Spacious, Comfortable Modernized 4 Bedroom House, Sleeping For 8/10, Free Wi-fi

The Mill House is a beautiful stone house set in its own spacious garden in the rolling hills of the Scottish Borders. 45 minutes from Edinburgh (25 miles from the ring road) and next to the village of Stow, with coffee shop/gallery & post office. Near to Melrose & Galashiels for browsing and supermarkets, with Lauder and more local pubs and restaurants 5 minutes away, this is the ideal country get away both in high season and for weekend breaks.

The top floor has a large open plan kitchen, dining & sitting area with a huge glass wall & doors leading to the enclosed garden. It has four spacious bedrooms, 3 on the main sleeping level sharing 2 bathrooms, & a further bedroom on the main living level with its own en suite shower. The two kids' bedrooms with bunks are joined, so are great for family holidays.The property is recently converted & has an AGA as well as separate electric oven and hob, a mud room, utility area. We accept dogs! TV, DVD collection, iphone charger,books, stereo.

Local Farm Food : We can provide food for your holiday if you wish. On our farm we have Highland Beef, lamb, venison, oven ready pheasant, duck or partridge; and we make our own delicious sausages. Please let us know if you would like to pre-order food to be left in your fridge/freezer! We can also prepare food for your stay if you want to take a break from cooking during your holiday. For example, we can make lasagne, shepherd's pie, curries, etc. - almost anything you wish - including hampers for 'days out'.

If you are thinking of going out fishing, or booking local fishing through us you may wish to consider a daily hamper being made up for you and delivered each morning.

B&B catering can be arranged this way should you wish.

Catered Parties: We have a lovely, panelled and candlelit dining room to use for a private dinner function if you are celebrating a family birthday or anniversary. we have an excellent local caterer who will be happy to quote for your function -- easy and affordable, and a few hundred metres from your door.

Lyn does the catering and lives about two miles away. She caters for the functions that we hold here for an external club through the winter and we can attest that she is very good.

Walking, Golfing and Cycling: This area is brilliant for any of the above activities. You can walk out your door and link into numerous regional walks. There are fishing areas nearby, we can arrange fishing for you if you wish. There are numerous golf courses nearby as well. Please give us a ring for further information.

Lovely house but in need of some TLC

We stayed at The Mill House for a week holiday and family gathering at the weekend. The house is set in a farm so there is always somebody passing by. If you are looking to get away from everything maybe this is not your place. However is good for children as they are entertained by all the farm animals you can see around.
The house is very spacious, warm and with plenty room for two families with children. Our only negative comment would be the cleanliness as we thought the standards were quite basic for such a lovely house. The rug upstairs were covered in animal hairs and we needed to hoover it as soon as we arrived. The bathrooms didn't seem very clean and we found a really dirty toilet brush in the upstairs toilet that we had to put away. Some of the fittings around the house needed repair as the taps in the family bathroom and en suit shower. No tv remote. The dogs around the farm were also using the garden as a toilet and was soon covered by dog poo which is not ideal if you have children running around it.
We felt that for the price we paid and comparing the house to others we have stayed in the past all these details should be taken care of.
Owner's Response: I was really shocked to see this review and I am very sorry that the reviewer had a negative experience at the house. I have discussed this with the caretaker of the house who did say that the family who stayed at the house before had three dogs; I believe this was the cause of the dog hair and dog dirt in the garden, for which we apologize. We have never had anyone with three dogs stay at the property before, and perhaps this is not something we will repeat! I have been to the house and I could not find any problems with the taps, and there is a TV remote which was in the cupboard near the TV.

I dearly wish the reviewer had rung us or come to see us (we live at the other end of the farm) to say that they had some issues that they were not pleased with, and we would have remedied the situation immediately. I did see the reviewer walking their dog on the farm and did enquire about how their stay was going; everything seemed fine and I did not hear of any complaints.

We take great pride in this house and do our best to make it a pleasant and well looked after property. We are constantly trying to keep our standards high and improve where needed. We always try to make sure that renters are happy and well looked after. Again I can only apologize to this renter, and we will be more vigilant in future after dog owners have stayed at the property -- a problem we have not encountered before.

