Alex Meyer purchased this apartment in 2001
The area here is one of the last laid back residential feeling areas in upper Manhattan which had proximity to all the things I cherish(parks, museums,Columbia U).I wanted to be part of a neighborhood that has flavor and is growing with out being sterilized.Could'nt be happier in Manhattan
My apartment has many arced windows, roof access and a view to the Americas largest Cathedral right from the studio Bay window. The Park is directly across the street and Central Park a stone's throw.I enjoy that it is a new building with the old style charm from the outside without all the slapped together feeling you get in most affordable coops in the city.
Veeeeeeeeeeeeeeery cool couple who give off the aire of being young purpose seekers despite being entrenched in real parenthood.I would love to see these two on their own turf. Félicitez les admirables français
Alex was incredibly helpful with my last-minute booking, arranging to be home to get me keys in the afternoon and giving me a quick tour. The room itself was both comfortable and clean, and it had wonderful details as well, such as coffee makings and cups. I highly recommend the location and the host!
My husband and I are "budget" travelers (when we get the opportunity)... we hate the cost of over-priced hotels, particularly for just a night. Alex's apartment was in the perfect location for our over-night in NYC. Close to the subway to take you wherever your heart desires in the city and a close walk to Central Park. There are a variety of restaurants in the neighborhood and a Dunkin' Donuts is right around the corner. Alex is super-friendly (his dog too ~ don't be fooled by his awkward smile!) and is prepared with helpful information for places to check out in the area upon your arrival. He had plans for the weekend so we had the place to ourselves for the night. We stayed in the room that shows the flattened futon and there was plenty of room for our bags, a closet for hanging clothing, a small refrigerator is in the room as well for your drinks, etc. as well as a few odds and end for eating/drinking. The apartment is on the 5th floor (stairs only) so that is something to keep in mind if you prefer an elevator, but that wasn't an issue for us.
We had a great time and I am giving this rental 5 stars.
Price! Good accommodations become stellar at this price.
Location! If you are at all put off by the Harlem location; don't be. The area is safe and walk-able, and in my opinion, beautiful.
Alex. Clearly Alex is an extrovert. He's a people person. We are a quiet and reserved couple. We were most concerned about a shared space, but Alex is rarely there, and when he is he does a great job of disappearing. He is mindful of his guests.
The listing claims air conditioning. Alex had not installed the window unit because he felt it was still cold. He clearly likes very warm weather. I do not. We had to sleep with the window open. This eventually made the room comfortable to sleep, but it did increase the street noise considerably. I require a cool room to sleep (65-68 degrees Fahrenheit, with a breeze from a ceiling fan is my preference) and there is everything in that room except a fan. I am from the South where the air conditioning runs year round and the sound is my preferred white noise to sleep by. I made air conditioning a priority when shopping for a rental, and there was none.
Alex is perhaps, too helpful. He's well meaning, but we had done extensive research and planning for our vacation. It was nice when he provided some tips upon arrival, but the constant recommendations were a little insulting to me. I'm clearly nitpicking, but it was annoying.
Again, despite my very minor grievances, I give this rental 5 stars and recommend it for adventurous young couples, and anyone who is on a budget and doesn't mind a 5th floor walk-up.
Alex is a great host and was very accommodating throughout the time I was there. The apartment is very clean and the room that you would be staying in is pretty big, has great lighting, and comes equipped everything you could possibly need (microwave, mini fridge, closet, drawers, etc.). The apartment has a great atmosphere and was pleasant to come back to after a day of exploring (minus the hike up to the 5th floor). This property is only 2 blocks from the subway which can take you basically anywhere and is very easy in learning how to navigate.
Alex knows a lot about the city and was able to answer any questions that I had for him. He offered me a list of recommendations regarding restaurants, night life, and attractions that were great to check out didn't cost too much either.
Overall, I highly recommend this property! Considering the price and location, I don't think you'll be able to find a better deal. If I ever return to New York, I will definitely try and book this rental again.
Alex's apartment is very cool and really close to the north edge of Central Park and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. The 116th St. subway station is two blocks away, so it is a in a very convenient location to get anywhere in Manhattan. There are many convenient restaurants nearby includng Melba's (delicious soul food) and Dunkin' Donuts.
Alex has fully furnished the apartment with plenty of dishes in the kitchen, plenty of extra towels, and an awesome canopy bed. It was always nice to come "home" from sightseeing to a home, not a hotel room. And with Alex's prices, you can't beat that!
