A great week once again. This apartment is simply the best, and Cath makes it happen. A warm welcome as usual, and lots of goodies.
We'll return as soon as possible.
The apartment is exactly as others have described and Cath is terrific. We loved it!
That said, here are some additional observations.
Funchal is a vertical city, and streets that may appear to be one block away on a map, may actually be 60-70 feet up or down. That is the case of this property which is one block above the Estrada Monumental (the main street of the Lido area) I only mention this so one is not taken by surprise.
We followed Cath's advice to get to Estrada Monumental from the apartment. There are 90 steps down (and of course, back up), but they are broken into several short platforms and one large terrace of the Mesalusa Restaurant. Alternatively, continue on the road to the left to the first street to the right, the Rua Casa Branca, where you'll find the oft mentioned O Dragoiero Restaurant across the street at the corner. Continue on down to the Estrada Monumental. This route is a bit longer, but easier for those stair challenged.
As for locating the Wine Shop that sells bus tickets: we could not find the Yacht Club mentioned, but did find the wine shop across from the Sunrise Restaurant, easily recognized on the ocean side of the Estrada Monumental, just to the right as you get down the stairs beyond the supermarket. The proprietor was very helpful in explaining the bus system.
For easy reference, the nearest hotel on the Estrada Monumental is the Florasol Resort Hotel, handy for taking a taxi, as they seldom come by the street above where the apartment is. I found using Google maps and entering the starting address of the apartment then entering the address I wanted, say to a restaurant, then clicking the walking directions (little man), that gave me the walking route.
A return visit to our "home away from home" and the usual warm welcome from Cath. Our first night dinner is always at "O Dragoeiro" - good food and another warm welcome.
This visit we tried "Restaurante do Forte" at Forte de Sao Tiago in Funchal. They offer a four course menu (plenty of choices) indluding aperitif, good wines, and coffee, for €39, and it is well worth it. Fabulous food, both in presentation and taste.
Better start planning for our next visit!
We returned home yesterday after a lovely 1 week stay in this apartment. There were 4 adults in our group. I agree with everything the previous reviewers have written on this site - the apartment is exactly as described and the photos provide a true impression of what it's like.
Before we arrived, we weren't sure exactly where on the Val d'Ajuda, the apartment was situated - but if you look on a map, it is more or less behind the 'Melia Madeira Mare' hotel, and the photo taken from the apartment balcony is the 'Enotel' (previously known as Tivoli).
Cath arranged transport to & from the airport, met us at the apartment upon our arrival, and provided a really nice welcome pack (fruit, wine, bread, water, cheese, ham, eggs, butter) - which was greatly appreciated.
The apartment was very clean, well maintained and well equipped with a variety of kitchen utensils, plates, plenty glasses etc. We enjoyed the space of the apartment - especially with 2 bathrooms - and we sat in the sun on the balcony - even in January!
The apartment is well located for buses - just a few mins walk to the bus stop to and from Funchal town. The wine shop next to the Yacht Club sells bus tickets - & the staff there are helpful if you need a bit of advice on bus travel.
We visited the local coffee shop (called Ravioli) several times and we loved it too.
Try the 'jeep' tours if you like the scenery - you get to see some amazing views of the island.
We went on the 'Santa Maria' boat trip (30 euros pp for 3 hours) and we saw lots of dolphins - amazing!!
The 'Forum' shopping centre is an easy 10 mins walk - and close by is a restaurant called 'Rubi' - someone recommended it to us - at first sight it looked more like a cafe than a restaurant, but the food was fabulous, cheaper than most tourist restaurants, big portions, delicious, and the wine's well priced too!
We also ate at a local restaurant called 'O Dragoiero', we sat in the garden in a January evening (lovely!) and had a 3 course set menu for 23 euros - good food - and there were several other restaurants to choose from too - all looked good.
We also liked 'Petiscos' restaurant near the Melia Madeira Mare, we liked 'O Fort' in the old town, 'Real Canoe' near the Grand Hotel - in fact everywhere was good!!
Try the 'passion fruit pudding' - we chose this nearly every time - it is different in every restaurant - but always delicious.
There are a couple of good supermarkets within walking distance too.
A lovely place
This apartment complex (Hab d'Ajuda) off Estrada Monumental, enjoys a central location in the heart of the Lido; a well-known area in Funchal where you will find some of the best restaurants and bars in Madeira. This is a pleasant private residential block. It is ideal for families and young visitors who are looking for pleasant and comfortable accommodation with excellent standards of quality and service. There are extensive leisure areas with swimming pools offering stunning views over the coastal strip of the Lido area.
