BERKSHIRE SPRING/SUMMER/FALL RENTAL

New Marlborough Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Private 2 Bedroom + Spare Room

Just renovated, this charming barn cottage is situated across from a small apple orchard on a quiet country lane in New Marlborough. Surrounded by several hundred acres of Wildlife Sanctuary and New Marlborough Land Trust, you can walk out your door onto hiking trails around Thousand Acre Lake and beyond.

The cottage (our former studio - we are both artists) has a living room, dining area, fully equipped kitchen, and bath. One bedroom has a queen bed, one bedroom has a single bed and a separate computer room/office (with free Wi-Fi) doubles as a third bedroom (I have a folding single bed). The total living space is 900 square feet, not counting the large deck off living room, which overlooks fields and woods and sunset. The cottage is near (six miles) the Yale Music School’s Norfolk Music Festival (great concerts with guest artists) and is a short (scenic!) drive on quiet country roads to Tanglewood, Jacob’s Pillow Dance (free outdoor afternoon performances by some of the best dance companies), Great Barrington (Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center) and Stockbridge, home of the Berkshire Theatre Festival, as well as the other main Berkshire attractions.

Less than two miles away is York Lake, which has a supervised, sandy beach (great for family swimming) with restrooms and picnic areas with grills and tables. Both York Lake and Thousand Acre Lake (a half mile down our road are excellent for wildlife viewing and kayaking, with the two kayaks we have, no charge. Also close by are two scenic waterfalls, Campbell Falls (see photo) and Umpachene Falls, both perfect for a refreshing dip on a hot day.

Also less than two miles away are the New Marlborough Old Inn on the Green Restaurant and the Southfield Store Cafe, two of the best restaurants in the Berkshires.

Our own house is across the road and down a bit from the cottage, and has raspberry and blueberry plantings, which you are welcome to pick when in season.

Available for monthly, weekly, or three day stays, Memorial Day through October, from $895. per week.

A GREAT VACATION RENTAL

  • 5 of 5
We recently spent a relaxing, restful week in the cottage, and we can confirm the other glowing reviews of the property. The cottage is very clean, cozy, and comfortable, and we really loved how secluded it is—as city dwellers, it was a treat to relax amidst the sounds of nature. We took advantage of the easy access to hiking and nature trails, including nearby Thousand Acre Swamp and York Lake. George was very helpful in leaving us plentiful maps and guides to the area. We also enjoyed dining at the Southfield Store Café close by (really good food at Mexican Night on Thursdays!) and in Great Barrington. We plan on returning to enjoy the cottage yet again.

LOVELY COTTAGE

  • 5 of 5
This cottage is an excellent place to get away from the city. The furnishings and design are simple and elegant. There is easy access to Great Barrington and the surrounding Berkshires; plenty of good restaurants close by too. And right outside the cottage are trails through a beautiful nature preserve as well as unpaved roads with almost no cars that provide for nice walks too. George is a great host: attentive to renters' needs but very considerate of privacy. We highly recommend this cottage for a quiet retreat from everyday life!

PARADISE IN THE WOODS

  • 5 of 5
Nestled in the woods, remote from cars, people and town, this little house is a piece of paradise. The only noise you hear are the birds or wildlife, the leafs or the rain falling... The house is perfectly maintained and clean with character and comfort. The owners are close by if anything but privacy is total. They are very nice and helpful. We will go back - for sure. Can't wait actually!

EXCEEDED OUR EXPECTATIONS IN EVERY WAY

  • 5 of 5
We just returned from a perfect 3 night stay at this lovely cottage in a magnificent, serene rural setting during the fall color spectacular in the Berkshires. Very accommodating, knowledgeable, but non-intrusive owners. Their preparations for us were excellent, their welcome was warm and everything was handled efficiently according to our contract.

