It is an exciting time to be in Pahoa and lower Puna. The lava is something we have grown accustomed to, but let me assure you, our home is nowhere near the current, or projected flow. We are over 10 miles away.
Accommodations: This is an apartment on the ground floor, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath and an extra outdoor shower (Sleeps 4) and is a wonderful location for your vacation in our Kapoho Paradise.
From our well-appointed tropical apartment, you can head out for snorkeling, kayaking, surfing and swimming only a block away! This spacious and comfortable apartment has been built with quality materials, and is stocked with just about anything you would want. You'll love it.

*The yard is HUGE, giving you plenty of room to spread out. Enjoy the beautiful gardens or set up some croquet or bocci. Enjoy the paradise.
*Living Area: The main entrance to the apartment is from the spacious lanai. In this area you can enjoy the television, the office area and plenty of kitchen space. There is a dining room table in the hallway and a beautiful teak sculpture of dolphins. The comfortable tropical furniture makes this a great place to hang out to watch some movies. Did we say movies? We have over 700 movie titles to choose from, all housed in a separate Wi-Fi storage disk. Complete instructions are provided for the TV, movies and sound system.
*The ‘Orchid’ Bedroom: This bedroom boasts a beautiful view of our orchid wall. The Queen sized bed (with new mattresses this spring) is very comfortable and the room has a dresser, nightstands, reading lamps, ceiling fan, a desk and comfortable chairs. Tropical gone comfortable.

* Garage: This is where all the toys (electric golf cart, 2 bicycles, 4 boogie boards, 1 two person kayak, and 1 surf board) live. There is plenty of snorkel gear, but we can't guarantee we'll have your size. You are welcome use electric for to drive around the beautiful, peaceful neighborhood.
Other information about what we provide:
* Shampoo, Hair Conditioner, Hand/Body soap, Dish soap, Laundry soap, Toilet Paper (If this seems silly to mention, we agree. We stayed at a distant vacation rental where they gave us 'starter' toilet paper. It was a very short roll of TP. We don't want you to have to experience that.) Plenty of kitchen towels, sharp knives, dishware, glassware and silverware.
* Hair Dryers
* Umbrellas--just in case
More details about our home:
* The apartment was built with top-quality materials and meticulous attention to every detail. The lanai is beautiful slate. On the inside, the floors are tile with knotty pine trim everywhere. There is plenty of room to spread out.

