RELAX IN OUR HAWAIIAN-STYLE HOME IN BEAUTIFUL PUAKO!

Puako House Rental Photos and Description

2 Bedroom, 2 Bath Home That Is As Unique As Puako! (Sleeps 6)

Our two bedroom, two bath home is a perfect getaway for couples and families! Just 400 feet from the beach, and with a beautiful view of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, our house offers two sides of Hawaii, both the ocean and the mountains. Enjoy breakfast in the morning, watching sunrise over Mauna Kea on the wrap-around deck. Take a leisurely stroll to the beach, picnic and beach chairs in hand, and enjoy the warm Pacific waters. Snorkel in Puako Bay or at nearby Waialea Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in Hawaii. Swim with sea turtles, colorful fish, and perhaps even a moray eel! Afterward, relax in the screened-in lanai living space, while your meal is grilling out on the BBQ. And end your day by watching the spectacular sunset over the ocean before walking back to your Hawaiian escape.

E 'Aka 'Aka Mau House (aka Laugh Alot House) is uniquely set up to accommodate family and friends, but still afford privacy. The upstairs area has a spacious living room; the cathedral ceiling with two fans gives the space a light, airy feel. This same ambience carries over to the dining area, where koa trimmed windows and wooden floors show off the 'Hawaiian plantation' decor of the room. Open the large sliding glass doors and windows to allow in the breeze! Folding doors on the side of the bedroom allow our guests to expand the space into the dining area, but also affords privacy if desired. The galley kitchen is well equipped with everything necessary to prepare any kind of meal, from a Thanksgiving turkey to Hawaiian and Asian fare. Granite-topped counters and a large, shelved pantry provide the ideal space to create meals for family and friends. And a Char-Broil radiant heat propane grill is readily accessible on the deck, perfect for grilling that special Hawaiian dish!

Downstairs, a second bedroom with sitting area and separate bath lends a 'studio setting' feel to the unit, and is perfect for teenage children or when two couples rent the house. For extra guests and/or small children, there is a fold-out sofa sleeper in the upstairs living room as well as a pullout futon in the downstairs sitting area. Finally, the screened in lanai is set up as an additional living space, with a double bed futon for those wanting to sleep outdoors.

High definition TV, DVD player, iPod dock, and a variety of movies and books are available to our guests. A full-sized washer and dryer are also on the premises for your use.

Our goal is to make E 'Aka 'Aka Mau House your home away from home - a place to relax, enjoy your surroundings, and laugh alot - with family and friends!

We have enjoyed coming to Hawaii over the past few years, and have particularly enjoyed the unique community of Puako. It's a great place for family and friends. We feel at home here in Hawaii, and want to share that with others who visit this amazing paradise.

Marjie purchased this house in 2013

Puako is a very special place. It is a unique community blending full-time residents, retirees, and short and long term renters. Quiet, peaceful, and beautiful, it is reminiscent of what Hawaii was like fifty years ago. Some of the best snorkeling is available literally within a stone's throw of our home. However, we are close to other activities - including Mauna Lani Resort for golf or to enjoy a nice dinner out, to Hawi and the Kohala Peninsula to visit galleries, whale watch, and swim, and to Waimea for its farmer's market, restaurants and unique Hawaiian Cowboy culture!

Paradise in Puako

We had a great time at this lovely home. The home is comfortable, tastefully furnished, and includes great views. And did I mention the house is very near some of the best shore diving and snorkeling we have ever experienced? If you are a diver, and here during the summer (or whenever the seas are calm), don’t pay for a boat dive. Instead, go to end-of-the road (to the left leaving the house), or site 38 (near house number 38, to the right leaving the house), and dive the same spots the boats would take you to, for much less money. We rented our tanks from Kohala Divers, and they can give you more info, but rest assured access is easy and the diving is great! You'll need to drive to these access points (if you are bringing tanks) but they are close, and parking is always available.
Marjie was great, and very responsive to our requests and needs. We cooked most of our meals at home, but if you want a great fish meal (cooked by someone else), check out the food truck near Kohala Divers….which is also right next door to a great fresh fish market.
We traveled the island, as we were here for almost 3 weeks, but on our next trip, we plan on staying closer to home, as the area has much to offer. The nearby beaches are world class! We will be back!

E 'Aka 'Aka Mau - Our new 'home away from home'

E 'Aka 'Aka Mau - Our new 'home away from home'

We had a wonderful, relaxing time at your place!! We have stayed on the ocean side for the past nine years and when the place was sold, we looked for another place to vacate. We thought we would miss the ocean views but quite honestly, the views of Mauna Kea were spectacular - hour by hour - changing constantly to delight the senses.

There were four adults that called the place home and there was a room that met the needs of each person. The patio was a delightful place to sleep at night if you enjoy the cool evening breezes, the king bed in the downstairs suite was a dream to fall into each night and the upstairs, well, again Mauna Kea didn't disappoint!! From the supplies in the kitchen, the pantry, the utensils, the dishwasher, washer/dryer, the BBQ to the snorkels/fins/water toys & tons of beach towels available - you couldn't ask for more!

It truly felt like we were in our 'home away from home' from the minute we walked in. We will definitely be back next year! (same time next year!!)

Oh...and of course, Marjie and Glenn were so responsive & helpful if we had any questions.

Out Best Time in Puako Paradise

  • 5 of 5
This was our fifth time renting in the Puako community and is the best rental for our extended family. Our "grand-neighbors" joined us for one of our two weeks; introducing an adventuresome family to Hawaii. Whales, turtles, flowers, quiet, music, beaches, sunsets, stars, snorkeling, hikes... Puako has it all nearby.
The house was perfect for two small families, the ground floor has a separate entrance, plus the screened in area - with a small frig. The house was very clean and prepared for our arrival. The tubs of ocean equipment and the boogie boards are a great bonus.
Cafe Pesto has great food, they will sell pizza dough balls; we baked pizza on the gas grill.

Wonderful accommodations in Hawaii

  • 5 of 5
We had a marvelous time at the Puako house. The location was superb and made short trips very easy to do. The physical accommodations were beyond anything we expected: full kitchen, well stocked pantry, etc. I want to thank the owners for all the extras that made the house a true home away from home.

The directions were perfect.
All the keys worked exactly as described.
The interior is thoughtful and beautiful - we put a sand towel at the door and wore socks in honor of the spectacular wood floors!
The laundry facilities were greatly appreciated and spotless. (And had laundry soap available!)
The water toys were a lot of fun, especially the boogie boards. Thank you for making them available.
The grills were a particular treat, especially the Weber, which matched my own from home! No learning curve!

Yours was the last place we stayed and definitely ended our vacation on a high note.

Christmas in Puako

  • 5 of 5
We loved this house!!! There were four in our party including a 16-month old baby.
The house was extremely clean, had a well-equipped kitchen, outside barbecue, and an extraordinary view of Mauna Kea. I would wake up early and watch the sun rise over the mountain each morning. There's a stunning beach just across the street from the house with tide pools and sea turtles. Every day we would make sure we were home before sunset to walk to the beach and splash around in the tide pools with our baby. There are also exceptionally good swimming beaches nearby. The house is located in a quiet residential area (away from the big resorts), and it was exactly what we were looking for. We would definitely stay here again in the future.

Puako Beach is the only non-gated community on the Kohala Coast. Unlike when visiting a resort, the visitor to Puako Beach gets the 'real feel' of living in a small Hawaiian town, complete with a multipurpose general store, local area churches, and local area events. Beautiful beaches are easily accessible within a few minutes walk. Yet Puako is close enough to larger towns and resort areas for people wishing to play golf, eat out, or visit art galleries.
