Enjoy this newly renovated cottage on the Sturgeon River in the lower peninsula of beautiful northern Michigan! Come to play in the water or explore the area. We are close to Mackinac Island, Petoskey, Gaylord, Charlevoix and the Pigeon River Country Forest. The fish themed bedroom has 2 bunk beds (sleeps 4) or you'll find that a comfy queen futon in the large great room can sleep 2. The large bathroom has a tub/shower and the kitchen is fully equipped. Cuddle up by the gas log stove in the large window filled great room watching the river go by or sun yourselves on the large sunny patio, grill some burgers while you watch the glorious sunsets, and gaze at the stars in the huge sky while sitting around your bonfire. Like to fish? The Sturgeon River is a blue ribbon trout stream sporting rainbows, brookies, and those big elusive brown trout! Want to get wet? Go for a float trip on the fastest river in the lower peninsula. You can bring your own tubes, kayaks or canoes or arrange a trip with one of the local liveries. They will help you determine which stretch of the river is most suitable for your skill level. Want to bike or snowmobile? The North Central State Trail is only 1/4 of a mile away for easy access! This trail goes from Gaylord to the south up to Mackinaw City in the north and beyond! It's a hard packed limestone surface and runs along the river in this area and up to the north it runs parallel to beautiful Mullet Lake for several miles. You can even stop and go for a swim! If you prefer hiking, the Pigeon River Country Forest is just a few miles away and offers many trails including the Shingle Mill Pathway and you may see some of the huge elk in the largest elk herd east of the Mississippi.
We moved to this area in 1995 from Kalamazoo (SW Michigan) and absolutely love it here! We are avid kayakers and enjoy some bike riding and hiking as well. John fishes when he gets a chance and can teach an intro to fly fishing if you're interested. Rhonda loves gardening, hiking and bird watching.
Rhonda Smit purchased this cottage in 2012
Our primary residence is a log bed and breakfast on the west branch of the Sturgeon River. We kayaked by this little vacant home many times and then had the opportunity to purchase it in 2012. We love to fix up places and make them homey with that up north decor that makes everyone feel comfortable and relaxed. We live in the woods and really find this sunny meadow location just 40 feet from the river a refreshing change to our wooded setting. It's very relaxing to sit and hear the river and watch all the birds flitting along the river's edge and don't be surprised to see a Bald Eagle flying the river looking for his next meal!
The cottage is filled with windows so even when you're inside on a rainy or snowy day you can watch the river going by! On a cool day you can even curl up by the gas log stove and read a good book or play games at the huge hand made log table. Want to watch a move? You can do that too! Local television stations are available to catch up on the news or watch a game as well.
we rented the cottage for a week and are very happy we did! What a amazing cottage right on the river at the end of a dead end road with no neighbors in sight! ! The cottage is very nice and cozy with all amenities like your at home. We liked the fact that Wolverine is centrally located between Petoskey, Mackinaw City, & Roger's City. There is so much to do that you won't get bored. The price is excellent, way cheaper than a hotel or motel and nicer. John and Rhonda were by far the best hosts we have encountered on any of our vacations. They treated us like we were family and not customers. If your thinking of going to Wolverine or any of the surrounding areas, I would highly recommend rented this cottage, you will be extremely pleased!
My husband and I spent three nights in this cottage. It is beautiful inside and out. The inside is very clean and has tons of light. It is very creatively decorated and it gave us some ideas for our own home! The cottage looks even nicer inside than the pictures show. The landscaping is great. It is very remote (exactly what we were looking for) and gave us the feeling of camping (without all the work and dirt that goes with it). We had a great time using the binoculars that were provided as well as the croquet game. Sitting on the deck, watching the river, watching the birds, rabbits and even a beaver, was very peaceful. The view for the stars is amazing. Note: there are quite a few kayaks and tubes that go by, but the river is swift so they are not there long. Also, you can hear the traffic on I-75. I highly recommend this cabin for anyone. Bring your own tubes (we drove to the boat launch, floated back to the cabin, then walked back to the car, about a mile and a half) or rent tubes/kayaks/canoes just a short distance away. The owners are very nice and helpful with ideas of things to do in the area. We are looking forward to going again!