The simple, recently renovated cottage is immaculate, with tasteful, comfortable furnishings. High quality linens, very well-supplied kitchen. Our experience compared very favorably with our cottage "gite" experience in a Provencal vineyard earlier this year. We especially enjoyed the beautiful, uncrowded hiking trails near the lake just down the road...and sampling a few antique apple varieties from the owners' orchard across the way -- a bonus.

Advice for new travelers in the Berkshires: cell phone coverage can be spotty while traveling and it is well worth the effort to carefully review the directions and maps prior to travel...especially if you plan to arrive at night. The owners provide directions and also land line contact information prior to your arrival.

We hope to return to this property to take in the blossoming orchards in spring and Tanglewood performances during the summer! Thank you, George and Roberta, for an extraordinary visit.

Owner's Response: Sandy and Stan, it was a pleasure meeting you both, and we are glad you enjoyed your stay at our cottage here in New Marlborough. Your wonderful review is very greatly appreciated, and we are happy you feel the cottage and hiking trails and lakes in the surrounding Wildlife Sanctuary compare well with a beautiful farmhouse at a vineyard in Provence! We would love to have you visit us again.

GREAT BERKSHIRES GETAWAY

  • 5 of 5
My family and I have stayed at various places in the Berkshires over the years, and this part of New Marlborough is definitely one of our favorite spots. The prior review nicely describes the setting. We loved jogging and riding bikes along the shady paths and past nearby farms, and stargazing while listening to the creatures of the night. The cottage is basic and cozy but nicely laid out. We used the office as a second bedroom, though we brought a blowup bed with us. We definitely enjoyed the two kayaks, as it's very close to Thousand Acre Swamp and York Lake (the kayaks fit in the back of our Subaru wagon with the gate open, with rope to secure them). The location is close to nearby state forests, waterfalls and swimming holes, and it's also not far from Norfolk, CT and Great Barrington (and we agree that dinner at Southfield Store is great). The surrounding area is fantastic for cycling. Owners are wonderful and even let us pick berries from their yard (and our older daughter baked two pies!). We highly recommend if you're looking for a serene spot with easy access to Berkshires attractions.

Owner's Response: Kevin and Roseanne,

Thanks for your kind comments. We are flattered that you said our cottage is a favorite of yours, compared to other places you have stayed at in the Berkshires. We enjoyed meeting you and your nice family, and were pleased to see all of you taking part in the many activities available in the surrounding New Marlborough area, as well as the rest of Berkshires. Glad to see your daughters enjoying picking berries, and making pies.

Hope to see you all again.

PEACEFUL CONTRY RETREAT

  • 5 of 5
This cottage is located down a very pretty wooded country road, near a pond and marshes filled with birds. The house has a nice, airy feel and was very clean and well-maintained with a new bathroom and kitchen gear. I really appreciated the simple but comfortable style in which the owners, both artists, decorated the place. The owners were incredibly friendly and helpful, providing maps, information on local attractions, stores, hikes, driving directions, and suggestions for things to do and see (as well as grilling tips!). With the addition of a fold-out bed (kindly provided by the owners), the home office was easily converted into a bedroom for a five year-old. Nearby Kent Lake, circled by a nice woodsy trail, is a great place to swim (especially good for kids), the Southfield Store, also nearby, is a very good restaurant (and as a New Yorker I am spoiled), and very pretty Campbell Falls is a mere 5 minutes away; there were additional swimming spots nearby that I didn't get to investigate—maybe next time! If you're looking for a tranquil country getaway (in a house un-cluttered by gingham and faux country art), this is the place.

Owner's Response: Deb,
Thanks so much for the glowing review! You were the first person to stay at the cottage since we renovated it, and I'm glad you and your friends enjoyed it, as well as the Wildlife Sanctuary that surrounds it. It was a pleasure having you here and we really liked the way you enjoyed visiting the interesting towns, villages, cultural venues and restaurants we are fortunate to have nearby, but also really appreciated the beautiful Berkshire countryside, lakes, waterfalls, wildlife, nature hikes and scenic drives ( all that we find enriching about the Berkshires as well ).
Hope to have you here again soon!
