San Diego House Rental Photos and Description

5 Bdrm w/ Pool & View, Great Location!!!

We purchased this custom craftsman (“arts and crafts” style) home in May 2013, because we loved its unique character, serene feel, and unobstructed eastern view. We have furnished it with top quality pieces and every amenity, paying close attention to details. In March 2015, we added solar PV to the roof and hope to cover 90% of the electric usage. A solar thermal system on the hill heats the pool.

Outdoor Area

The outdoor space features a solar heated pool with a cascading water feature and a large jacuzzi with amazingly powerful jets. There is a custom, built-in gas BBQ with a granite counter. We have a huge dining table with seating for 10, plus additional seating in a love seat, comfy chairs, lounge chairs, and hammock. The outside gas fire pit is perfect for smores. On the side of the yard are various fruit trees, including lemon, guava, clementine and kumquat. The unobstructed view stretches past the Cuyamaca Mountains to the desert.

Indoor Living Spaces

This property is unique in that it offers many living spaces, including two living/family rooms, a game room, a bedroom/living room, and seating at the kitchen island. All living spaces are tastefully decorated with solid wood, hand crafted 'arts and crafts' style pieces. All rooms (including bedrooms) have fabulous lighting, with dimmers so that you can adjust the light for the perfect atmosphere. The abundance of living spaces is a wonderful feature for extended family vacations, as the entire family will be able to spend time together, yet can also break into smaller groups in different spaces.

There are two separate living rooms, each with its own stone fireplace. One living room (the “Great Room”) has wood flooring, a high vaulted ceiling, a great leather U-shaped sectional, Noguchi glass coffee table, huge flat screen TV, solid cherry dining table with seating for 12 and caucasian rug. The other living room is smaller, with new carpeting, a microfiber couch, two leather chairs, and wood coffee table. The game room has a tournament sized (9’) pool table and a foosball table. The fifth bedroom is set up with a flat screen TV and a day bed that converts to a king bed, such that this room can be used as a bedroom and/or a living space. The large kitchen is equipped for a chef and is perfect for entertaining. It has custom cabinetry, granite countertops and stainless steel appliances. The stove includes not only four gas burners but also an indoor grill. Your chef will appreciate the Cuisinart food processor, Kitchen Aid mixer, real knives, pot filler, second bar area with sink, etc. To accommodate our family’s habit of spending time in the kitchen, we have comfortable leather counter-height chairs positioned on the bar side of the huge kitchen island.

This is a five bedroom home, with beds for 13 plus two air mattresses and a playard. We want our guests to sleep well, and do our best provide the ideal sleep environment. We have both light weight summer duvets and warm hungarian goose down duvets. We have over three dozen pillows in the house, from soft to firm, including goose down pillows. We even have a full body pillow.

Three of the bedrooms are upstairs; two are downstairs. The upstairs bedrooms have high vaulted ceilings and huge windows on two or three walls. This ensures tremendous natural lighting and a fabulous cross breeze.

The master bedroom is huge, 27’ long, with a view over the pool, past the mountains and to the desert. It features a king sized bed, full sized futon, flatscreen TV, and two seating areas, one with a Corbusier pony lounge chair, the other with Wassily black leather chairs and a gorgeous thick glass coffee table. The master bedroom has its own private bath, with jacuzzi tub, granite counters and two sinks, and separate toilet area. The walk-in closet is big enough for a bed, and has two air mattresses.

One of the upstairs bedrooms is furnished as a children’s room, with a twin over full bunk bed and small red sofa. There is no TV in the children’s room. The children's bedroom has a view to the front of the house, overlooking the water feature in the front yard. The other upstairs bedroom has a queen bed, a flatscreen TV, and a unobstructed easterly view over the pool.

Downstairs, there are two bedrooms. The front bedroom has built-in cabinets, and a cozy window window seat with fabulous cushions and pillows. Behind the queen bed, there is a custom designed, hand made head board that is nearly 8’ high. This front bedroom has a view of the water feature in the front of the house. The second downstairs bedroom backs onto the pool area, and has french doors that open onto the pool area. For a cross breeze, it also has a large window to the right of the bed. It has a daybed that converts to a king and a flatscreen TV.

The house has a variety of amenities, incl. solar heated pool, jacuzzi, outdoor gas BBQ, gas fire pit, two cascading water features, decent sized backyard, outdoor seating for 18, hammock chair, pool table, foosball table, many flatscreen TVs with cable and wifi, free wifi, tons of books (children’s books, cook books, novels, biographies, etc.), board games, children’s toys, doll’s crib and blanket, and beach toys (surf board, boogie boards, sand toys, etc.) We hope to have everything that you may want in a vacation home.

About Laura Colban

We purchased this home in May 2013. We have three children, including a high school senior honors student who works part-time at a day care facility and babysits.

Laura Colban purchased this house in 2013

Why Laura Colban chose San Diego

I find serenity at this home. When it is vacant, it is my refuge. After a hectic day (if we have no guests), I go over and sit by the pool and listen to the waterfall. It helps me find peace.

