Walnut Creek House Rental Photos and Description

2100 Sq. Ft./210 sq meters Home

Traveler's Rest has two options. First: Exclusive use for up to two people when the owner is not present. Guests have exclusive use of home. Second: Shared Use is also for up to two people with the understanding that the owner shares the home. For more information, read further. Rates are discounted during periods of shared use. See the rate section for this information.

Please note: owner occupies the home except during periods of exclusive use. Your privacy is completely respected.

Location: The edge of beautiful Walnut Creek, CA, 40 minutes from San Francisco and Sacramento airports, Napa and Sonoma Valleys; 30 minutes from Berkeley and San Ramon/Pleasanton. Downtown San Francisco is 40 minutes by BART train. The BART train tracks are close by Traveller's Rest.

Accommodations: The guest bedroom: guests have a private bedroom, en-suite bathroom, large walk-in closet and access to common areas. Enjoy the living and dining rooms as well as the kitchen for preparing your meals. The hot tub is yours; the two furnished decks and surrounding trees, gardens and peace entice relaxation. Make yourself 'at home'; the owner is sensitive to the privacy needs of the guests and will retreat to assure those needs. The owner's bedroom is separated by a hall, bathroom and closet. This is a no smoking property- inside and outside the home. The floors are pristine so socks or slippers are worn by guests and shoes are kept at the front door.

The guest room's queen-sized bed (a Westin Heavenly mattress) and all linens are immaculate. The en-suite bathroom is compact with a stall shower, toilet and sink. WI-FI is available throughout. A washer, dryer, ironing board with iron and hair dryer are available in the utility room. The home is air-conditioned. The living room opens onto the deck, has a special gas heater and a TV.

Mt. Diablo, seen from the front of the home, has fine hiking trails. Your well-traveled host can suggest many activities as well as excellent restaurants or shopping found in the upscale and attractive city of Walnut Creek.

The home is not suitable for those with mobility issues due to the many outdoor and indoor steps. Driveway parking for one car is available next to the front entryway steps. Additional parking is available on the street. Pets are not allowed.

BART train tracks do pass near the guest room window, but the 'wooshing' sound is not disruptive.

For further information, please feel free to email your host so your stay will be just as you like it.

About Gene Harmon

The owner is retired after owning a logistics management and transportation consulting firm for nearly 30 years.

Gene Harmon purchased this house in 2011

Why Gene Harmon chose Walnut Creek

This is my home. There is plenty of space for privacy for guests. It has all new bedroom, living room and dining room furniture. The spa and outdoor deck offer the opportunity to enjoy the birds and critters that live nearby. The home has quick access to BART and highways in all directions. I purchased this secluded property due to proximity to Walnut Creek, the exceptional construction, the quality of the materials and workmanship and the gardens.

What makes this house unique

There is lots of natural light and plenty of privacy. Jump in the spa on cool nights, watch the stars and enjoy the evening. The living room has a gas fired stove to bring warmth on those cool winter evenings.

Travelers Rest

  • 4 of 5

The host was great and went out of his way to make our stay as comfortable as can be. We had no issues sharing the home as he was in his own quarters most of the time. Accomidations were clean and queen bed very comfortable. Walk to downtown a little far for us, but uber a great option for $7.00. Bart close snd s little noisy, but tolerable. I'd stay here again for sure.

It was so easy to book online and the owner very easy to deal with. When we arrived all was as promised! Although the owner was in town, we rarely saw him as he respected our privacy. It was perfect for the two of us and so convenient to everything we needed. Close to downtown Walnut Creek, within walking distance to many restaurants and shopping. Everything was furnished and very clean. Truly enjoyable. We will stay there again.

Traveler's Rest worked perfect for our trip. This beautiful setting was relaxing and beautiful. We sat on the deck and enjoyed the surroundings. We saw a tiny hummingbird! The owner shared his knowledge of the area and offered us tips and advice on nearby attractions. (including maps and brochures) The downtown has a huge outdoor mall if you care to shop and the BART system makes it easy to get around the area. We would highly recommend Traveler's Rest and look forward to coming back some day.

