About Dawn Zuill

The owners of Turtle Cottage are Bermudians whose families have called Bermuda home for generations. They bought Sunset Lodge apartments ten years ago, aware of its history as one of Bermuda's best known small hotels before it was converted into apartments. Now they are thrilled to be offering it to Bermuda's visitors again and look forward to welcoming you to their beautiful island home.

Dawn Zuill purchased this cottage in 2002

Why Dawn Zuill chose Bermuda

Sunset Lodge is located in Bermuda's central parish of Pembroke, meaning it is close to the island's capital of Hamilton, but far enough away to be a relaxing and peaceful haven for those who want a place to kick back. It is close to Admiralty House Park, once the headquarters of the Royal Navy in Bermuda, but now a beautiful park, at the centre of which is scenic Clarence Cove, one of the North Shore's prettiest beaches. Sunset Lodge was once a favorite destination for entertainers and musicians performing in Bermuda and also boasted a well known nightclub.

What makes this cottage unique

Turtle Cottage is the perfect getaway for families and groups of friends wanting an affordable vacation in Bermuda with the option of eating in or out. Tastefully decorated, this apartment has two spacious bedrooms, a large living room with pull-out couch, a spacious kitchen and dining area, a private garden and separate patio with views of the North Shore. For the business visitor, Turtle Cottage is a cost effective place to stay close to Hamilton, Bermuda's bustling commercial center. Air conditioned with Cable TV. There is a laundry facility on site.

Sunset Lodge appears to be run by genial dilettantes as a hobby.

We were told that it was a "12 minute walk to the yacht club" (downtown Hamilton) - it's more than 30 minutes and dangerous where there isn't a sidewalk.

They advertise that they are "Centrally located" - maybe - but they are not "conveniently located." Options for getting around include renting a scooter, bus, or taxi.

Google "scooter accidents Bermuda." Without the scooter option, you may feel stranded with no opportunity for spontaneity.

The bus' schedule reduces its convenience.

At $15 w/ tip one way, add $30 if you go out to dinner or get a drink.
Kelly picked us up, but her schedule didn't allow for a trip to the grocery store. Our first impression of Sunset Lodge included plywood sheets blocking the defunct office (no one on premises for assistance), rusted pipes, uncut grass, and empty flower pots. We all needed to do laundry but had no detergent or quarters. Kelly called Bill, and he arrived with supplies. They were both eager to solve whatever problems arose.

The bathroom sink didn't drain, and after plunging it, I could see that it wasn't a new problem.

The shower was a dribble - most of the water escaped through the wobbly faucet, and there was no soap.

TV said "No Signal."

The washer/dryer worked well, but a rusty, non-functioning washer in the corner added to the impression of neglect.

The advertised "ocean view" must be from the parking lot.

Nothing is left in the apartments by former guests - no detergent, no spices, no unopened bottle of water, nothing. Before we left, we gave our extra items to other renters. In fairness, the welcome letter states that supplies in the rooms are limited to hand soap, salt and pepper.

The security deposit took 17 days to be returned.

After we had paid, we learned that "For drinking water, we suggest you buy bottled water from the grocery store, in Bermuda we drink water straight from our taps, however as it is an apartment building, the water is not as clean."

I'm not sure what one should expect for an apartment in Bermuda, but I don't think that it is too much to expect clean drinking water, cut grass, properly functioning bathroom fixtures, and a working TV. Bill appreciated my telling him of some of the issues and assured me that they would be corrected, but it shouldn't be a "guest's" responsibility to provide the owner with a punch list of needed repairs.

Bill - provide clean water, spruce up the place, and correct that "12 minute" fiction.

Second Time @ Turtle Cottage

  • 4 of 5
Our friends and I stayed at Turtle Cottage in the summer of 2013 and 2014. We enjoy this area of Bermuda because it's only a 10 min scooter ride from Hamilton. You're amongst the locals. There are a few places to go swimming and snorkeling near the house. The pool area could be maintained a little more, but it serves its purpose. There is a small grocery store that is a 10-15 min walk from the house near Spanish Point. The views are amazing!!
We were surprised to see that some things had been updated since our 2013 stay. There were more towels, the bedding was new, the bathrooms had some toiletries, and there was a phone to make local calls.
Things that could be improved:
1. Cleanliness of the apartment - bathroom floors were very dirty when we arrived, cabinets need to be cleaned out, ant traps need to be placed around the apartment (ants were in the bed)
2. Wifi is spotty inside the apartment

Owner's Response: We are always grateful for responses and were glad to see that our guests had noticed the improvements we had made to Turtle Cottage since they first stayed with us in 2013.
With regard to other areas for improvement, we are in the process of improving the wi-fi right now.
Bermuda does have a strong insect population and no one can guarantee getting rid of all of them, but we will certainly do better on this going forward - thanks for letting us know that this did not meet our usual standards and we have also done a strong clean on the cabinets and will do better on the floors.
We hope to see you next year!

