We’re a big family from New York who absolutely love to get away to St. John for a tropical vacation, especially in the midst of a harsh NY winter. Like most families we love to be together, but sometimes we also need some privacy and our own space. So we designed a roomy villa that brings people together by creating multiple areas for socializing, but it also provides many comfortable and private spaces where someone can have a moment to themselves. When we started looking at the cost of building on St. John, an island without an airport, we went into a state of semi shock, and the awe came much later. But we said, what the heck, let’s do this right, so we hired one of St. John’s best builders and also retained a great interior designer and we built a really nice home in a really sweet location. This is a home of contrasting themes; it’s big enough for 12 but also cozy for two or four, it’s well-appointed and comfortable but not lavish or overdone, and it’s elegant and yet still casual. The upper level is perfect for one family or 1-2 couples, and when you add in the lower level you more than double the living space and create so much room that even with 12 people its never crowded. The wet bar, pool and large decks make this an ideal villa for luxurious outdoor living, and the great floor plan does the same for indoor living. Whether you’re a big family, or a single couple, we bet that you’ll love Ciellodonna.
We chose this harborside location because we wanted to be on the water, but we wanted a calm, protected shoreline where our kids could enjoy snorkeling, swimming and paddle boarding without high winds, pounding surf and rough seas. We also really enjoy looking at the boats floating lazily on the turquoise waters of the harbor; there’s something very soothing about this beautiful seascape. We live in inland New York where there are no ocean cruising sailboats in anyone’s front yard, but they’re here in St. John and they’re a constant delight to gaze at. It’s hard to describe but sometimes this harbor view, with its midday brilliant water colors and early evening stillness, has a stress reducing, almost hypnotic effect. Even though we adore this tranquil location, we also love being an easy 8 minutes from the fabulous restaurants and the fun Caribbean atmosphere of Cruz Bay. Fortunately, that’s the beauty of St. John, tranquility and excitement can coexist within a 2 mile radius. We found both, and you will also, on the water’s edge at Chocolate Hole Harbor.
We’ve seen quite a few St. John homes and our villa design seems to be somewhat unique. Designing and building a home with a curved front creates much more of a challenge, but it is esthetically more pleasing, and because of the curvature people on the bedroom decks don’t see each other, thereby creating precious visual privacy. The poolside wet bar is not unique, but it’s much appreciated when we’re having pool parties for the kids, and especially liked by the older kids in the evening. Of course our location is not completely unique because there are other homes on the harbor, but thanks to the lush tropical vegetation we can only see the villas across the harbor. However we really think that this harborside setting offers a view that is as calm, comforting, and hypnotic as you can find on this island, or anywhere else. The hill on the other side of the harbor softens the trade winds, so they’re gentle and soothing and you never need a jacket on these decks, even long after the sun has set. Speaking of the sun, you get plenty of it because the house faces southeast, but both decks have covered areas where you can be outside enjoying the view and also be sheltered from the sun.
