Eastsound Lodge Rental Photos and Description

3 Bedroom Historic Lodge, Right On The Water

Enjoy our dream! We recently purchased the historic Buckhorn lodge and we renovated it for the summer of 2013!

The 1930's building has a newly remodeled bathroom, new cedar paneling, a wood stove, kids sleeping loft, hot tub (with ocean view), bikes (Yes! you can ride to town in about 15 minutes - get out of your car!), kayaks, crab traps, private beach, ping pong table, BBQ, fire pit. Yes, it's rustic, but wonderfully comfortable and the perfect family retreat.

Don't spend your vacation driving to the beach. Our private beach is about 10 feet from our 40 foot deck (see photos) which runs the length of the front of the house. You can relax while keeping on eye on the kidsThe views are astounding - snow-covered Mt. Baker is visible to the North East, Vancouver is out past Sucia Island to the North West.

As noted, you can ride one of our bicycles or walk to to the town of East Sound to shop, eat at one of the wonderful restaurants, attend the weekly farmers market or just stroll. Because we are so close to the beach, it feels as if you were on your own private island. We have a few neighbors all of whom are wonderful kind people.

We do not have TV or a land line, but offer wireless internet, a VCR and DVD player with approximately 50 movies to choose from.

There are two private bedrooms with queen beds, a fold out twin mattress for the living room and a kids' sleeping loft with cots and fold-out beds which sleeps 4-6. There is also a four person tent that you can set up on the lawn and put the fold-out matresses in. Buckhorn Lodge is a one-of-a-kind spot - close to town, right on the water, incredible views on beautiful Orcas Island.

Our home offers great value: in addition to its superb beachfront location, the cost of renting a bike on orcas for a single day is $115. Kayaks rent for $25.00 an hour. Those two amenities alone add over a $1,000 in value with just a few days of use!

We look forward to providing you with a great island vacation.

About Larry Bearg

Larry is an entrepreneur who now enjoys helping others start businesses. Michelle is an organic gardener and landscaper. We have four young adult children in various stages of leaving home.

Larry Bearg purchased this lodge in 2012

Why Larry Bearg chose Eastsound

The San Juan Islands are one of the most beautiful and pristine places in the lower 48 states - here you will find bald eagles, Orca whales, salmon, spectacularly long sunsets in an ocean environment you can enjoy. Orcas Island offers the perfect balance of natural beauty and the amenities of culture that we so enjoy - great restaurants, fascinating and friendly people, theatre, and many outdoor activities.

What makes this lodge unique

With all of the recent laws limiting home sites far back from the water line, no cutting down trees, etc., Buckhorn Lodge was unique in its history and amazing location - literally 15 feet from the water, unobstructed views that are breathtaking, and close enough to town so we don't have to drive. The perfect combination of connection to the ocean and connection to town life that we have always wished for.

Great family retreat - especially summer, but winter has its own charm!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I just spent a WONDERFUL week at Buckhorn to celebrate my 60th birthday and Thanksgiving w/ our 2 grown kids and their spouses. It was a lovely, rustic adventure. The main value for the money here, I think, is location, location, location! And space for larger group and GREAT kitchen! With a perfect mixture of chilly, rainy, blustery days to hunker down with books and games and music and each other, and a few mild semi-sunny ones to bike ride, hike and explore the beaches and nearby town and art galleries/theater, it provided the kind of relax, renew and reconnect time we all craved. Though the main fireplace doesn't work, the little woodstove in the kitchen provided the cozy gather-round the fire experience, and space heaters did fine in the main living area and bedrooms. Do either negotiate or bring lots of firewood, though, if in winter! It would've been mighty chilly/expensive to buy on Orcas if we'd not brought lots with us. Though the lodge has that "mild island mustiness" that warranted slightly opened windows for sleeping - (I mention it because I'm allergic to that kind of stuff, and will often rule out potential places because of possible mustiness) - it was not an issue at all with just a bit of fresh air. And probably a TOTAL non-issue in summer! Definitely a "down-home" kind of place, but indeed cozy, and historically charming. The neighbors and island folk we met felt like instant old friends. Summers here must be amazing, with an even greater benefit of the many oceanfront features (kayaks, views, porch, hikes, bikes, pingpong, etc etc) mentioned in the write-up. Larry was great, responsive, and fun to deal with. Their zany family photo that adorns the wall was great fun to view... and to create our own family's version thereof! :-) "The Red Card Game" was also a hit - it helped instigate some great family discussions that were a large part of what made our time at Buckhorn memorable on many levels. Thanks, Larry, et al!

Perfect spot, well-appointed home, a bunch of toys, ready for your large group to eat and play.

We just returned from a long weekend at Buckhorn Lodge. This particular trip was just my husband and I. We go to Orcas every year for an anniversary getaway. We loved the comfortable, mellow, relaxing vibe. It was just perfect for the two of us. I can see returning next summer with our two kids (2 and 10).

