My husband and I live in New York City. We work in health care and love our time with family, friends. Owl's Rest is the perfect home for play and relaxation.. Our daughter was 10 when we realized we needed a place to rest and enjoy our love of antiquing, hiking, cycling, barbeque, swimming, kayaking, horseback riding and viewing foliage. My husband is from Napa and missed the beauty of the area. When we drove to the nearby town of Peterborough, we were hooked. This town has live theatre, the Peterborough Players and the actors circle as well as McDowell circle, the oldest artist retreat performed since 1933 having actors as James Whitmore and Sam Huntington. The Peterborough Historical Society lets you discover your past. The town was a model for the play OUR TOWN written by Thornton Wilder. The towns of Rindge and Jaffrey, Peterborough, Sharon, and Dublin all have incredible antique shops, a white-steepled church in Peterborough fronts the town green and the amazing oldest public library in the country. The Monadnock music festival offers music every July and August and the incredible Sharon Arts gallery (beats shopping for art and jewelry in NYC) is my favorite. My husband loves to cycle. There are 20 lakes in the area, 5 golfing ranges and is a perfect year around recreational playground. Peterborough has the best small hospital and is 15-20 minutes away by car. Everyones definition of a pretty town can differ, but we look for a sense of time passed by, a preservation of the past, and a very real present. The nearby towns of Hancock and Harrisville are ranked in the top ten in Yankee magazine for New Englands prettiest towns.

Kathleen Roche OWNER purchased this house in 1998

We first visited this property when our daughter Rachel's friend Rose invited us up for the summer. We were instantly hooked. We bicycled all over the area. The towns that are so very near is what sold us as well as our beautiful wrap around porch, house and neighbors. Harrisville, New Hampshire, a 16 mile bike ride from Rindge on Route 137 is perhaps my favorite of all. Here tidy brick buildings and a large granite mill are strung along the millstream that once powered a woolen mill. The buildings are fully restored, and there is the internationally known Harrisville Designs, makers of looms and yarns for handweavers and knitters. If you turn right at Harrisville Designs and cross the bridge, you’ll find a group of five millworkers’ houses called “Peanut Row.” Beyond these is Sunset Beach, the town’s private little beach and a nice spot for a picnic. Harrisville is the village most painted by artists (even more than Hancock) and is one of the oldest existing textile communities in the country, a National Historic Landmark village.I can go on about the area but you have to experience it to love it

We fell in love with our large house in the woods with wraparound porch, filled with antiques and lovely art work. CLOSE TO HIKING MT MONADNOCK/LOVELY LAKE/KIMBALLS ICECREAM FARM/FRIENDLY FARM FOR YOUR KIDS AND PETERBOROUGH FOR 12 PINES FOOD AND LOCAL ARTISANS

LOVELY RESTFUL NEW HAMPSHIRE GETAWAY

  • 5 of 5
Can't say enough about the beauty of this house! It is a classic old vacation home with wide porches and beam board walls, open rafters and shady grounds. The pictureS on VRBO don't do justice to the tasteful furnishings. We spent lots of time of the front porch, watching the world go by, and on the screened porch for meals. The lake is clean and lovely - the beach is basically empty on weekdays. The house has a cozy and fully equipped kitchen and many spots to curl up with a book and chill out. It exceed our expectations!

My husband was disappointed with the WiFi connection ( as he wanted to stream European TV and watch the Tour de France!), but for me, the unconnected-ness added to the relaxation.

I hope we have the opportunity to visit again!

Owner's Response: Dear Andrea, What a wonderful review! You have perfectly described what we love about our home. Especially the beautiful lake and curling up with a good book. I am so sorry Wi Fi is unable to stream. I know it is easy to use email and google and other engines but streaming is hard. We have loads and loads of DVDs for that reason. It is such a rural setting it is impossible to have that work but we'll keep on trying. Please send our apologies to your husband

Thank you Kathy and Jack

WONDERFUL HOUSE!

  • 5 of 5
We had the best time sitting on the front porch with a glass of wine, playing ping-pong, going to the lake to fish or swim or taking the kayak to the island. The whole family is looking forward to doing it again next summer!
Thank you Kathy for sharing this gem of a house! Magnificently decorated, well stock with all the essentials…really all you need to bring is your clothes and food.
Thanks for helping us create wonderful memories we will never forget!

A DELICIOUS PLACE!

  • 5 of 5
What a beautiful, restful, welcoming place! The lake is pristine, the sandy beach quiet & sunlit; the house itself, a very short walk away, is in a wooded glade, where the sunlight falls dappled through the trees. The wraparound porch has a ping pong table -- popular with young & old alike -- & is a great place to sit & read, even when the rain is bucketing down. There's a screened porch where you can watch the sun set while you dine al fresco -- & no mosquitoes! The house itself, decorated with enormous taste & care, is extremely comfortable & impeccably kept. It's at once full of character & charm, and yet ship-shape, with all amenities. Our generous hostess, Kathy, stopped by to make sure we were comfortable, bringing a lavender plant & a bottle of prosecco -- might this be paradise?

Owner's Response: How lovely. I am really touched. I've always wanted to be a designer as much as a health care provider. Wish I could have done both!!

SOUL NOURISHING

  • 5 of 5
As my husband and I anxiously stared at our navigation we kept passing the beautiful red house with the deep porches and big shaded yard, literally unable to believe we could be so lucky. A neighbor informed us that that was the place and my heart SANG! The interior is full of lovely textures and colors, great books, strange little antique instruments, interesting art and an the obvious love of an artistic eye. The master bedroom so peaceful and soft. It even smells great! AND it was immaculately clean. We have a ten month old who I did not worry about at all while he crawled around on the floors. The owner had even left us a delicious bottle of red wine.
The beach is just a tiny walk away, lovely. The bugs were also nearly non-existant. I'd stay there again in a heartbeat.

SIMPY A STUNNING HOME

  • 5 of 5
A Pottery Barn/Shabby Chic inspired Gem
We walked into the beautiful home on Evergreen and all of us said WOW!
The pictures here do not fully illustrate the beauty of this home
This house is tastefully decorated, yet has a welcome homey feel. We met the owners Kathy and Jack who immediately made us feel welcome in their summer home.
We enjoyed sitting on the quiet wrap around porch. We grilled every night and ate in the screened porch big enough for all 3 families to enjoy each others company.
We spent most of our time in the living room with the comfy oversized leather couches, and couldn’t stop looking around at all the many antique trinkets the art on the walls and the character of this home. Each bedroom had a theme and comfortable beds to rest from our long days at the baseball field at Franlin Pierce College . There was plenty for all the kids to do, (age range was 6-14) They had movies, games, books and the ping pong table was the biggest hit. The lake takes 2 seconds to get to and was amazing.
There are not enough words to describe this summer home. We truly feel we were lucky to find such a wonderful home to spend a few days together and wish we could have stayed longer.
When you step into this home you feel like youve just stepped iinto the pages of Shabby Chic/Pottery Barn Catalog, Kathy has put tremendous effort into making this home someplace you will want to come back year after year.
Simply a stunning home.