9 days in paradise

  • 5 of 5

There aren't words that can describe what a true 'Travelers Rest' this place was for my body and spirit. Gene was beyond wonderful, always available if and when I had a question or needed advice. The view from the deck was Priceless, serene and all mine. No hotel could have been cleaner or have anywhere near the amenities provided by Gene at Travelers Rest. Only a short walk to the County Connection, Walnut Creek's public transportation $2.00 ride to Bart Station where you board a fast train into San Francisco @ 35-40 min ride. Bart takes you anywhere in the Bay area you need or want to go and even goes into the San Francisco Airport.

As Gene mentions the Bart line runs near his home but you really don't hear it after the first day and the gardens in the yard are beautifully landscaped and provide the perfect cover so that you wouldn't even know the overhead was nearby.

There was a humming bird that perched on a limb (in all my 57 years I have never seen a humming bird perch anywhere) near me every morning as I enjoyed my coffee on the deck and that little bird would fuss and make sure I was aware that it was his feeder and basically he was only letting me share his view of paradise.

I hope I am blessed to one day again return to what i call my hide away in Walnut Creek. If you do book this set aside a portion of a day to visit Walnut Creek's Lindsey Wildlife Museum, truly a treasure with resident raptors of various species, wonderful exhibits and volunteers and staff that will sweep you off your feet with their hospitality, knowledge and love for the wild life rescues they have been entrusted.

Back to this rental, I almost hate to tell you how wonderful it is because if this secret really gets out there there I fear there would be a years waiting list. Thank you so much for a wonderful wonderful respite on my journey

A great place to stay for less than local hotels

  • 5 of 5

When we travel, we always check for a rental home before looking at hotels. Renting a home usually gives you more flexibility than a hotel room, and the per day cost is often close, or in the case of this home, it was less. That makes this decision a no brainer. The house was easy to locate, because it was so close to the major interstate in the area. It was also about a 5 minute drive to the BART station. The house was clean, comfortable, and had a nice bonus in the form of a hot tub on the deck. The landscaping was very nice, and the house is somewhat secluded since it sits at the end of a short driveway that is shared with the neighbors. We were there for some interviews and house searching in the Bay Area, which can be a bit of a stressful time. It was nice to arrive home to something much nicer than a standard hotel room. We could do laundry, which allows you to travel with less, prepare a meal or two, rather than having to guess which restaurants were worth going to, and at the end of the day, we could soak in the hot tub under the stars for a while. It made the entire process much easier to deal with. The home is a bit older, but it has been thoroughly modernized, which was nice. There is plenty of space to park, and due to the secluded nature, there were no worries about the car at night. The owner mentions the BART trains passing near the back corner of the house. This is indeed true, but it was really barely noticeable. The trains themselves move very fast, so even the longest of them only take a few seconds to pass. They are also very quiet as trains go, and there are no horns blaring, since the access to the tracks is restricted by a large fence. To be honest, I never even noticed them. All in all, it is a very nice home to stay in, with no real downsides that I could see. It is cheaper than all but the cheapest hotels in the area, and a much better option for the private hot tub alone. It is very close to many supermarkets, including Whole Foods, Trader Joes, Safeway, and a Super Target. All of these are within a 5 minute drive. We never needed to venture out any further, especially since there are also many nice restaurants in the same area. If you wish to travel into San Francisco, the nearby BART station will get you there is about 45 minutes on a very clean train. This is a good way to avoid some of the high rental rates for homes in the immediate SF area, which charge a premium price for being much closer.

Urban oasis

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed this very comfortably furnished and outfitted home near major transportation venues. Even the closeness of the Bart tracks quickly became something charming and part of the soundscape. For serious bird watchers, the garden with its screen of foliage provided cover and perches for humming birds, the oak titmouse, and hooded orioles. We loved sitting on the deck mornings and evenings. The nearness to San Francisco for sightseeing and fine dining in Walnut Creek rounded out our experience.
