Welcome to beautiful Cardiff by the Sea and to our lovely home, located just one mile from the beach. Enjoy the new outdoor patio living room on comfortable couches, relaxing to the sound of the water fountain and cozying up to the glass Fire Pit (gas). After a long day of sightseeing, soak in the In-Ground Spa and savor summer time drinks and grilled meals with the Stainless Steel Barbeque Station complete with Granite Counter Top. The garden is private and lush with mature landscaping.
Our 3,000 sq. ft. home has three carefully appointed bedrooms and three recently remodeled bathrooms. The Master Suite is sunny and roomy with a Sleep Number California King bed. A glass door opens onto the outdoor living area. The marble en-suite bathroom is bright with double skylights and has a double vanity with marble sculpted sinks. The shower has dual shower heads and an over sized Jacuzzi tub is perfect for long soaks. The floors have radiant heat.
The second bedroom has a hotel feel. The Queen Size mahogany bed has an organic cotton duvet and matching shams. The large dresser completes the room. The third bedroom has a Queen Size bed with a bright, fun look. These two bedrooms share an adjacent bathroom that has a ceramic tile floor, marble counters and a white porcelain bowl sink. The third bathroom has a pebble floor, onyx vanity and a tiger eye bowl sink. The shower is beautifully tiled with a recycled glass inset that matches the vanity. The fourth bedroom has a brand new fold out sofa bed that sleeps one.
The Newly Remodeled Kitchen boasts unique Granite Countertops with Stainless Steel appliances, including a Convection Oven, Gas Range and breakfast bar for morning coffee. Gather at the table in the breakfast room which is bright and airy, situated under three skylights. A gray scraped wood floor runs throughout the kitchen, hallways and part of the family room.
The kitchen and breakfast room open up to a large open concept family room. The family room has a 63” Plasma Flat Screen with surround sound, cable TV with premium channels (Apple TV movies are available as well). WiFi runs throughout the home. The large couches with chaise lounge comfortably seat big groups. Facing west, natural light pours into this room, while plantation shutters keep the light out when desired. A wood burning fireplace with granite surround completes the cozy feel of the room.
The romantic Asian-inspired dining room has a beautiful wood table that comfortably seats 8. The chandelier made in Morano Italy provides soft light. There is also a fireplace (gas) and the sliding glass door opens onto the patio living room.
Because of the ocean breezes, air conditioning is not necessary.
Our home sits in a quiet cul-de-sac with neighbors that look out for each other. Down the hill is a neighborhood gourmet market, a Starbucks coffee house and beach front restaurant row. Cardiff beaches provide the best surfing and paddle boarding. Cardiff is a close knit, laid back, eco-minded surfing community. This is where world famous surfer Rob Machado lives.
Old downtown Encinitas is a five-minute drive which is quaint and has a variety of restaurants, unusual shops and an old movie theater from the 1930s. To the south is the famous Del Mar Race Track, and more nearby beautiful shops and restaurants. Just a bit farther is the famous and ritzy community of La Jolla. The City of San Diego with its historic Gaslamp District is 30 minutes south of our house. Of course, the magical San Diego Zoo and Sea World are also 30 minutes south, and Safari Park is 30 minutes inland. To the east are beautiful mountains and country towns, and ten minutes to the north is Legoland and other beach towns. Los Angeles with Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm, and so much more, is 90 minutes to the north. We have brochures which highlight the various activities and sightseeing locations.
We have lived in our home for 35 years and take great pride in its beautiful interior and exterior. The home is immaculate with no clutter.
We were a family of 7 (including a toddler). To highlight the pluses and minuses:
- Everything was comfortable and clean.
- Loved the fireplace in the living room with large, comfortable couches.
- Internet access was fast.
- Great dining room table.
- The gift for us was a very nice touch.
- Firepit was fantastic and fun to use.
- Plenty of towels to use.
- Warm comfy beds
- Central air
- Wood for fireplace in living room (there is a gas fireplace as well in the dining room).
- Various blankets and throws for each bed
- Very nice master shower- double shower heads and heated floor for the master bathroom.
