We bought this cabin after years of family vacations to Grand Marais...it is truly a blessing and a lifelong dream come true. We share it with friends, family, and you when not being used by our family.
This home (cannot call it a cabin) is absolutely beautiful, right on the water, amazing view. The inside of the home was so well laid out, the owners say its small but it does not feel that way at all. the beds were very confortable, loved the kitchen, dining and TV area. we stayed in the lower level and was so private with another full bath, desk area and another tv area to watch movies. we spent alot of time sightseeing and eating out at all the fabulous restaurants in Grand Marais, it was so nice coming to this beautiful home at night to relax.
We were looking for a retreat location after a very busy month. We were thinking we wouldn't find something so nice on such of a short notice. John was very accommodating to squeeze us in between other reservations. We were very surprised at all of the wonderful amenities of their home and the amazing view of Lake Superior. We really enjoyed walking on the beach, looking out at the lake, and relaxing with evening campfires. My boyfriend especially liked the dry wood from the garage and how easy it was to start up the campfire. We loved having a gas grill to prepare meals at the home as well as being very close to Grand Marais to dine out. John was so easy to work with and we will defiantly plan to stay again when we get a chance.
We have stayed multiple times at this beautiful, warm & cozy family cabin. Absolutely worth it, highly recommend!
Four of us, all adults, spent a long Memorial Day weekend here at Stone Throw. The cabin is amazing, the view is amazing. Even our spring weather was amazing. Best of all was sitting around the fire every evening, gazing out over Lake Superior. Relaxation and complete contentment. We were restored.
John and Julie were friendly, accessible and extremely easy to work with at every step along the way. They went out of their way to explain that that cabin was only 1200 sq feet. However, the interior is wonderfully planned, and there was more than enough space for 4 adults. And the quality of the building inside and out and all the amenities included are top notch.
If you've never been to Grand Marais or if, like us, you've been to Grand Marais dozens and dozens of times, this is a great base. We will be back. And we'll stay a whole next time, we hope!
It's been a few months, but if I close my eyes, it brings the vacation right back. The photos hardly do the cabin justice; the views of Lake Superior are absolutely breathtaking - and the giant windows upstairs and downstairs give you the perfect viewing opportunity from just a few feet away!! We did a lot of cooking - well stocked kitchen as far as prep and serving dishes (and grill and fire pit as well!) - Gene's Foods in Grand Marais is literally 2 minutes away. Plenty of great dining in the area too - enjoyed My Sister's Place in GM and also Naniboujou Lodge about 15 miles north on 61.
As far as the cabin itself, wonderful accomodations: comfortable beds (better than our own!!), huge downstairs bathtub/shower, as well as shower upstairs, plenty of space for the whole family to spread out and read, write, nap, sort rocks!!, etc. Also liked the huge selection of movies and board games for kids/families (we dealt with a few rainy days - but with the gorgeous fireplace and spacious cabin, NO one complained or got bored!!!). Also found some great "regional reading" around the house - loved the big photography books (coffee table style) of the greater Lake Superior region and also lots to browse through in the binder of travel info!!
Did lots of hiking: Cascade River, Temperance River, Brule River (Judge CR Magney), even spent a day on the Pigeon River/ at Grand Portage historic site, and of course did plenty of hiking right in Grand Marais: Artist's Point, the lighthouse "stroll," and Sweetheart's Bluff as well. If you don't want to leave the cabin area, the private "inlet" rock beach offers a nice short hike in and of itself! We shared it with large flocks of Canadian geese and saw many loons just off shore; also waved to several groups of sea kayakers out on day excursions, but other than that, saw NO ONE else on the beach!! So peaceful and restorative.
The only, only, ONLY complaint I have is that it would've been nice to have access to laundry facilities, as we stayed for a whole week and with all the hiking, socks and pants get a little dirty to wear more than once!! I have stayed at cabins with laundry facilities before, and there is nothing like coming HOME from vacation with suitcases full of CLEAN laundry instead of DIRTY!! HAHA!! However, it did not detract from the vacation at all, and since we knew in advance, we tried to pack "enough" essentials.
WE LOVED THIS CABIN and HIGHLY RECOMMEND!! PERFECT FIT for family of 5!
It was our first time visiting Grand Marais. The town is lovely with lots of good places to eat and visit. The cabin was fantastic! So beautifully decorated, we felt like we were home. Everything we needed was there (towels, dishes, cookware, firewood, smores kit, bicycles, etc.) The lake views are terrific. We watched kayakers, sea gulls, ducks, and loons. So pleasant to sit on the desk and rock and just enjoy the peace. We didn't see any neighbors our entire stay. The photos in the listing were just as the cabin is. Cabin is so close to town. Only a five minute drive. Very close to the Gunflint Trail, or drive to Grand Portage, other state and national parks nearby. Would certainly recommend this property to friends and relatives. I hope to visit there again.