Lovely Farmyard Barn

We have just come back from a week away at Muirhouse Farm. 9 of us in total, 2 families with 5 children ( boys 10-17) and a dog. This was a perfect holiday home. Lots of space for us all to move around and a great location. The view from the lounge and downstairs double is amazing, seeing the sheep and cattle on the hillside from your bed whilst having a lazy morning was great. This property is actually in the farmyard so be prepared for some mud and countryside smells and the shock of a peacock in full plumage strutting his stuff on the lawn! Stow had nothing to offer - the local pub is being renovated - so we ventured out and fell in love with Melrose and the River Tweed 20 mins drive away. Great for eating out, walking, stunning scenery especially walking the river banks. We also enjoyed the Aga - when you haven't got one at home it's an interesting experience.
Wendy and Iver provided a warm welcome and live in the adjacent farmhouse but don't interfere with your stay. The sheep were brought in and sheared during our stay, a nice touch for the 'townies'! The property is isolated but being on the farm means the farm workers are regularly outside the garden - this didn't bother us but any dogs/children need to be kept under control.
We all loved the house, setting, and surrounding area. The house is rennovated to a good standard and was immaculate on our arrival. If we could improve anything we would have had more lounge seating. Not enough sofa space for 9 but this wasn't something we needed often.
We would love to go back, this was my first time in Scotland and the Borders area is a joy, beautiful. The driving is also a treat, good roads and no traffic.
This is a great property. You won't be disappointed.

The Mill House

My friends and I had a wonderful weekend at the Mill House, Stow in October this year.
The downstairs bedrooms with crisp linen and towels aplenty were the first rooms we saw, entering the cosy hallway and stepping onto the wonderfully warm flooring (a gift on an autumn morning!).  The open staircase took us upstairs to feel the invisible arms of a warm(not only from the Aga) welcome into the kitchen/livingroom.  The kitchen table was the perfect size for our games, 'family' meals and chatting over many cups of tea (from the whistling kettle).  The kitchen cupboards are well stocked with crockery, glasses, cutlery and cooking utensils, and the dishwasher was well used by our group.  The fridge/freezer accommodated all our drinks and food.  Comfy sofas, which also fold down into beds, surround the tv and dvd player.  The patio doors opened onto a lovely garden space, with seating and a bbq (perfect for a return visit in the summer!).  Although it was late autumn, we woke up to sunshine streaming into the House, and we were able to enjoy walks into the village.  I would definitely recommend the Mill House for a complete break - no need to pack linen or towels, just take yourselves

Would highly recommend this stunning mill conversion to those looking for a countryside retreat. Accommodation was perfect for our large group and facilities were excellent. The house was immaculate on our arrival with ample bedding, towels etc. We all thouroughly enjoyed our weekend and the tranquility the area offered. Customer service was excellent and all enquirys were responded to promptly. Perfect retreat which we will be sure to repeat soon! Thank you for a wonderful weekend.

We spent a wonderful weekend in this stunning house with old friends. The owners welcomed us and were most attentive to make sure we had everything we needed. The house is stunning, has everything you could wish for as well as the peace and tranquillity of country living but within easy walking distance of the local amenities, shops and cafes.
I particularly loved the aga stove and underfloor heating. A lovely cosy getaway!

Stow is located in the picturesque, rural and quiet area of the Scottish Borders. The Mill House is located up a private 1/2 mile drive at Muirhouse Farm. The farm has beautiful Highland Cows and sheep. The centre of Stow which has amenities is a 1/2 mile walk from the house. Melrose, a picturesque town with a rich history, is a 20 minute drive from Stow. Lauder, a lovely town with several restaurants and one of the 7 great castle of Scotland :- Thirlestane Castle, is a 5 minute drive. Galashiels has major shopping centres and is a 12 minute drive from Stow. Stow is 25 miles from Edinburgh.

There are many places to walk on the farm, and the Southern Upland way goes right past its eastern boundary. area. Mountain bikers can cycle at Glen Tress, Innerleithen which has one of the most famous mountain biking areas in the UK. There are numerous playgrounds in and around Stow for families with young children. There is something for every age in the area.

  • The Mill House has four bedrooms. One (Master ) large double bedroom ( with optional cot ) the room has an en suite shower room, an armchair and lots of drawers for your clothes. A second double bedroom, has a disabled access shower in it, also with armchair, bookshelves, etc. The property also has two bunk rooms. One has a double lower single upper bunk and the second with standard bunk beds. The double lower can be made into a sofa. There is an additional sofa bed in the living room. The beds will all be made up with lovely sheets and towels provided. Please let us know if you require all beds for your group. Books and games for all ages in rooms! The rooms are all spacious and have clothes storage and bookshelves.
