Welcome to El Oso (The Bear), kick off your hiking boots or your snow shoes and relax to the sounds of the forest while rocking on the porch and enjoying the fresh mountain air or curling up by the large stone fireplace. El Oso provides a rustic, yet very comfortable week in the woods. Your privacy is ensured while you're within a stone's thrown of all kinds of excitement. Enjoy white water rafting, world class zip lining, horse back riding (stables nearby!), more hiking trails than one could count, fishing, swimming, biking, and tennis. The list is a long one. With all the amenities of home, we apologize, you're gonna have a tough time telling your friends you were roughing it! Be sure to book early for the spring and summer seasons! Pets are always welcome!
During your El Oso vacation, you'll be treated to many memorable activities. Ski the Wolf in winter months (20 minute walk to base of slopes), go winter tubing, hike a snow covered Appalachian Trail, or cross country ski from the cabin's front door. Make S'mores in the huge stone fireplace, then drum up some friendly competition with El Oso's plethora of family games, including a full poker set, a professional dartboard, numerous board games, Mario Cart on the Nintendo64, ping pong and foosball tables. A computer (iMac desktop) is available for internet access, and there's a comprehensive DVD library (kids and adults), cable TV, and a separate TV in the loft. A fully-equipped kitchen has everything you'll need to cook homestyle meals.
Outside, keep an eye out for deer, fox, rabbits, and groundhogs that frequent the woods surrounding El Oso. Spend your days exploring the Blue Ridge Mountains with a hike on the nature trail just up the road that connects to the Appalachian Trail, or to the top of Big Bald Mountain, where you'll find one of the most spectacular views on the East Coast (4 states can be seen from the peak!). The kids will love the outdoor adventures and mountain creeks, as well as swimming in the pool and playing on the playground at the Wolf Laurel “Village” just a ten minute walk from the front door. El Oso offers enough activities to keep everyone busy!
Guests can easily travel into Asheville's world renown art and music scene but also enjoy unique shopping as well as a multitude of fine dining opportunities. Mars Hill, a charming college town, is also a short drive away. Bring your discs because there are tournament quality Disc Golf Courses in both Asheville and Mars Hill.
*Four-wheel drive is recommended during the winter months due to the steep driveway but you can always park in the village and walk up to the cabin (10 minute walk). This Asheville vacation rental is located in Mars Hill and is approximately 30 minutes to downtown Asheville.

North Carolina natives, currently residing on the coast, but with a deep appreciation and love of our beautiful mountains and all the wonder that they have to offer. We searched pretty hard for the perfect location in Pisgah National Forest and by golly, we found it. As avid hikers with a penchant for anything and everything outdoors, El Oso also allows us to enjoy swimming, fishing, and horseback riding in the spring and summer, and snowboarding, skiing, snow tubing, hiking, cross country skiing in the winter. But these things alone are just within the Wolf Laurel community, just wait until you venture outside of it! El Oso (The Bear in Spanish) is named after our beloved dog Fisher (nicknamed Bear). She would have loved this home as much as we do!
It was a pretty easy decision actually. Asheville and all that it has to offer is so close, yet the Wolf Laurel gated community was still a mountain getaway: private, safe, with a potful of fun surrounding it. And you really can't go wrong in which season you decide to visit. Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall….El Oso has it all! The Appalachian Trail, heated pool, horseback riding, fishing, tennis, basketball, playground, etc.. There is also a lovely library to enjoy at the community center and many family fun activities within the village. Fall colors…good gracious yes. But in Winter, take a short walk from the front door of El Oso, to go skiing or snowboarding at 'The Wolf' (Then head up to the Ridge Lodge for spectacular views and a cup of hot chocolate or after a big day on the slopes ) No matter the season you can always relax in front of the stone fireplace on the rugged Aspen furniture, watch a movie, play foosball in the loft or just relax on the deck and enjoy listening to the stream and breathing the fresh mountain air.
We fell in love with this property for so many reasons. The cabin! A-frame with 2 bedrooms and a loft. Floor to ceiling windows that overlook the ski slopes and Bald Mountain. Stone fireplace, large deck, great kitchen and all the games you can think of. Location! So close to Asheville and Johnson City, Tennessee, and many more little towns in between that offer outdoor activities, shopping, the arts, great music, restaurants, history, etc. Amenities! Hiking, swimming, tennis, horseback riding, white water rafting, kayaking, zip lining, skiing, snowboarding, cross country skiing, snow tubing, and more.
