I moved to Cuenca in November of 2010 (from Seattle Washington) and am enjoying my new life immensely. I enjoy sharing my experiences with people that are considering the BIG MOVE themselves.
Beverly purchased this apartment in 2011
Cuenca is an amazing city with a perfect climate (for someone from Seattle), rich culture, and warm and friendly people. When I bought this property I was looking for a small place in the historic center that would provide a quiet and peaceful retreat for people visiting the city. Having stayed in the city center during my first trip to Cuenca, I know how miserable it can be to not get any sleep due to constant noise. Since this apartment is located on the back side of the building it is completely protected from not only all the street noise but the smog that is a problem in Cuenca.
QUIET, SAFE, and the LOCATION couldn't be better. Architecture in the city center is interesting and unique and this apartment is a fine example of that. With my interior design background I was able to see the potential and created a beautiful and cozy retreat for visitors. This apartment has everything you'll need to live comfortably for a few days or several weeks.
This was our first trip to Ecuador, our first trip to Cuenca, and our first time using VRBO. And we were very successful finding a great place to stay in Cuenca. And as a bonus, we met and became friends with Bev, the owner of this apartment.
The apartment is exactly as described by Bev and the other reviews by guests. It is located close to everything, it is very well appointed with every creature comfort we needed or might ever need (including nice kitchen, washer/dryer, loaner cell phone, free calls to the U.S., extensive video collection, etc.), and it was decorated with very nice art. And it costs less than an impersonal hotel!
Would we stay here again? Absolutely! Would we recommend this to our friends? Absolutely!
What more can we ask for? Bev’s famous lemon meringue pie for breakfast! :-)
Beverly’s apartment is very centrally located, practically the exact midpoint of El Centro, so you’re within 7 blocks from just about anything you might want to see in the historic district. In particular, it’s just a block from Parque Calderon, the Old and New Cathedrals, and popular restaurants such as Don Colon, Raymipampa and Tutto Freddo. Essentially next door to the building are a medium sized supermarket on one side, and a very nice hotel restaurant on the other. Numerous bakeries and ice cream shops are also less than 2 blocks away.
We stayed in Beverly’s apartment for 8 nights, and found it to be exactly as described in the listing and shown in the pictures. The furniture and decorations demonstrate the hand of an interior designer, which is, in fact, what Beverly is. Artwork was carefully chosen to give a tasteful sense of Ecuadorean culture. One of the pieces was painted a local artist whose work appears in local buildings. There is also a one-of-a-kind mural, surrounding a special indoor-outdoor seating area, that really makes her place stand out. The whole place has a lot of personal touches.
On the more practical front, there is a comfortable custom made bed, a powerful washer and dryer combo, DirectTV with numerous English language channels and movies, a well-equipped kitchenette, and both a MagicJack phone in the apartment as well as a local cell phone which you can carry around town with you.
Beverly is friendly, approachable and easy to work with. She responds quickly to online communication and is readily reachable by phone. She is happy to answer any questions, and is a straight shooter. And on top of that, she will pick you up at the airport when you arrive, which is really nice if this is your first time in Cuenca.
BTW, I’m not sure what the other poster means by the “smell”, because we didn’t notice anything during our stay.
We’ve stayed at at least 20 vacation rentals around the world, and Beverly’s is probably the single best value of them all. Her place is clearly a labor of love, not simply a rental apartment.
Gr8 location in central Cuenca. Very small but functional 1 br condo & has everything you need. You will be picked up at airport but must take taxi back. OK since very close and cheap. It is as advertised. Tile floor very cold so bring slippers or wear socks. There is a small space heater which helps and tons of blankets to keep warm. Only negative is the sometime bad smells from the pipes. I guess Ecuador doesn't use p traps.
We could not have been more pleased with this GEM of a find in the heart of the El Centro district in Cuenca! Everything was EXACTLY as described on the website, including the photos. This property was clean, and the owner, Bev, is very conscientious about upkeep and maintenance. Bev was very prompt and responsive at answering all my questions and possible concerns, particularly with this being our first trip to Ecuador.
