Hawksbill sits at an elevation of about 140 feet on a hill behind the harbor at Great Cruz Bay. The lovely primary view overlooks the harbor and there are also scenic views of Hart Bay, Chocolate Hole Bay, St. James Island, St Thomas and other distant islands. This charming, semi private villa faces south and west so the pool and sun deck get lots of sun throughout the day, then a colorful Caribbean sunset in the early evening, and after dark the lights of distant islands sparkle on the distant horizon. The house is framed by lush coconut palms and a green hillside garden screens Hawksbill from its neighbors. This site in Great Cruz Bay is an unusually convenient location that is less than a 5 minute drive from the restaurants, bars and boutiques of the colorful village of Cruz Bay, and it’s a 4 minute walk to the restaurants, beach bar and spa at the four star Westin Resort located just below you.
Hawksbill is one of the few villas on St. John where all the living spaces and bedrooms, plus the pool and sundecks are all on the same level, making this an ideal villa for guests who have trouble with stairs, and families with young children. You park on the same level as the pool deck and enter the living room through French doors. Beyond the living room the kitchen and both bedrooms are on the left, and the media room/den is on the right. There is a sun deck off the south side of the villa and the private pool and pool deck are on the west side.
The two air conditioned bedrooms (king and queen beds) are similar in size and furnishings, and each has a tiled private bath. Both are decorated in a charming tropical decor, including lace curtains that billow softly with the gentle trade winds. Opening windows and ceiling fans provide excellent ventilation and both bedrooms are located on the north side of the house to keep them cool and comfortable.
The living room is bordered on the south and west by an L shaped deck and nine fully screened French doors with arched windows that open to create a pleasurable indoor/outdoor environment. Honey wicker furniture, ocean views, and the sound of palm fronds rustling in the gentle breeze create a romantic and relaxing environment. The TV/DVD is located in the media room which overlooks Hart Bay and Chocolate Hole Harbor and a hillside of multicolored bougainvillea. The media room has a 32' flat screen cable TV/DVD and AM/FM stereo/CD.
The kitchen is a centrally located cooking and socializing environment, with white cabinets and mahogany trim and white and cobalt blue tiled countertops. It is equipped with a 4 burner gas stove, dishwasher, microwave, refrigerator/freezer, double sink, toaster, blender, coffeemaker and a complete set of china, dinnerware, cooking utensils and kitchen tools and equipment. A gas grill is just off the kitchen on the deck.
The interior dining table seats four and there is also a table for four on the sun deck.
We’re a family from Ohio who loves our home state, but we also love to dream about escaping to St. John on some of those challenging winter days we experience in the Midwest. For years we had talked about owning rather than renting a villa on St. John, so when a unique opportunity presented itself, we decided to become part of the St. John villa owner community. We had been looking for a 4-5 bedroom home and we ended up buying a total of 6 bedrooms, but instead of buying one home we bought four. The four homes are all neighbors here on the hillside and the lush vegetation gives them all pretty good privacy. When Hawksbill is rented, we stay at Jasmine, Perriwinkle or Rosebay and we’re still home. It worked out better than we thought, and now we can schedule those last minute St. John getaways that make mid-western winters so much easier to look forward to.
We love the views, especially the sunsets, and we love that wonderful Caribbean sunshine that floods the decks for the entire day. We’re also big fans of Cruz Bay, a small Caribbean village that has a warmth, friendliness and fun personality like no other place we’ve traveled; it’s always just so delightful. The Caribbean music and liveliness is the essence of the old welcoming and fun loving Caribbean spirit. So we really wanted to be close to Cruz Bay, without being actually in the town itself. Instead we’re less than 5 minutes away on a quiet hillside overlooking a much quieter and more tranquil harbor – it’s the best of both worlds.
There is one thing that certainly makes this villa unique. Hawksbill is one of a family of four villas, all within an easy walk but all pretty much concealed from view from the others. For couples this allows everyone to rent their own villa at a cost less than what you would pay for a 6-bedroom house. You can have togetherness when you want it, and privacy when you need it. The styling of Hawksbill, although perhaps not unique, is certainly quite attractive with its native stonework, French doors, arched windows and cathedral ceilings. The French doors are all screened and the house is sited so that it gets a nice pleasant breeze most of the day. All in all, with the harbor views, sunsets and privacy this a very charming and romantic home that is a great vacation home for 1-2 couples or a small family.
