A nice little apartment in the center of Varrena, viewing - on one side over the central plaza with its caffe and the children going to school and people meeting joyfully, and at the other side, at the picturesque little street across which there is a nice art gallery.
The apartment has everything needed for a comfortable stay and even a washing machine.
It is also convenient for handicapped people, as it has a chair that climbs the few stairs leading to it. Apart from all this, you have the nice friendly landlady , always at your service.
Not far from the apartment - one can go and enjoy the beautiful lake of Como and the beautiful roads around, leading to Lecco, Como, Milano, and so on.
Not far either are the Swiss alps, and everywhere - beautiful landscapes.
We had a lovely stay in Maddalena house in Varenna , the position is woncerful in Varenna center, we enjoyed visiting many of the towns and villas around Lake Como as well as Varenna itself , but we are so pleased we have chosen varenna. Maddalena house is a great place to stay, it has everything we need and it is very comfortable and spacious. We very much hope to come back again.
We really enjoyed our week in Villa Albertina. It is a very comfortable apartment on the first floor of a four storey villa built into the hillside, with lake views. Enzo and Antonella, the owners are very friendly and hospitable. They collected us from the ferry and invited us to use their garden on the next level, which had uninterrupted views of Lake Como and the snow capped Swiss mountains in the distance. Varenna is a great place to stay and it is very relaxing being able to walk everywhere. The walkway around the Lake with its restaurants is very pretty, as is the walk to Fuimelate, the climb to Castle Vescio with its falconry display, also Villa Monastero and Villa Cipresi gardens. We also enjoyed the ferry trips around Lake Como to Bellagio, Menagio, a number of villas and the ancient Monastery. In the late afternoon it was always relaxing to return to our apartment and walk up to the garden to take in the beautiful lake views.
We stayed in Casa Camilla the first week of a 5 ½ week trip to Europe, and it raised our expectations for the rest of the trip. Marilena is a great hostess, and she went out of her way to make us feel welcome. She drove us around the town to show us the location of places like the bakery, fish market, her residence, good restaurants, etc. Then she took us to the house and explained everything in detail. She provided us with a laptop so we could use the Internet flash drive (our IPad didn’t have that option), and she also gave us a cell phone to use during our week there! The apartment was very clean and spacious (I didn’t feel the need to wash dishes before using them). The views are just spectacular. Not only did we have a private parking place at the apartment; we also had a complimentary private parking space in the middle of Varenna! That made taking trips on the ferry to other towns very easy. We cooked nearly all of our own meals; the kitchen was very well equipped. Having a dish washer and a washing machine (and drying racks) was also a big plus. It is an easy walk to the bakery or into town from the apartment via a trail (a little uphill on the way back). This apartment (and Marilena as a hostess) gets a score of A++ from us! We hope to return again one day.
My wife and I stayed at Villa Albertina from April 24 through April 28, 2012. We wish we had more days to stay here before we headed to Milan. This is a lovely apartment in "downtown" Varenna. Enzo and Antonella - the owners - were wonderful to deal with throughout. They met us at the train station and drove us to the apt., took us in, and showed us everything. This clean, well-maintained apt. is the bottom floor of Enzo and Antonella's home. It sits up about 10 steps from the street and is nestled into the hillside. There are lake views from the living room/dining room, kitchen, and bedroom - all good-size rooms. Plenty of room for two adults. The bathroom was outside the bedroom and had a washing machine - after spending 6 weeks in Italy in VRBO apts., and using different kinds of washing machines - this one was easy to use. Connecting to the internet was easy. Kitchen was well-equipped. The owners invited us to visit their terraced gardens which went up and up the hillside - we went up everyday. Spectacular views of Lake Como! The mountains were still snow-capped which added to the dramatic views. Varenna is a very small town and you can walk everywhere. The passarella (the walkway) along the waterfront is an easy stroll in both directions. Plenty of restaurants: definitely go to Il Cavatappi Ristorante on Via XX Settembre (this Via is almost directly in front of the apt.). We had one of our best meals in all of Italy here. It is tiny (5 tables) and the food and wine are exquisite. Mario, the chef, and his server were memorable! We also had good pizza and wine at the Victoria Grill right on the town square. The walk to the ferry takes less than 10 minutes. We visited Bellagio - and spent the day walking the highways and byways. We visited Lenno and took the fast boat to Villa Balbianello - wow, what a place! The views from the ferry were magnificent. In Varenna, we hiked up to Castelllo di Vezio - awesome! Go up into the tower for incredible 360 views. We hiked to the Cimitero. We hiked up to the Sorgento di Fiumelatte and then further up. Beauty everywhere! On our last day, Enzo took us back to the train station for our ride back to Milan. Varenna was a perfect end to an incredible 6 weeks in Italy. Wonderful apt. Wonderful people. Wonderful food. Great gelato. Magnificent views of lake and mountains. A slow, relaxing pace. We will come back here. This place - and Villa Albertina - are magic.
My sister and I stayed in the Valentina House for a week with three teenagers. Marilena was absolutely fantastic in helping us book the apartment and answering all my questions regarding Varenna. Camilla was extremely helpful in meeting us at the train station and taking us to and from the apartment.
The apartment is perfectly located between the water and the town square in the historic part of Varenna. It does require walking up and down historic steps, but not too many. The teens spent a good deal of time on the balcony or at the cafes (especially Il Molo) on the water, giving them the freedom that they enjoyed. We were able to cook a couple of meals in the apartment, having purchased food at the grocery stores in the main square. The apartment is cozy, yet authentic. It is ideal for four people, but manageable for five. There is a pull-out cot in the main room.
The location in Varenna is perfect for visiting other towns on Lake Como via the ferry or train. We also went to Lugano Switzerland, via the bus from Menaggio. We had a truly wonderful and authentic experience, thanks to the ideal location and helpful owners.
We stayed for almost a week at the Camilla House in Fiumelatte - just outside Varenna. Marilena met us in the center of town and showed us our private garage and then our wonderful apartment. It was perfect for us. The views are magnificent and I wish we could have stayed longer. Marilena was wonderful about giving us tips - where to eat and not to eat, the local fisherman from whom to buy, ferry information, etc. The apartment was perfect and had everything we needed. We often walked into town - not ideal for those who don't like to walk - or drive to our private garage. We loved staying in Varenna as the view is awesome from this side of the lake. We plan to go back and stay in Camilla House. Marilena provides excellent advice on where to get groceries, free wifi and a local cell phone! It just doesn't get any better than this.
From the medieval Castle Tower on the top of Vezio town above Varenna you can have a wonderful sight of the 3 branches of Lake Como.
The Villa Monastero with the abt 2 km long gardens and the the gardens of Villa Cipressi offer an unforgetable souvenir .
Ferry boats to many neighboring cities and villages (i, e, Como,Bellagio,Menaggio,Lenno,Piona Abbey,Lecco and so on)
