Ocean's Gem is exactly that - a pristine house with a pristine view of the ocean from huge windows that make you feel like you are outside every minute of your stay.
Ocean’s Gem at Palmetto Dunes Beach Resort is breathtaking. The views are what you dream of when you dream of the ideal destination vacation. The sparkling Atlantic is right outside your door & you have private beach access. The entire ocean-facing wall is widow after window – all of them Anderson Coastal windows, tinted so that you don’t get to much heat from the sun, & don’t have to close the blinds in the evening to protect the turtles on the beach. Sunrise is spectacular from most rooms in the house. Three of the five bedrooms (all bedrooms have private baths) have ocean-facing balconies or decks & the other two bedrooms have window seats with ocean views.
I just bought the house & am upgrading it. We’ve already upgraded the kitchen contents, put in all new pillows & new bedding, new pots/pans, glassware & art. I’ve replaced the aging pool heater with a new double sized ocean front enclosed heater to avoid as many mechanical issues as possible AND allow heating year round for a fee.. There will be a 5th bedroom available July 2013 with two queen beds. Depending on the time of year, you can rent this house as either a 4 or 5 bedroom (sleeping either 10 or 14, see Rates page for rates at each sleep number). We have two other homes sleeping between 12 & 23: VRBO 183207 & VRBO 367594. You can see all three side by side on my website at RentThisGem .com
THE BEACH IS IN YOUR BACKYARD – SUNRISE IS GLORIOUS
The backyard is an oasis. There is a grassy area just this side of the beach for playing bocce or badminton, & a very large travertine patio that faces the ocean. The pool (37 feet by 12 feet) is gorgeous, with an infinity edge & an integrated spa. Ocean’s Gem has an outdoor kitchen complete with a bar, a fridge & sink, a great grill & seating for six, with outside speakers (please be respectful of the neighbors or we will have to disconnect them).
There are poolside chaise & chairs for your comfort. The breach is so close that you can wander there in less than a minute, using your private beach access. The small dunes off the back of the lawn are a nesting place for the loggerhead turtles, so if you are lucky you may spot one of the mothers on her way in or out to lay her eggs. There is a shower & foot shower on your return from the beach to help avoid bringing s& into your living area.
PREFER TO WATCH THE SUNSET?
The other side of the house has an Italianate patio complete with grapevine-covered pergola, arches & columns & a beautiful terrazzo floor. This large patio is in the shade during the day & is an idyllic place to sit & read or just watch the sun go down.
The gourmet kitchen is loaded with every convenience. The double ovens make cooking for a large crowd a breeze. Prefer gas or electric? The stove has two of each (which seems a bit strange but there you go). There is a large Viking fridge as well as a wine fridge. There is an icemaker in the freezer as well as a freestanding under counter icemaker. We have just replaced all the cutlery & pots & pans (with Al Clad Emeril series cookware). I’ve added a turkey roaster, lemon & lime crushers & numerous other kitchen gadgets since I plan to live here 4 months every year. There is lots of cupboard space with an additional double pantry down the hall to the laundry room. There is also a kitchen bar that seats 4.
The newly remodeled master bedroom (sleeps 2) is almost decadent. With a private double couch covered deck facing the ocean, a gas fireplace facing the king sized bed & a bathroom designed for your every enjoyment. The ‘Roman’ bath has a Jacuzzi tub, a walk in shower with a wall of glass tiles, a separate commode & bidet, a walk in closet, double sinks, vanity seating area & lots of lights & mirrors. We will be installing a sleep number king bed in this room for our fall guests.
In addition to the downstairs master there are 3 or 4 bedrooms upstairs depending on which configuration you choose & what time of year it is. An upstairs bar with fridge graces the long balcony that connects the 4 upstairs bedrooms.
One of the ocean facing bedrooms (the Aqua Palm Bedroom) will be upgraded to a King in July 2013. The Aqua Palm room (sleeps two) has an ocean-facing balcony with double chaise & spectacular ocean view. The private bath has double sinks, a large walk in shower & bathtub combo & a separate commode. There is a chair with ottoman & reading lamp for a quiet get away spot with a great view.
There is a Queen (sleeps two) ocean facing bedroom identical to the Palm bedroom with large ocean facing balcony with double chaise, glass panels to enhance your view, double chaise on the deck. The room has a large private bath with a vanity where you can sit & put on make up. There is a television, a large closet & a chair & ottoman with lamp so that you can read while enjoying the view off the balcony.
The Double Queen (sleeps 4) bedroom has 2 queen beds & a large private bath with a shower/tub combo. Elevated windows provide lots of natural light in both the bedroom & the bath. There is an extended window seat with ocean view.
There is another double queen bedroom (sleeps 4) (one queen, one Murphy bed) that has a private bath with walk in shower. You can request that the Murphy bed be folded away so that you have a large queen bedroom if you prefer. There is an extended window seat with ocean view.
THE LIVING SPACES (4100 square fee inside and another 2000 square feet of deck/balcony/patio outside.
The breakfast nook feels like it is outside. Surrounded by tall windows on 3 sides it is a sunny morning place to enjoy your coffee. It features a large round glass that seats six.
The family room is an open configuration with a comfortable grey leather couch & two side chairs. The TV is hidden in a cabinet & rises on command. I’ve installed a DVR, upgraded to premium TV channels & enabled you to purchase movies from On Demand (which will then be billed to your credit card once we receive the Time Warner Cable bill). There is free high speed Internet.
The living room is wall-to-wall tall ocean facing windows. It’s all sun, sky & sand that stretch out before you in an uninterrupted panorama. Even the fireplace has a glass flue so that nothing impedes the view. There is a high-end stereo with remote controls and a large CD library.
The Dining Room features an exquisite glass vase table with interior lighting that seats six. During the summer of 2013 we will be replacing this with a 10-foot by 4-foot glass table supported by seashells that will accommodate 14, & the glass vase table will be moved to the breakfast nook. There is a buffet full of all those things you might need to serve a big dinner.
THE LAUNDRY & GUEST BATHROOMS
Hidden in a back corner so that you don’t have to listen to the washer & dryer is a large laundry. It has the usual washer & dryer, an in wall ironing board with iron, a utility tub? & cupboard space to store the bulky items you don’t want to cram into the kitchen. There are two guest half baths on the main floor
THE PARKING AREA & FREE SHUTTLE
You can park four cars under the house, fully protected on 5 sides. We are going to request permission to install garage doors on the 6th so; permit pending this will be done in late 2013 when we will not be disturbing guests.
There is a FREE Dunes Buggy to Shelter Cove Marina for shopping, dining al fresco & a great deal of seasonal live entertainment. Through 2013 there is one hour of free tennis daily at the Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center.

Hilton Head is consistently voted one of the top ten beaches in the USA. We had 319 loggerhead turtles' nests on the beach this year, one of them right at Ocean's Gem, have seen 7 deer in the last week. Sightings of dolphins are an every day thing, and we had an eagle land on the beach out front to dine on a fish. If you like to fish, there is great fishing right out front.
If you like to eat out, we have more options than you can begin to try in a week. From high end gourmet (Robert Irvine's 'Eat' geing a great experience) to the best (very best) burrito you will ever eat (at Amigo's - a strip mall dive with the best marguerite in town).
Like history? from thousands year old shark's teeth to be found on the beach to the Civil War cannon ball we found while planting, this is a fascinating place. Ever see a Revolutionary War soldiers grave? They're here.
Prefer water sports? There is not much you can't do here. Like to kayak with dolphins? go oyster picking? wind surfing? Para flying? Ziplining?
