We have traveled all around the world but our favorite place to ski, hike, bike, kayak and rock climb is the Truckee/North Lake Tahoe area. We settled in the San Francisco Bay Area (Palo Alto) in 2008 after years of leaving overseas and bought a second home in Truckee in 2013.
We have two kids (8 and 11) who are growing up too quickly so we bought our house in order to build wonderful family memories that will entice then to continue visiting us after the college years and beyond.
We ski in the winter, of course, and in the summer there are too many activities to choose from: hiking, rafting, kayaking, horseback riding, biking, stand up paddleboarding, rock climbing, golfing, tennis are all just minutes away. We love taking our tandem bicycle out--especially riding from our house along the lake and up Route 40 to Donner Summit.
Our kids love going to the Tahoe Donner day camp up here during the summer. and then we have a few hours off for a kid-free adventure.
We fell in love first with the house--especially the VIEWS, the open, spacious floor plan and and the contemporary aesthetic.
Then we learned about everything Tahoe Donner has to offer--so much to do in summer AND winter, great common facilities including the ski resorts, private beach club on the lake, swimming pool, equestrian center, golf course and a relatively hidden gem: the extensive system of running/biking/X country skiing trails.
We really appreciate the access to I-80 and all the various downhill ski resorts.
Truckee is also a great town--with a mountain town vibe that is the real deal.
There are only a handful of houses in Tahoe Donner with our sweeping views of the lake and mountains. We chose a contemporary mountain style for the home that doesn't compete with nature. Our house is just high enough for the views, but not so high that access becomes difficult in the winter months.
We love that the house is big enough for 3-4 families, so that we are able to host family and friend reunions and share the house with others. We always come up with multiple families and the evenings are filled with lots of people cooking in the spacious kitchen, long meals and then various board games and other conversations going on afterwards.
Everyone eventually ends up in the hot tub on the deck--soaking in the views.
The house was newly renovated in spring 2013 and everything in the house is brand new.
