Meticulously remodeled to be the best vacation rental in the area, Otter's Den is wheel chair friendly with a chair lift in the garage and 3ft or wider doors throughout except in the guest hallway, bedroom and bath. 60 ft of dock space on a deep water canal means your boat is in your back yard ready to head for the Gulf, the springs, or even a waterfront restaurant. Most furniture and appliances are brand new including all beds (King in master bedroom, 2 twins that can be moved together in the guest bedroom.) Master bath area has a walk in closet, travertine (real stone) shower stall, and new toilet, sink, exhaust fan and light fixtures. Guest bath has tub, shower, and is newly tiled with all new fixtures as well. the kitchen and dining area sports a new dishwasher, electric stove with stainless hood, built in microwave, a huge walk-in pantry, double door refrigerator with ice maker and through the door water dispenser, toaster, blender, and quality flatware and service for 8. There is a 60 inch plasma TV in the living room, and LCD TV's in the bedrooms and kitchen. The home has vaulted ceilings and an 'open air' feel with lots of skylights and pocket doors that disappear into the walls leaving a vast open view of the spacious deck, the dock, the water and wildlife. A large 2 car garage and driveway should take car of your vehicles, but there is extra parking nearby for boat trailers and possibly an RV. Recreational amenities include 2 bicycles, a double kayak, a single kayak, canoe, 2 spinning rods with tackle for fishing off the dock. Serious anglers should bring their own gear. A four person 14ft Carolina Skiff with 2 bench seats, Bimini top and 9.9 hp Evinrude four stroke motor is available to qualified boaters for an additional fee. The house is on a private paved single lane road facing 3 acres of undeveloped deciduous woods. Most houses in this neighborhood are owned by weekenders who come 'up to the river' for fishing, boating, or just to relax.
While building our little pocket cruiser my wife and I decided finally to move to our favorite waterfront Florida getaway - Old Homosassa. We'd been visiting here and bringing friends for years and always dreamed of living here permanently. Now we do!
Terry Evans purchased this house in 2012
When another house in our quiet neighborhood became available, we bought it from the owner before it was ever listed on the market. The neighborhood is perfect, the house is well constructed and has always been well cared for, and the waterfront location is the best in the area. Had the house been available when we were shopping for ourselves, I'm sure we'd be living there now.
60 feet of dock space on a deep canal 1/2 mile from the Homosassa River, 3 miles from the Gulf of Mexico makes the house a boater's dream. The rear deck is huge, the back porch/family room, living room, kitchen and master bedroom all have great water views and north light without glare.
We stayed at this wonderful waterfront property last week. We hated to return back home. The house was immaculate, the bed was comfy. It was at the quiet end of a canal. It was well stocked with essentials. We were very impressed with the quality of the kitchenware, especially the knives. Most VRBO rentals we've done have lacked in that department. We rented the skiff with the property and the motor was a bit persnickety, but it allowed us to fish, see a manatee in the river, and get us to Macrae's and The Freezer. We would definitely recommend this property!
The home is as pretty as the pictures. It has a nice open floor plan that is bright and cheery, it's nicely furnished and decorated in fun colors. Found it to be the most well equipped home that we have rented. Everything was clean and well maintained. Great water views up the channel. Saw Manatees and dolphin right off the dock our first morning there. I would recommend visiting the Homosassa Wildlife Park and be sure to eat at The Freezer and at Neon Leon's, both are unique places to dine. Terry most certainly believes in great customer service from beginning to end...thanks again for the ride in the Patuka, what a great boat, and what a great ending to our stay. I most definitely recommend this property.