We are originally from the Seattle area and moved to Kapoho in 2008 because we fell in love with the area. We love to travel, but also love being at home in Kapoho. When we purchased our home, we knew it would need some modifications and have completely rebuilt it.
With the modifications complete, we feel our home and vacation rental apartment are among the most beautiful in Kapoho.
When we aren't in our paradise home, we are probably out traveling the world. In the summer of 2014 we drove our little camper van, Hale Iki (meaning little home) across the western US. Our 2015 travel included the Panama Canal, taking Hale Iki to Vancouver Island and walking in France and Spain on El Camino de Santiago Compostella (and we completed the 500 pilgrimage!).
Holly purchased this apartment in 2008
We moved, from the Seattle area, to Kapoho in 2008 because of the beauty and serenity. After years of working in 'Corporate America', we both decided that this is the best place to retire. We have a huge garden, love snorkeling at the Waiopea Tide Pools, and all of the other beautiful swimming locations in our area.
We are both active in the Kapoho and the greater Hilo area and love to participate in the wonderful offerings this side of the island offers.
Thermally heated tidal ponds are common in this area and some are warmer than others. This is the only area of Hawaii with these, so it is truly unique. The Marine Sanctuary is a 5 minute bike ride (or a 15 minute walk). Incredibly colored/shaped corals and small schools of good-sized fish. Big schools of smaller fish. We have traveled quite a bit, and this is a gem and is easily accessed--what a treat. Or you can bike up and down the coast, with minimal car interference, even though we don't have official bike lanes. Take a walk along the coast, towards Cape Kumukahi, the Eastern most point of the island, and the state.
We stayed here for 4 days last week and it was the absolutely divine! From the house itself, to the owners, to the area, everything was great. I don't think there is a better place on earth to sleep - the ocean waves are just the right volume and so are the frogs. Best of all, cars are not usually heard or seen, and the bikes were great to have. The house is very well built and super clean, and the solar electric and solar hot water always feels better than grid power.
The owners are very friendly and right upstairs but you'd hardly know it unless you need something. I own vacation rentals myself and they one-upped me in quality of directions and the welcome book is filled with interesting and useful information.
We spent much of our time on the beautifully tiled lanai and in the hot tub with our 6 year old. The kitchen is well-equipped and we're foodies so we used it well, cooking great meals from food easily found at farmers markets and roadside stands all around the island.
We ventured easily to Volcano National Park, Kalapana, and Hilo on day trips. The neighborhood is very quiet and safe feeling, and the warm ponds were a great place to teach our daughter how to snorkel.
The review in four words; Too short a stay! Every positive thing said here about Susan and John's beautiful rental, is also echoed by Lisah and I. Where to begin? Kapoho and the Champagne ponds aren't a "Touristy" destination. It's private and serene. Susan and John are such wonderful hosts that you instantly think of them as friends, and wished they lived closer. The attention to detail in this beautiful home is as close to perfect as possible. From the lava rock walls bordering the entry stairway that was topped by a tinted mortar that was sculpted to resemble lava flow, and the compass rose embedded in the tile floor, to the labels on the drawers and cabinets that took the guess work out of finding things in an unfamiliar setting. This level of caring is carried through in the amenities, both small and large that are provided to the guests. Again, much of this has been covered by other reviewers here, yet we were constantly being pleasantly surprised to find "The little things" that Susan and John had thought to provide. I had forgotten to pick up garlic salt for a dinner we were making. Covered! Crushed red pepper? Check! What was that beautiful neon blue and yellow fish we saw while snorkeling in the champagne ponds? Oh, here's a tropical fish guide on the book shelf. Wait, here's a local bird guide as well. Want to play a board game? Take your pick from...alot of them! How do we get to the Champagne pond tide pools to see the turtles? Look, there is a binder with all these instructions and directions! The Champagne ponds are 1 1/2 blocks away, and oh look, turtle cove is also a block and a half away in the other direction. Ohhhh, and the tide pools are over there. That's why they have a golf cart! Seriously, you can tell that John and Susan are seasoned travelers and have taken their experiences and knowledge, applied them to their magnificent home in the middle of paradise, and created something spectacularly magical in the process. We cannot wait to come back. 3 days was way too short. Mahalo!
If I could, I'd give Kapoho Breeze six stars! This quality, spacious apartment was wonderfully quiet, clean and comfortable, with everything my friend and I could have asked for. We especially appreciated the barbecue, hot tub, outdoor shower, laundry facilities, movies, bikes, snorkels, Champagne Pond, flowers and use of the Vitamix! Susan and John were outstanding hosts, attending to our every question and need, while also respecting our privacy. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and I will be back!
Our trip was made so special by Susan and John. The apartment was the best we have stayed in and we have rented 8 times through VRBO. They have and Thought of everything you would need. Loved and laughed about the outside shower. They were always happy to answer any questions we might have. we spent a lot of time in the warm water . It was a bitter sweet trip for us as we brought my husband elderly brother (86) and wife with us. Spent a lot of time just sitting on lani and being together. It was a extra week we didn't think we would get. Susan and John went out of their way to see all was good. We will be back !
Our stay at the Kapoho Breeze was perfect, I really wish we could have stayed longer. The home is comfortable, well stocked, has high quality finishes and is a great place to call home base while visiting the east side of the island.
Things we loved:
- I was initially worried about the fact that there was no AC (I had missed this when I booked) but there are a zillion ceiling fans and with the windows open it kept the house at a perfect temperature. Since they are in a gated neighborhood you could have every window open and hear nothing but lovely nighttime noises. It was so peaceful.
- So many fun things to do right on property! They have an expansive digital movie library, fun games to play, a Ukulele to learn, books to read, yards to run in, artwork to admire and of course the hot tub. My family had a wonderful day just spending time at the house.
- Little touches like the “outdoor play” towels (they know not everything is going to stay squeaky clean and they plan for this) and the shampoo/conditioner/body soap dispensers in both the outdoor and indoor showers.
- Labels everywhere! Everything in the house is clearly labeled it’s awesome! We’ve been to several vacation rentals where you spend a lot of time trying to figure out where things are, what things are or how the owner wants you to handle things. The owners here are very clear with instructions, help hints and tips.
The only thing I didn’t love was that we couldn’t use the golf cart to park at Champagne Ponds. Seemed kind of silly to have the golf cart but not be able to leave it at the main attraction! This was something I was really looking forward to and was my only disappointment. Otherwise, I couldn’t recommend Kapoho Breeze more. So glad we found this gem and hope we can go back sometime.
My husband and I got married in Hawaii and love to come back for our anniversary. We have stayed in many different VRBOs and this was one of the best. The home is beautiful, location great and attention to detail much appreciated. The water is so close by with great tidal pools and opportunity for load of water fun, especially with all of the toys provided. We loved the decor of the apartment and the orchids and other flowers were just gorgeous! Mahalo!!!
Don't forget - Hawaii Island has an active volcano. Drive about 20 miles, through the jungle on a coastal highway to view the lava entering the ocean. We're also just over an hour drive from Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park, the historical Kilauea caldera and home of Pele, the fire goddess. You can check out Hot/Warm Ponds, Champagne Pond, and Wai O Pae Marine Sanctuary all within walking, or short biking distance. Because of all the warm springs in the area the ocean water is a little bit warmer here, around 5 degrees F -- not a lot, but for us every degree helps.