What makes this house unique

This is a gorgeous home with incredible character. American Craftsman (aka, 'arts and crafts') home, with stained glass windows, period lighting, etc. The house has a very serene, peaceful feel to it. Built in 1972, but renovated over the last few years. We have tremendous pride of ownership, and it shows in the designer furniture

Guestbook comments from the owner

Laura, Thanks so much for everything. We have rented homes nine times through VRBO and your house was the best so far!! The pool area was key!! Between the fire pit, jacuzzi, pool, BBQ and games, all three generations were happy and together. Really appreciated your activity recommendations and groupon links. My 92 year old mother had a blast paddleboarding with the little ones!! Thanks so much for everything.

Accommodations were ideal for our large family of 10 adults. The kitchen was perfect for preparing large meals. Appliances abounded and made life so easy. Two in our group use walkers to get around, and the two-steps to different levels on the main floor were not a problem. Pool table and foosball table were favorites, as was the hot tub. On nice days we visited Balboa Park and zoo. On the cloudy day we enjoyed the Old Town Trolley Tour. The walk to Soledad Mountain Cross was worthwhile. La Jolla is a lovely neighborhood.

Family Fun

  • 5 of 5

There were 11 of us for most of the stay, with 2 more surprise guests at the end. My son & grandsons live nearby, so most evenings there were 11-16 people and it never felt crowded. This house is perfect for entertaining large groups. We all sat around the large dining table to eat and play games. The kids ages 12-20, loved the pool table, and spent lots of time there, including multi-generation games. What fun it was to have kids, parents and grandparents together. The master bedroom was beautiful and enormous-what a treat!

The kitchen was well stocked for large groups. There were plenty of house and pool towels. The washer and dryer were great. Laura, the owner, is pleasant and very accommodating. The location was fantastic, close to all roads leading to popular sightseeing areas. I highly recommend San Diego Zoo, Midway Museum and nearby Seaport Village. There is a small super casual(paper plates) breakfast restaurant in Pacific Beach called Konos. You can eat outside over looking the beach. The food is fantastic. There is often a line, but it goes fast, and is worth the wait. Mt. Soledad Memorial is just blocks away. It is a must see for the moving tributes, and especially the view. Stop by La Jolla Cove to see the sea lions, and shop on Prospect St in La Jolla for great local made gifts. Loved this place and love San Diego!

Great place

  • 5 of 5

The house was perfect for our group, consisting of 7 adults and 2 children under 4. Plenty of space and everyone had a bedroom. Owner has really given thought to traveler needs, even sand toys for the little ones to take to the beach!! Kitchen had everything we needed to cook great family dinners and breakfast. The location was so convienent to the Zoo, Sea World, and several beaches. Shopping was easy and close by. We can't say enough good things about our stay, I would highly recommend this home to anyone wanting to go to the San Diego area. Home had new(er) washing and dryer which was very useful during our stay. Pool and spa were an added bonus. Home was spotlessly cleaned before we arrived. Everything was perfect, and we could not have asked for more. Loved it and we're thankful to have been given this chance to visit this part of the country. Thank you Laura for making your home our home for a week!

San Diego Wedding - Big Family!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed there last week and it was such a wonderful decision. The house is super convenient. About 5 minutes to I5, less than 10 minutes to the beaches in Pacific Beach, less than 15 minutes to La Jolla Cove, 10-15 to Mission Bay and about 20 downtown and to the airport.

The house itself is on a quiet residential street about 1/2 way up Soledad Mountain. It is not in an overly busy or touristy area, so it is a nice departure from Pacific Beach or La Jolla Cove. From Garnet street it is a quick, not-too-steep drive up Soledad Mountain road and then a turn onto the street. Once you turn onto the street you get a great view of the mountains. The house is very "homey." It has a really good layout and family vibe. There are 2 bedrooms downstairs and a full bathroom. There is also a small living room that is a good gathering point as you are heading out the door. There is a huge family room to the back left of the house that fits tons of people around the huge sectional couch or extra long dining room table. It has a really nice and functional kitchen. There is a big long island that we used for a buffet lunch, good appliances, plenty of cabinet storage and a nice accessible fridge. The backyard is an oasis. There is only a little patch of grass, but the rest of the backyard has a good-sized pool with a shallow and deep end, a hot tub, a fire pit and patio furniture. We had a great time sitting by the fire pit telling stories and roasting marshmallows.

The upstairs has 3 bedrooms. The master is very large and has a nice big bathroom. There is a average sized full bathroom in the hallway, and then 2 more bedrooms. and some sitting areas. The house does not have air conditioning, but it has plenty of windows and fans. If the front living room windows are open, and the patio door in the kitchen, it creates a nice cross-breeze.

The house doesn't feel that large, especially upstairs, but the common areas can accomodate a decent crowd. We had extended family over for lunch with about 17 people and there was plenty of room to mingle and escape the crowd if needed.

There is a pool table and fooseball table in the garage. The laundry is in the garage too and worked well. Plenty of towels, books, games for kids. Really an ideal house. :)

Overall it was a great stay, felt like home-wish it WAS home! :)-and fit our needs perfectly.

Thanks Laura!

Clean!! Spacious! And a beautiful pool!

  • 5 of 5

A weeks family vacation, grandpa and grandma, kids and grand kids! We all loved it! Very good location and so close to sea world, zoo, beach, mission bay and tons more. We spent some time at the house, cooking (kitchen was awesome and had everything), BBQing, and our favorite... Swimming in the pool! We used the game room and played pool, and 2 living rooms were so nice for relaxing and visiting. The bedrooms were very nice, plenty of room and closets. We felt at home! The owner was awesome to work with and very helpful. We would go back for sure!