Her Apartment Handbook is a very nice touch to any additional questions about the area for restaurants or things to do. Although her DVD library is very extensive, we did not get to use it, even once, because we were so busy! The same was true with her Direct TV subscription--we were too busy to sit in the apartment and chill with TV or a DVD!
We appreciated having a washer and dryer to use! We would always seek this feature out in any travels that we do.
You don't need to worry about ANY security with this apartment location as there is 4 levels of security to get to this apartment! Even a single gal traveling alone would be completely safe in this neighborhood and staying in this apartment alone.
We would certainly recommend this apartment to our friends and to others! It was cozy and felt like a home away from home for the 2 of us! We would certainly stay here again!
Our ONLY suggestion would be to consider having a box of tissues in the bathroom along with 2 extra large towels and hand towels.
Thanks so much, Bev! :o)
On a previous trip to Cuenca, we had stayed in a hostel. On this trip, for about the same money, we stayed in this wonderful little apartment and found it to be a much better experience. The apartment is in a perfect location, just a block from Park Calderon. We felt safe, even in the evenings after dark, coming and going. And the apartment itself is safe and secure, nestled inside an office building behind four locked doors.
The apartment had everything that we needed for our stay. The kitchen was fully equipped and the flat screen TV (with DIRECTV and a full library of DVDs) was very nice. The bathroom was just fine and there was plenty of hot water for showers. The bed was comfortable and there was plenty of blankets (and even a small portable heater) for the cool Cuenca nights. Our stay was in June, with lows in the 40’s at night. We found that the apartment could get cool in the early mornings and evenings with its tile floors, granite counters and concrete walls. We did use the heater most evenings and highly suggest bringing slippers and/or thick socks to walk around the apartment. There are no windows in the apartment, but there are a couple frosted skylights that provide daylight.
There is a loaner cellphone that could certainly be handy but we didn't need to use, but we did use the Magic Jack phone a number of times to make and receive free calls to the States. And Bev was wonderful to deal with – before we arrived, during our stay and afterwards. And she also was able to pick us up at the airport and check us in the apartment when we arrived. All in all – a very nice stay.
This apartment is a great place to "land" in Cuenca. The location is unbeatable: you are right in the middle of El Centro within easy walking distance of just about anyplace you'd want to go. The apartment itself is small, but the layout makes excellent use of the space available, and a lot of thought went into furnishing and equipping the space so that guests have everything they need. The kitchen was really easy to cook in - the appliances are high end and you have more cookware, utensils, etc than you usually find in a vacation rental. The apartment was immaculate, and the weekly housekeeping was thorough and not intrusive. The bed was super comfortable, and there was always hot water for showers. The cable tv features a good package with lots of English channels and the internet signal was strong and reliable. The availability of a cell phone and a Magic Jack fo calls to the US were nice bonuses, as was the guide to Cuenca that Bev has put together for her guests. I really appreciated her accurate description of the apartment when I first contacted her - it is tucked into an office building and there is no direct access to the outside. However, there is a lot of natural light from the glass roof in the kitchen and the faux terrace off the bedroom, and lamps and ceiling lights are plentiful. Last, you cannot go wrong with an owner like Bev. She genuinely wants her guests to be satisfied, and goes the extra mile to make sure that happens.
Located on one of the busiest and safest streets in the city center. Walk to everything - Museums; historic sites; churches; some of the best restaurants in the city; bars; coffee shops; art galleries; tourist center; indigenous markets (crafts, fresh fruits and vegetables); grocery stores; liquor stores; boutiques (selling clothing, shoes, purses, fine jewelry, handcrafts); flower markets; free concerts; parks; and rivers. There is a grocery store next door to the apartment building. It is walking distance to Central Bus Station for out of the city excursions. Just minutes to the Airport.
