The Guest Suite in this elegant, split plan apartment in the Historic District of San Miguel de Allende (steps from the Angela Peralta Theatre, see Map) - is a small, fully furnished bedroom, with it's own full bathroom. It has twin or king bed flexibility (see Video). It has a desk with chair, an upholstered Queen Ann chair, 2 footstools, 3 lamps, and French doors opening on a flowered balcony over a small garden. Cool in summer, cooler in winter. A heater, a fan, and a white noise machine are provided. It has a well-appointed, full bath and storage space. You will have a Vonage phone, wireless HS Internet, a flat screen TV with basic cable, and use of the washer. All linens (sheets are ironed), towels, paper products, are included. There is purified water throughout the apartment. You enter the complex (please see the Video!) through a courtyard with flowers, trees and a lovely fountain. A doormen provides further security. There is a huge roof terrace with trees, an herb garden, and views almost to Madrid; guests enjoy it for morning coffee, to watch the hot air balloons, entertain friends, and sun bathing. The ambiance of the apartment is north African or Morrocan, so shade is valued and blackout curtains are available at many of the windows for the afternoon sun. I have original paintings and Persian carpets, and the light here is very strong. This is a home, not a hostel, B&B, or pension. Sex, age, and sexual orientation are irrelevant. The primary owner is a large, affectionate Siamese cat. Secondary owner lives in the Master Suite, rarely using the living room and not into cooking. The kitchen is available for occasional snacks. Living room privileges are negotiable. Due to it's location, around the corner from the Jardin, the Guest Suite is ideal for people wanting to get out and get to know San Miguel, the Historic District, and all they have to offer; it isn't suited to people who want to spend a lot of time in the apartment. No subletting, no pets, no smoking except on the roof terrace; overnight guests limited, with prior permission, and at the rate stipulated. NOTE: VRBO requires a 'nightly' rate, but I do not rent by the night. You can stay the days you want to, but your rate will be for a week (or a month). Please, please check the Calendar for availability, and the NOTES (scroll down to the bottom under RATES) for a clearer picture of the Rates.
I grew up in Michigan on the lake and graduated from the U of Michigan, flew for PanAm, taught school in Latin American, married, and lived for 17 years in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad in the West Indies. My son is a commercial airline captain and lives in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. I have a granddaughter who lives in Barbados. My sister, who is blind, lives here in San Miguel. I have wonderful help - almost family - here: Magdalena, who takes care of my food and the apartment, is one of the most likeable people you will ever meet. I love San Miguel and the Mexican people and feel fortunate every day I'm allowed by the Mexican government to live here.
Anna Griffith purchased this apartment in 2003
The location of the apartment, in my opinion, and for me, is unequaled. (Due to this location, the guest suite will appeal MOST to people who know San Miguel and want 'puro centro'.) I've lived in Paris and in London and this is the closest thing to that type of urban living, without the staggering cost. I'm an urban person and like to walk to most everything - safely and without sweating. I have churchbells, parades, fireworks, people who make eye contact and exchange daily greetings with me; I know my neighborhood and many of my neighbors. My yoga class, offered 3 times a week, is around the corner at the Arthur Murray Dance Studio. There are 3 alternative medicine sources within a block, Starbuck's is around another corner, and if the wind is blowing just right I can hear the mariachi's playing in the Jardin on weekends. San Miguel was recently voted 'Best City in the World 2013' by Conde Nast Traveler; we may not have the Louvre or the Crown Jewels or a Formula One race track, but we've got a combination of lifestyle and climate that is exceptional. Most of the expatriate, permanent residents here literally had the world to choose from and, often, after trying many other famous places, chose San Miguel.
There are only so many rooms (B&Bs, hotels, etc.) in this prime location. Most of them start at $100 to $250USD a night - many times the price of the Guest Suite, and there's no living room, and no one to ask questions. People who value comfort, elegance, security, and location, over a slight loss of privacy, really like the Guest Suite.
Thoroughly enjoyed a month's stay in the guest suite with a most gracious hostess and her furry feline. Both Anna and Spock were like family to me and the accommodations were wonderful. This was my seventh visit to SMA and one of the most relaxing and comfortable vacations experienced. Our mutual respect allowed for privacy when desired but also great company and conversation other times. The convenient location, hospitality and comforts of home were unbeatable and I hope to stay again in the future. I miss you Anna and Spock! Muchas Gracias.
