Since being built in 1880 numerous Senators, Congressmen, artists, and academics have all resided at what is now Hill Flats.
The building was previously used as a lecture hall and residence for scholars conducting research at the Library of Congress which is across the street.
Due to the buildings immediate proximity to national monuments, the National Park Service and Washington DC has designated Hill Flats a Historic building and has registered it under the Capitol Overlay and Fine Arts District. This designation ensures that all preservation is conducted under the direction of the Architect of the Capitol.
Hill Flats has been meticulously preserved while ensuring that it meets modern comforts.
If you are looking for character and historic charm there is no substitute.
Incredible architecture and historic charm in an unbeatable location.
Great apartment for a couple or two singles in easy walking distance of the Capitol, Supreme Court, Library of Congress, and most Smithsonian Museums. This flat was in a historic building located on a quiet, tree-shaded residential street facing the back of the Adams Library of Congress building. It was an older home with a brand new kitchen and bath. We had a chance to tour most of the DC tourist sites, yet also experience a little local flavor by staying in the Capitol Hill residential area. One morning we followed a bike rider commuting (with child seat folded down in the back) to the Folger's Shakespeare Library. A car was not necessary as we walked, used the Trolley tour service one day, and a few times caught a taxi or called Uber.
This flat is also located only two blocks away from a 3-4 block strip of interesting and diverse local restaurants, most moderately priced. We walked to a local market when we arrived to pick up cereal and milk for breakfast, but every other meal we ate nearby was great.
As first time visitors to DC, we found this apartment to be perfectly located. We spent most of our time in and around the Mall, so it was extremely convenient to be able to stroll back home after a couple of long days sightseeing on foot.
It is also in a very smart area with plenty of local colour and a great selection of neighbourhood bars and restaurants within 5 to 10 minutes walk.
The apartment itself is in a very traditional brownstone building, full of character with a very interesting and quirky (in a good way) internal layout.
The kitchen is very modern with just about everything you are likely to need.
In the Capitol there are models of the Capitol itself and the surrounding area through the decades and into the 19th century - and it is nice that the building you are living in features in the model among all this history.
I would recommend this apartment to anyone visiting DC.
Great location, very clean, responsive owner. Would definitely recommend it!
The condo is located on the second floor of a Victorian home located just three blocks from the Library of Congress. Like most older homes, it has a few quirks. The electrical fuse box flipped a switch repeatedly. The bathroom door didn't latch properly and didn't contain a lock of any kind. The washer and dryer are in a dusty old basement. Still, the owner/manager was readily available by phone to answer questions, the amenities included a lovely remodeled kitchen, and the location could not be better. We would absolutely recommend it to friends.
My husband and I stayed here on our honeymoon. We loved it. The location could not have been any better. We could walk to most anything and the metro stop wasn't too far away. We ended up taking the metro to a Safeway to get some food items--the corner grocery store didn't quite cut it for us. The unit was exactly how it appeared in pictures and was very clean. The building and neighborhood were very quiet. It was an unforgettable trip and we would stay here again in a heartbeat.
Great location-able to walk to metro, Capitol Office Building, restaurants, etc.
Used sofa bed and it was best one I've ever slept in. Good size for 2 adults and 2 children. A little short on bowls (only2). Would definitely recommend