Turtle Cottage was exactly what we needed!

  • 5 of 5
Upon arriving in Hamilton and finding our accommodations that were previously booked for myself and a friend, were less than adequate, I jumped on vrbo and contacted the property owner for this cottage.
Firstly - I had a response within minutes (which was perfect considering I was on a SHORT time line!) Not only were we in the property within 2 hours, we were driven there by the owner with clean sheets and a gracious welcome! Bill was a fantastic host and I couldn't be more appreciative for his efforts.
The property has 2 spacious bedrooms with plenty of pillows and a very comfortable mattress. Each bedroom has it's own A/C unit which comes in handy when traveling with others, as well as an A/C unit in the living space. The tv and sat channel options were great and kept us occupied during the one night of rain we had. The kitchen, complete with blender, toaster oven, pots and pans of all sizes, plenty of dishes and cutlery, was perfect for making breakfasts, lunches and dinners at home. This space was the perfect distance from downtown Hamilton, involving a short bus ride into town. (The bus stop is a 3 minute walk from the front door.) It is a very safe area with 2 local shops around the corner for all your basic needs (water, snacks, cereal, alcohol, milk, eggs, etc)
I would love to stay in this property again the next time I visit Bermuda and will be in touch. Thanks again Bill (and Kelly) for your help! The place was perfect and we hope to see you again soon!

Needs a good refresh.

We were a family of 5 staying 4 days for Thanksgiving 2013

The place :
As said in other reviews, the place is out of the city, quiet, 15 mn from Hamilton with bus stop 2 mn from the house. This bus take you to the central bus station where you can take another bus to the rest of the Island. Off the beaten paths, but some may like to be on another line of bus, more central.
BTW You CAN'T consider hiking on the island because there is generally no sidewalks and roads are very narrow. Bus, Taxi or Scooter rental.

You have a great view on the sea from around the cottage, but no access to the beach.

The house :
Probably the house was a really nice place some months (years) ago. The decoration is nice, the 2 beds are alright, ...
But we had the surprise to find a place not completely cleaned and working :
- you don't want to open the kitchen closets, the dishes and silverware had to be cleaned before use, some napkins used as decoration on a high table were disgusting , ...
- The fridge is rusty,
- The coffee machine/pot had probably disappeared since last review.
- One of the shower was not working, the other one barely... but bathroom were clean.
- Beds smell and are humid (which is usual on a island), but if you are a little sensible to odors...
- The bed couch was broken and I had to fix it before we can sleep in.
- The pool (especially around the pool) is not finished, water was full of leaves, ...

An we also had good surprises :
- The lady (Isabella ?) who picked us up at the airport was so nice, took us to the supermarket, did whatever she could to help.
- The Bermudians are very persons, the Island is beautiful, full of History, ...

We know that prices are very high in Bermuda, but it's actually not worth the money we spent.
Before considering renting this cottage, be sure that it has a full renovation !

Like staying at a Summer Home

  • 5 of 5
Seashell Cottages is a little off the beaten path, but comes with some Huge plusses. Turtle Cottage had 2BR/2BA, walk-in-closets, a full kitchen, living/dining room, almost 1000 square feet of space, AC units, an outside patio, a backyard, pool, and laundry facilities, wireless access and cable TV.
This place was perfect for our 2 kids (7 & 9)! They had their own room, and enough space to run around outside taking pictures, or watching TV. Both loved jumping in the pool for 15-30 minutes after coming home from the day’s excursion.
The location is a bit off the beaten path but the bus into Hamilton stops right across the street and the ride is only 10-15-minutes. On Sundays and evenings, the buses don't run as regularly, so we took taxis for a cost between $8-$10 and a quick 5 minute ride.
Another advantage - Admiralty Park is only an 8 minute walk away and has a well-protected cove for swimming and lots of fish. On the other side of the cove, there was a little cave system that leads down to the water and is great for snorkeling (bring your own gear). As a bonus, there is a staircase right next to the bus stop that leads down to yet another cove where catamaran cruises anchor so tourists can go snorkeling.
If you don't mind not being in the middle of everything or right on the beach, this is a great place to stay. The property is well maintained, but looks like it could use a good power-washing. But honestly, the cottage is so fantastic it’s easy to overlook this. We also bought food and cooked breakfast and some dinners and this place was perfect for that. The kitchen was fully stocked with pots, pans, dishes, and silverware. The only thing we could have used was a coffee pot, which it did not have, but it did have an electric tea kettle. The on-demand water heating systems worked well in the Bathrooms, but we had trouble with the one under the kitchen sink – the water never got warm.
The apartment was tastefully decorated with area rugs and art and we really felt like we were staying in a summer home rather than a hotel. We would definitely stay here again - it was perfect for us.