Our three weeks in San Miguel was delightful. With Anna's assistance we were able to explore the town walking from her great location right in the heart of San Miguel. She not only gave us advice as what to see and do, but great insight into the Mexican culture. No one could ask for a better hostess and would recommend her lovely condo without hesitation or reservation.
This was our first choice of a place to stay in SMA, and we were super happy to find it available for our planned vacation. The pictures and the video represent exactly what we found once we arrived: a lovely, comfortable guest suite and a conscientious, engaging hostess. Anna was invaluable in helping to point us to quality restaurants (and grocery stores!) and other diversions within walking distance of the apartment. Spock the Cat™ was a delightful housemate as well. We began and ended every day on the rooftop terrace, enjoying birdsong, church bells, jacaranda trees in bloom, and gorgeous shifting light. We had a magical time in San Miguel, and we are so grateful to Anna for opening her home to travelers like us in such generous and thoughtful manner. We hope to return in the future!
In November 2013 my friend Louise and I had the pleasure of staying with Anna Griffin in her lovely apartment right in the heart of San Miguel. It doesn't get any better! Anna was an extremely gracious host and very respectful of our privacy. At the same time we became fast friends and enjoyed time together socially.
Staying with a woman who lives and knows San Miguel is like having your own personal concierge. Anna generously answered all of our questions about where to go and how to get there.
A highlight for me was the opportunity to play bridge almost daily. I discovered 3 venues where I could play. I love the game and whenever I arrived to play, there was always a partner available for me.
This was my fifth trip to San Miguel but I have never stayed in such a perfect location. We were a block and a half from the central square (Jardin) dominated by an amazing Cathedral and steps from shops, restaurants and two mini movie theatres.
I went walking every day to explore the city. Those were magical experiences and at no time did I feel unsafe as a single woman wandering around. It came as no surprise to me that San Miguel was voted the number one tourist destination in the world by Condo Nast in 2013.
Thank you Anna for your warmth and generosity.
I highly recommend this rental for either couples or singles.
My friend and I couldn't believe our good fortune when we found Anna's guest suite in San Miguel. From the photos and description on VRBO, it looked lovely and the price was right - almost too good to be true. So we booked the month of November.
When we finally arrived at Anna's home, I was pleased to find that not only was it as nice as described but better. Anna's home is comfortable, safe, clean and well located. The decor is charming, with thoughtful touches, like a complimentary bottle of wine, fresh flowers and extra towels, to make our stay all the more pleasant. The kitchen is well equipped, with every facility one could need during their stay. The bed (twin) was very comfortable. Except for Anna's private quarters, we had access to the whole apartment. If we wanted complete privacy, we could retreat to our guest room.
We quickly became friends with our hostess and her feline roommate, Spock. Anna is an interesting person, well-traveled, well-informed on world issues and a wellspring of information on San Miguel. If asked, she will generously share her knowledge of San Miguel and offer suggestions on what to do and see during your visit. Spock is a sweet gentle cat who will happily warm your lap if you desire.
The apartment complex itself is well maintained and safely tucked away from the busy street behind locked doors. The location is central to most activities that would interest a tourist. Good restaurants and shops are nearby. I walked to most everything though taxis are cheap and plentiful.
I should also mention Anna's cook, Magdalena, and her driver, Dante. Both are delightful, efficient and trustworthy.
This is a lovely property in a great location, with all the necessary amenities. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it and hope to return one day.
We loved staying with Anna at her casa. Our suite was well appointed, peaceful and private. Anna added to our enjoyment by making suggestions, filling us in on the history and culture of the community-generally being a warm and witty presence. The apartment is unique and so well located-just across the street from Petit Four, a divine French patisserie (do have a brownie for us).
Endless restaurants, films, lectures, concerts, classes in dance, art, language, cooking. Two open air markets and an artisan's market are easy walking distance. Organic Market on Saturdays. Horseback riding to pyramids or just day rides. Day trips to Mexico City, Queretaro, Guanajuato, Pozos, Atontonilco. Sunday House and Garden tours of elegant homes. Beautiful hot springs in the European style, with gardens and lunch.