We loved this well-appointed, open plan, bright bungalow in a quiet neighborhood on the water. The home’s “classy holiday” decor shows an artist’s sure and clever hand – Jaki’s own. Each seating area is invitingly comfortable. It was a pleasure to work in the bright and well equipped kitchen. The large shade porch was perfect for hours of writing on a book, which my husband was hunkered down to do and the reason for our stay. When he needed a break, the kayaks, bikes and skiff were just the right antidotes. We kayaked through a culvert (Terry’s tip) for a shortcut to the marsh reserve and found ourselves in a watery wilderness of stillness and quiet. It was awesome. Other days we puttered with the skiff to the headwaters of the Homosassa River, and swam with the manatees with our snorkels, wetsuits and fins; amazing! We took the skiff all the way to the Gulf (our first time to see it ever) and came upon a pod of dolphins who entertained us with their antics. Terry thoughtfully provided us with water charts so we felt comfortable navigating the river by ourselves. We really enjoyed getting a feel for the Old Homosassa waterways and cottage life on the river. Finally, we collected our very own set of holiday dishware just like those at the house; a nice souvenir of our happy time at Otter’s Den.
We loved our stay in this beautiful home and wished we could have stayed longer. Not enough time to do everything we wanted but we did a lot. Be prepared to pick your jaw up off the floor once you enter this home. I would never get tired of looking at this amazing view out the wall of sliding glass doors. The house has everything you need and the furniture and beds are very comfortable. We kayaked, saw lots of wildlife, took the skiff to Blue Water and snorkeled with manatees, ate at the Freezer, twice. Wanted to bike but couldn't squeeze it in. I miss being there already! Terry and Jackie are such nice people and always very helpful with anything you need, recommendations for places to go, how to get there, where to eat and things to do. I would highly recommend this home to anyone.
My husband and I arrived and couldn't believe how beautiful the home is. The floor plan is very open and the view out to the water is awesome. There are all the comforts of home...and then some. It didn't take us long to figure out just how equipped the home is; if we forgot something, it was there! Our son and daughter-in-law arrived the next day and they loved the home so much they wanted to stay in and eat, instead of going to Neon Leon's!!! We can't say enough about the home, or the owners...both are amazing! We scalloped every day, swam in the spring, saw manatees, and enjoyed bbq-ing on the deck.
The dock is super nice and easily accommodated our 24' twin engine boat. Very easy and deep navigation to the river and plenty of trailer parking at the house.
Thanks Terry for everything!!! We really appreciate you allowing our short stay, on such short notice, and all your help upon our arrival. It was very nice to meet you and hope to see you again next year!
The home was just as beautiful as the pictures. Beds were so comfortable and everything we needed was here. The long view down the canal from the back deck was spectacular. We saw porpoises, otters, racoons, snakes, heron, mullet from the back deck. We enjoyed the use of the Carolina Skiff. Took it up to Blue water to go swim with the Manatees and almost to the gulf to go fishing and crabbing. Owner went a step further a bought crab traps for our daughters to use. Went bike riding throughout the Natural preserve. Visited the Crystal River parks and other beach accesses. Great vacation. Terry and Jackie were wonderful. Thanks for the ride on The Patuka Princess!
Old Homosassa is a picturesque old Florida fishing village located on a beautiful little river - 7 miles from the springs to the Gulf of Mexico. The house is on deep water Otter Creek, just off the main river, and only 1/2 mile from a state kayak park with an observation tower overlooking the Chasahowitzka wildlife reserve. A bicycle can get you anywhere, even off road into the reserve. Most popular activities are kayaking, fishing, boating, scalloping, snorkeling, and swimming in the spring's 'blue water.' It's one mile to MaCrae's waterfront bait house and bar and Nativie Sun tours offering air boat rides through the vast tributaries and backwaters, fishing and scalloping trips. The wildlife park is a must see. While they specialize in manatee rehabilitation, all the birds and animal species native to Florida are there. There's even an observation room sunken into the fresh water spring where you see multitudes of both fresh and salt water fish species swimming wild. A favorite activity is just sitting on the dock with or without a fishing rod. You can see manatees, dolphin, river otter, great blue herons, bald eagles, turtles, an occasional alligator and much more.
