moving out of town recently.
Bill Powers purchased this apartment in 2002
The location is unbeatable and the block is gorgeous! I wanted something that was quintessentially Capitol Hill, in the heart of this historic neighborhood and on a tree-lined block with other beautiful homes.
Quite simply, the access from this house is too good to be true! I can easily walk to dozens of restaurants, bars and shops as well as many of the nation's finest monuments, museums and memorials. The Capital South Metro station is half a block away and can have me in most other parts of DC within 15-20 minutes or at the airport (DCA) in 30 minutes. When I need to drive, the house is just three blocks from the freeway (I-395).
We stayed for a week! Others have said it and we will repeat it here: The location of this rental is fantastic! We couldn't have been happier. Quick walks to the capitol building for a sunset view of the Washington Mall, for example, was a perfect pre-bedtime activity. It was comfortable, too--and that includes the bed which matters most of all. One tiny problem: the renters (when there are any) in the apartment above can sometimes seem utterly unaware of the presence of renters below them. The landlord asks the upstairs guests to walk softly and slip off shoes while indoors, but sometimes that doesn't happen. Once the first upstairs family left, our sleep was blissfully uninterrupted. The second family behaved perfectly! We wish we had checked for the location of a local market before we traveled, but we did find the local restaurants convenient, including the Subway where we met a Congressman who kindly offered to have his staff provide us with a private tour of the Capitol Building. (Yes please!!) We picked up breakfast one morning at the deli next to Bullfeathers: It was yummy! We feel so fortunate to have found this VRBO and will recommend it to all our friends and family traveling to D.C.
We were very pleased with our week-long stay in this DC apartment. Upon arrival, things were as we expected. Very clean and updated renovations throughout the apartment. We were especially grateful for the wonderful in-person service of the owner; we had never experienced this before with a VRBO rental. The owner met us, and was at the ready for any need we might have had. We even enjoyed the use of the adjoining driveway to the unit, something we were not at all expecting but for which we were eternally grateful. Our 10 year old son even commented how comfortable the sofa bed was; it is a rollout foldable, so no bars in your back while sleeping! If we returned to the area, we would certainly consider staying here again. The location can't be beat... So many wonderful DC things within walking distance and a Metro stop very close for those things that aren't.
For those who might be particular or fussy, the layout of the apartment might strike some as unconventional. Probably due to plumbing in a very old building, the bathroom is directly off the kitchen and at the opposite end of the unit as the bedroom. This did not bother us in the least, we got a good laugh out of it more than not. I mention it strictly as an FYI.
We stayed for a week. Location is awesome. Walk to Capitol is only about 3 - 5 minutes. All the Smithsonian museums, National Archives, Library of Congress, Supreme Court, Nuseum, Union Station, and all the monuments on the National Mall are within walking distance. Arlington National Cemetery and Pentagon easily accessible by Metro. Metro station is about a 2 minute walk when you want to venture a little further. Because the blue, silver, and orange lines all share track in this area you can expect a train every 2 - 3 minutes that can take you anywhere you want to go with the exception of Arlington, Pentagon, or the Reagan National. Bed is comfortable, living room furniture is comfortable, HD TV with every channel you can imagine for evenings, WiFi is fast both upload and download. Kitchen has everything you need if you want to eat in. Washer and dryer making packing light very doable. It's a little more worn than the pictures show but nothing to be concerned about. 3 restaurants just around the corner - TexMex, Thai, and American (Bullfeathers, a lobbyist hangout). We ate at the Thai (great) and Bullfeathers (not that great). Another cluster of dining is several blocks away, one stop on the Metro, in the East Market neighborhood. There's a market about 4 blocks way that has most of what you need. As others have mentioned, it can be loud with people upstairs but this was never really an issue. Here's the bottom line. You would pay more for a mid-level hotel that would be farther away from everything, smaller, and not nearly as comfortable. Why would you do that? We will be checking availability of this place when we come back.
Great location & loved the washer and dryer. Only complaint is you hear everything word said & footstep in the upstairs unit. I think there were several children staying there and they were early risers. Owner was very easy to work with.
My family (2 adults and 1 child) stayed here for 5 nights. The apartment was perfect and in a wonderful location. Bill greeted us when we arrived and was very nice. The unit was equipped with a fridge/freezer, stove top, dishwasher and washer & dryer which was great to have. There was a small market store about a 5 minute walk away and really delicious places to eat in the same area. We used Uber for everything but there is a metro line close by. It was a very quiet neghborhood and we felt safe coming and going all times of the day. We would definitely reccomend this place.
Loved this basement apartment. My visit to DC was work related, so the House side of Capitol Hill was a perfect jumping off point. The metro stop is super close and Uber drivers were never more than 5 minutes away (usually only 3). There are two restaurants about a block away, one tex-mex, one Thai, and a liquor store with decent wine selection. I appreciated having the laundry, cable, wifi, and a furnished kitchen the most. Comfy bed and decent couch for lounging in the living room. The non-carpeted floors get really cold, even with the heat on, so I highly recommend bringing slippers or extra socks. The shower door opens in, which makes getting in/out awkward and there's a loud pop when you close the door, so don't be too startled. Overall, great place to stay!
You will not find a better Capitol Hill location! The very best of Capitol Hill and Washington DC are located just outside the door! This apartment is literally steps from the Capitol South metro station, one block from the House of Representatives office buildings and two blocks from the U.S. Capitol!
It is walking distance to the U.S. Capitol, Library of Congress, Supreme Court, the National Mall and its monuments, museums and memorials, Metro (orange and blue lines), dozens of restaurants, bars and shops along Pennsylvania Avenue, Union Station, the historic Eastern Market, the Barracks Row district of even more restaurants, bars and shops, the Washington Nationals baseball stadium, many beautiful parks and green spaces and it also has easy access to and from Interstate 395.