I'm a bit of a "kitchen sink" packer, but it was unnecessary for this place. From things to do (ping pong, kayaking, biking, badminton, bubbles, fire pit, hammock, porch swing, and even dress-up), to generous high-quality linens, to a very well-appointed kitchen (my husband was thrilled to find cast iron pots), this place had everything we needed for a great weekend.

We found the beds comfy with nice flannel sheets and a toasty comforter. Thick curtains kept the blinding sunrise out of the bedroom, though I'm not sure the thin linen ones in the map bedroom would be as useful. I peeked at the beds on the loft - great for tweens or teens. My 10 year old would love it, but her 2 year old sister would be sent to the other bedroom because she's not quite ready for the loft ladder.

This place is set up for a passel of people that like to sit together, talk, play games, or dig into a book. The large dining table could easily seat 8-10. And the kitchen can easily handle a Thanksgiving feast. Lots of scenic, comfy places to curl up! Our favorite was the porch swing.

We loved our stay here and look forward to another visit.

Charm and fantastic location

  • 5 of 5

The lodge structure dates from the 1920's but the remodeling and updating is very good. The kitchen is very well equipped and the place has a warm, mellow, inviting character. The location is absolutely glorious, knockout view of Mt Baker, you won't find a more scenic location on the island. There is badminton, Ping-Pong, Easy access to the beach only steps away, Kayaks, row boat and you can paddle over to the marine state park on Matias island in less than an hour.

Fun for All

  • 5 of 5

Everything at Buckhorn Lodge lived up to the description on the internet. My four grandsons had a great time with the kayaks, ping pong, and fire pit. I enjoyed watching my family enjoy themselves. We were able to get around the island easily and enjoy some of the offerings of East Sound, Rosario Resort, and Moran State Park. My son and his family had come from Phoenix so really enjoyed the weather. My daughter had a relaxing time away from her job in Seattle and three of the four cousins rebonded with games. VCR collection is excellent and space is large and accommodating. Really enjoyed the views and kayaking. Thanks for letting us share your wonderful spot on Orcas. Marilyn Nickelsburg

Magical week on Orcas Island

  • 5 of 5

Wow! I can't say enough wonderful things about Buckhorn Lodge and the owner, Larry. The lodge was the most perfect setting and we used the kayaks twice a day. Hiking in Moran State Park, horseback riding and whale watching (Orcas Express) are musts! We did take two leisurely days to just enjoy the cabin kayaking and using the fire pit. There was a harbor seal that swam around the kayaks with us and my kids loved seeing Bob, the resident bald eagle.

Larry was extremely helpful and answered any inquiries right away. We followed the instructions to take care of the cabin and the septic which were easy to understand.

Make sure to check out BuckBay Shellfish Farm, I think we ate 15 lbs. of clams last week. If anyone comes across a black iPhone let me know. The lodge was just as described (perfect) and I can't wait to come back next summer.

Post-graduation celebration

  • 5 of 5

We reluctantly returned home to New Mexico after a blissful week at Buckhorn Lodge following two college graduations this spring. Thankfully I have lots of pictures which will remind me of our time in the San Juan Islands.

Buckhorn Lodge was exactly as described and we had no problems finding the home. All the information from the owner was detailed and helpful. Larry answered the couple of questions I had before we went promptly and helpfully and we had no need to contact him after we were there. I would echo a previous reviewer who appreciated dealing directly with the owner - there is a real person there! - and not a management company.

The accomodations were very comfortable with good quality sheets and cozy comforters on the beds. (It was cool the first part of the week so the comforters were appreciated; also the electric "fireplace" for heat!). It was fully stocked with everything we could want or need, from ping-pong to pots and pans to feed a crowd. We used the kayaks and the row boat to paddle around the cove and the bikes to ride into town, where we were lucky enough to see the Solstice Parade and wander the farmers' market on Saturday. And you can't beat the view from the porch or the hot tub, where one afternoon a deer appeared maybe four feet away to munch on some leaves while we were hot-tubbing.

We were so comfortable at the house, in fact, that we didn't eat one meal out (except for a chocolate croisant at Rose's Bakery and Café, which was delicious).

We also did lots of hiking at nearby Moran State Park, Obstruction Pass State Park, and Turtleback Mountain, all recommended. Be ready for a steady uphill climb at Turtleback Mountain, but the views from the top are worth it!

Thanks, Larry and Michelle, for sharing your home with us! We would love to come back!

Drive or hike up to the top of Mt. Constitution for amazing panoramic views of the San Juan's and all the way into Canada! Or just walk up Racoon pt. road from the house and see bald eagles and deer. Sitting on the deck of the house, you will likely see a seal pop it's head out of the water to check you out.
