PARADISE IN KAINALIU

Kainaliu House Rental Photos and Description

Red Gate is in the ahu’upua’a of lehu’ula, meaning the red of Hawaii and her people. It was probably part of the gardens of Lono, and with its rich, deep soil, wild taro and planted breadfruit and bananas--it is easy to imagine the Hawaiian farmers and Kona field system of the old days.

We are at an ideal elevation for these traditional foods and citrus, lychee, avocadoes and many other fruits and of course Kona coffee, all growing profusely in the gardens. There is a large mango tree that produces an abundance of mangoes in the spring and summer and everyday a few mangoes drop on to the soft lawn and mulch, even in the “off” season.

The flower grotto on the front porch is filled with flowering orchids and the lanai is the perfect

place to enjoy the gardens and sunset ocean view. The gardening tradition at Red Gate is organic and biodynamic, and the gardens are profuse with flowers and fruit trees bearing year round. Fruit is for your consumption. There are paths and trails that are fun to walk and that are full of surprises and seasonal perennials. This is an organic oasis for birds with birdbaths provided for their enjoyment and bird watching from the front lanai.

The house is spacious and light with classic wood floors and built in koa wood accents. A traditional window bed in the living room provides sleeping space for a child or a relaxing place to read or rest with a view of the gardens. the ambiance of the house reflects old Hawaii with the comfort of modern conveniences.

The front porch with French doors leads to the high ceiling living room and then to the hall and the formal dining room, two bedrooms, two baths and a second porch kitchen, which comes in handy when picking fruit from the garden or hosting an event.

The grounds at Red Gate make a beautiful tropical environment for a wedding or family gathering. Nature surrounds and embraces the house with magical views everywhere. It is peaceful, beautiful, and harmonious—an organic oasis that is an easy walk to Kainaliu Village with stores, galleries, restaurants, a coffee shop, historical Lanakila Church and the Aloha Theater.

There are two bedrooms. The Master bedroom has a King size bed. Bedroom 2 has a queen size bed and a futon bed. We provide additional futon mattress .

There are two full bathrooms with shower stalls and one tub. Linens and towels are included with the unit. Cable and Wifi are also provided.

Dining Room seats 6-8 guests. The kitchen is stocked with cookware, dishes and utensils. A cleaning service is available every two weeks.

There is parking space for 3-4 cars on site. Property is available for private events.

We are world travelers who are holistic, organic and spiritual and this is reflected in our gardeners, our food, our tools and our home. We enjoy beauty in our environment and want to share the aloha of the unique aina (land) that is Hawaii nei.

Stacey purchased this house in 1978

Red Gate is an organic sanctuary, a unique retreat in the small town of Kainaliu with small town conveniences, while close to beaches and resorts

Plenty of fruit to pick, flowers, orchids, bromeliads and exotic plants to find on the paths and in the nursery. The front lanai is the perfect spot to bird watch and to enjoy a favorite beverage at sunset.

TROPICAL RETREAT

  • 5 of 5
We are a party of four and had the pleasure of staying for 10 days at the Red Gate property.
The house is inviting, clean, comfortable and the kitchen very well equipped with everything you could possibly want to use.
The garden is well established, lush, just full of colour and it was such a treat to be able to pick fresh fruit for our breakfast.
We sat out each morning on the lanai, enjoying our coffee and attempting to identify all the different birds in the garden.
We found the various bird and plant identification books, along with the guide books on the Big Island that were made available at the house very useful.
The property manager, Stacey, was very easy to work with while respecting our privacy. She gave us suggestions on places to visit, tips on where to go and was quick to respond to any questions we had.
We also noticed the noise of commuter traffic but quickly adapted to it and it had little impact on our stay.
The welcome basket was full of fruit and huge avocados from the garden along with local beers, bottle of wine and a host of other goodies.
After staying at Red Gate, it really was a let down to move to a condo on another island for the remainder of our trip and it made us appreciate how lucky we were to be able to enjoy such a unique property.
We hope to return one day!

LOVELY!

  • 5 of 5
We came here for spring break with the kids. The whole property is as beautiful as seen on the internet. Stacey prepared us a generous welcome basket and there were beautiful, tropical flower arrangements everywere. The whole house is well stocked with everything you could possibly need for a relaxing vacation. The little community of Kealakekua is only a 3 minutes walk from the house with nice little places to eat and also some shops and a brand new shaved ice truck for the kids since today! Kona Joe coffee is next door and they have a beautiful, big patio overlooking the valley down to the ocean were you can enjoy a nice cappuccino.
The only thing we didn't like too much is that can you hear the traffic - but we are used to almost no car noise were we live - someone else might not notice it-:)
We would love to come back one day if possible!

We are at 1200 ft on Hualalai mountain. The most beautiful place to swim is a short 15min drive from our house, Kealakekua Bay, with a resident pod of dolphins and humpback whales in the winter months. After a day sightseeing and beaching, return to our cool gardens and the quaint amenities of island village life.

Notes:
This plantation style house was built in 1941, which makes it an antique by Hawaii standards. Lovingly maintained and situated on one acre of organic gardens which have become a refuge for the neighborhood birds. There is an abundance of fruit, flowers and pathways on the property.
