This 2-story cottage is just steps from the secluded black sand beach of Zancudo. Beautiful palms and other flora enhance the view of the water from the upper porch where you can sit at the breakfast bar, in the leather rockers, or in the hammock with your morning coffee or evening cocktail. Upstairs are 2 bedrooms each with their own full bath, plus the kitchen and eating area. The downstairs apartment contains 2 full beds, a full bath, kitchenette, and dining table. There is a patio downstairs and an outdoor shower. Washer/dryer, hammocks, boogie boards, and 4 bicycles are provided. Ocean breezes and ceiling fans in every room keep you comfortable year-round.
Brent and Angie first visited Zancudo in 2003 as guests of a friend from their hometown who owned property there. They fell in love with the natural beauty of the place and particularly liked the fact that it is off the beaten path. No WalMarts in Zancudo! A few years later, they purchased their lot which is in a great location between Sol Y Mar and Coloso del Mar - two bar/restaurants popular with the expats. The location has a good beach break - perfect for boogie boarding and surfing. After a few more years, they were certain that Zancudo was a place where they wanted to build a home. They named it Shelter from the Storm, referring to the way that being there feels like such a retreat from all the stresses of business and life at home in the US. Currently still working, the couple is limited in the amount of time they can spend at their beloved cottage, but in just a few more years, they plan for that to change. In the meantime, you are lucky to have the opportunity to enjoy Shelter from the Storm for your own vacation. Who knows - you might decide it is the place for your retirement, too!

Angie Stanford purchased this cottage in 2010
We stayed in a lot of rentals in Zancudo before we built our home. We tried to put the best features of each in our cottage. Secure windows with screens and ceiling fans in every room make the house very comfortable all day long, all times of the year. We found that we spent very little time indoors at our rentals, even going outside to read and eat. Therefore, our home is designed for living outside with the interior devoted mostly to beds and baths. There is comfortable sleeping for 8.
Susan England at Los Cocos manages this property and will make you feel welcome and at home. Everything you need is provided including a fully outfitted kitchen, linens/towels, 4 bicycles, boogie boards, washer/dryer, etc.
This listing was true and accurate regarding both the accommodations and the property's location. This house is a clean, comfortable and welcoming place that we totally enjoyed. The beautiful furnishings, including the art work lend a tasteful air of tropical tranquility. The second floor porch area was a popular hangout for morning coffee, siesta time or evening cocktails. And watch out for the toucan that stops by on his regular route to be photographed and admired. Wide-open beaches for long walks and water activities were wonderful. Sunsets were spectacular! We used the boogie boards and bikes and often walked to the popular sodas for great meals. We tasted bagels and cinnamon rolls from the bakery and enjoyed fresh fruit from local merchants. What treats! Walking is convenient but’ taxi rides are easy to arrange. We appreciated our "girlfriend getaway" because we were open to adventure and experiencing the beautiful, open, natural beauty of the Zancudo coastline. We would recommend this property to anyone who is looking for a quiet and restful vacation time to appreciate the natural wonders of Playa Zancudo and meet the charming people who also see how special this place really is!
I have stayed at this cottage twice and have thoroughly enjoyed it on both occassions. The views are spectacular from the porch, and the tradition of sunset coctails sitting on the driftwood is not to be missed! This property had easy access to the beach (back yard), and to our favorite restaurant (Sol y Mar) as well as only biking distance to grocery and convenience stores. It is very quiet there, and we felt very safe.
The neighbors were also very friendly - we happened to be there when the owners were in town from the unit next door and we made a great friendship there as well. The expats and the Ticos are all very friendly and accommodating.
I was very impressed with the locally made furniture (beds, rockers, cabinetry, etc...) The beautiful woods really add a lot to the feel of the place.
I highly recommend this house for your visit to Zancudo. Pura Vida!
This property is lovely; it is private and quiet with beautiful views and plantings. The write up and photos are accurate. The house is comfortable, clean and well maintained. With large windows and tight screens, you live in the delight of the outdoors with the comfort of indoors for sleeping and activities when it's dark.
Zancudo is off the beaten path; however, there are opportunities for visitors to explore the many aspects of Costa Rica's beauty. Day trips include botanical gardens, animal sanctuary, zip lines, offshore fishing, and Corcovado National Park. Visitors will also enjoy swimming, biking, wave riding, surfing, massages, excellent dining, and local bars.