- Located less than 5 minutes from highway, so easy access. But in a very quiet neighborhood.
- Convection option for oven.
- Pack and Play was available, although we had brought our own portable crib.
Minuses: As a caveat, we made these issues known to the owners, and they have since resolved them.
- Jacuzzi had quite a few ants roaming on the edge, so it was difficult to enjoy. After contacting the owner after our stay, they have told me they have exterminated the ant problem.
-TV was just way too confusing to operate; instructions probably need to be updated- this, according to the owner, has been corrected.
- Dishwasher detergent did not work as expected (plastic case did not melt to release detergent) so had to hand wash dishes- this also has been corrected.
So there were some minor issues, but the overall experience of the stay largely outweighed any minor inconveniences we had. I have to say, the support we received from the owners was top notch. Any of the issues we brought up during our stay were quickly resolved, and the fact that they were willing to make changes to make our or any other family's future stay even better made a hugely positive impression on me. Thank you for a great stay!
My family and I stayed here over Christmas and it was amazing. The home was so beautiful. You could tell there was a lot of love put into it. All the bathrooms were upgraded. Master bathroom had heated tile floors and double head showers. There was so much room too. The backyard was gorgeous. We didn't take advantage of all there was to offer. The owners, Jean and Don, were so easy to work with and very friendly. When I originally asked if there was a pack 'n play we could use, they said no. But immediately after, emailed back saying yes. I presume they went and bought one which was so nice and immensely convenient. They even left an extremely nice welcome gift. I would recommend this house to anyone. The only thing that I would caution is those with small children will have to keep an eye on them. There are tons of decorations around and little hands find them very interesting. :) Thanks for such an amazing stay.
We really enjoyed our stay. We rented this house for 3 nights for our annual 5th grade girls reunion. It was the perfect place for us. The house was very nice and clean. We loved the furnishings and artwork. The owners left us flowers, wine, chocolates, and a card, which were really nice personal touches. The house was very easy to book. The beds were really comfortable and the linens were nice, the kitchen had all the amenities, etc. We enjoyed reading the info guide and it was useful in terms of turning on the TV, firepit, etc. We went to a couple of restaurants that were suggested in their guide. The house was in a residential neighborhood and was only a couple of miles to the beach and town of Cardiff. Encinitas is a charming town only a few miles away.
The best part of the house was the patio! It was perfect for our group. We played cards and hung out a lot back there. We used the spa every night. We all found it very relaxing.
We had someone who was really allergic to animals in our group. So I would not recommend this house if you are allergic. Also, it is not a vacation rental in that the house is not otherwise occupied. The owners do have personal things there and live in the house part-time. But that didn't bother us. All in all, I would give it TWO THUMBS UP.
My friends and I have used VRBO to book houses from Sonoma to Paris and have been blown away at the quality of the homes. This place was by far the most disappointing of all. As we were walking through the home when we arrived, we felt like the owners had just left...and left all of their belongings there. There was laundry hanging by the washer/dryer, food in the refrigerator and rotting fruit in a bowl on the counter. The pantry was FULL, to the point where we couldn't put things away that we had bought to use. All of the dishtowels were stained or dirty. We were told not to use any of the glassware in the china cabinet so we drank wine out of juice glasses. When we went to our rooms to settle in, we were greeted by sticky notes that told us we could use 1-2 drawers only. The rest were full of the owners belongings. The master suite had cobwebs in the corners and dust covering the lamps...the duvet cover was dirty and the bed was old enough to have peaks and valleys where the owners must sleep. It was unusually hot on our first day so we tried to turn on the AC...only to find out there was no AC in the house. While it's very unusual to need it in that area, we should have been aware that the house didn't have it.
The house itself was beautiful and has a lot of potential as a vacation home, but it felt like we were waiting for the owners to come back at any minute, and never felt like we could relax and enjoy our stay. It was only surface clean, you could tell it desperately needed a deep cleaning. If they would like to rent the home out to others, I'd recommend putting more effort into removing personal belongings. We clearly paid too much for what we received and left feeling very dissatisfied.
