A WILDLIFE HAVEN ON THE COLORADO RIVER BORDERING ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK

Grand Lake House Rental Photos and Description

3 Bedrooms + Loft - 3.5 Bathrooms, Sleeps 6-10

Welcome to 'Hills Hideaway,' a 4,000 sq. ft. timeless hand hewn log home (built in 2000) which will give you ultimate mountain comfort and ambience for your 'grand scale' Grand Lake Vacation! Located in the 'heart of nature' on 2 acres stretching along the banks of the winding headwaters of the Colorado River and Rocky Mountain National Park. We designed our home to fully appreciate the splendor of mountain living by 'bringing the outdoors in' with lots of 8' tempered glass windows and doors for maximum viewing, A 21' vaulted ceiling, and numerous skylights throughout to give a light and open feeling.

Bedrooms : Each bedroom has its own private bath which makes this home ideal for up to 3 couples. The Master Bedroom (with King bed) and the 'Aspen Bedroom' (with queen bed) are located on the main floor. The 'Star Gazing Bedroom' (with queen bed) is located upstairs and has banks of skylights for optimal viewing of stars and galaxies. This room has a private deck. All bedrooms have incredible views of the river and RMNP, the meadows, or mountains. 'Bears Den' Loft (with 2 pullout queen futons) sleeps 4 - ideal for younger children/teens. Has a great sitting/viewing deck.

Kitchen & dining: The Gourmet Kitchen on the main floor has slab granite countertops, Viking appliances throughout, including a gas 4 burner range with built-in griddle, ceramic Dacor cooktop and brass bar sink in the 8' granite center island, 2 ovens, dishwasher, microwave, SubZero refrigerator and is fully equipped for a most memorable culinary experience. Dining area, off kitchen, seats 8 at table + 4 bar stools at center island.

20' X 20' rear deck: Located off the great room overlooking the Colorado River into RMNP. The deck has tables and chairs to seat 8 with an umbrella along with multiple lounge chairs and glider. Gas Webber BBQ grill + Webber charcoal grill. Hammock off deck.

Outdoor activities: Horse Shoes provided, wildlife

viewing, campfire with log seats(be sure a burning ban is not in effect because of dry conditions). We have a great wood picnic table close to the campfire area. Help yourself to the wood. Evening time is a great time to enjoy a good campfire. Be sure to put the fire out with water when done!

If you are looking for a 'little slice of heaven,' a tastefully decorated, relaxing retreat, and ready to enjoy 'getting up close and personal' watching wildlife, you will enjoy our home. At anytime you may see a moose and baby strolling by our rear deck or elk or deer playing in the meadow or cooling off in the river. There is a well traveled game trail from RMNP crossing the river into our meadow. You can watch chipmunks, a variety of mountain birds including Mountain and Black Capped Chickadees, Crested Jays, Red Crossbills and lots of colorful hummingbirds daily. Our friendly Red Fox is a regular visitor and Osprey fly often up and down the river in search of trout. You may also see an occasional Bald Eagle, owl, or River Otter.

Guestbook comments from the owner
Our entire family thoroughly enjoyed "Hills Hideaway"! We have been coming to Grand Lake for over 30 years, and moose, elk, small animals and hummingbirds were more abundant around your cabin than we have ever seen anywhere else since coming out here. The grandkids really enjoyed that! It is also very relaxing having the river running along the backside - great for sleeping. We had a most memorable vacation. Thanks so much for letting us share your beautiful home for a short period of time.

As natives of Colorado we have been coming to Grand Lake since childhood - it's like a magnet! Having both retired from working in real estate out of the Denver Metro area for over 30 years, we have seen lots of areas and property. We searched long and hard for our perfect, peaceful location on the river backing to RMNP for our retirement dream home retreat. We so enjoy photographing the abundant wildlife, fishing and hiking in the splendid beauty and ruggedness of RMNP, yet within 10 minutes of the conveniences that Grand Lake Village has to offer. We have only shared our home previously for 2 weeks in 2010 and 2011 with vacation travelers. This summer we are offering more time and hope whoever vacations in 'Hills Hideaway' will care for and enjoy it as much as we, our family and our friends have and still do.

Kirk Hills purchased this house in 2000

Why choose grand lake, 'hills hideaway', and this location: we are literally at the gateway to rocky mountain national park (RMNP)! Our home is located 5 minutes from Kawuneeche Visitors Center and the entrance to rmnp to go over trail ridge road (the highest continuous paved road in north america) elevation of 12,183 ft. - only 45 minutes to estes park. Horses for rent with scheduled trail rides are located at neighboring winding river campground. You can fish in the head waters of the Colorado river right from our property (fly/lures only - Colo.Fishing license required). Also, you can fish a private stocked lake ( a 5 minute walk) no license required - we must give you a guest badge for fishing. This is a catch and release lake, however, you can keep enough fish for your dinner. Boats, canoes, kayaks, pedal boat rentals or a pontoon tour of grand lake are available at grand lake marina.

Historic grand lake village is only 10 minutes away with nostalgic board walks leading to quaint boutiques and art galleries, gift shops, ice cream and sweet shops, wonderful restaurants and top-notch live performances at the Rocky Mountain Repertory Theater. Public 18 hole Grand Lake Golf course is only 3 miles away and 3 other golf courses are within a 30 minute drive. Hot Sulphur Springs mineral baths are only 30 minutes away.

We cannot emphasize enough, the joy of getting up early each morning while having a cup of hot coffee and not knowing what animals or birds you may see. It is constant entertainment. One time we witnessed a whole herd of elk including babies and the bull running up and down the river, splashing and cooling off and playing in the river. These events will be engrained in memories of our stay at our cabin. These are the type of memories we want you to experience! Try sitting on the upper deck looking up the meadow (early morning or evening) and the wildlife does not even know of your presence - a good time to photograph!

WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE!

  • 5 of 5
We had a magnificent five night stay at Hill's Hideaway full of relaxing family memories! We had lots of fun with the our two young children fishing both on the river and the private access lake! We spent one night watching a moose for two hours! We enjoyed making wonderful meals in the beautiful kitchen! The pictures on the site do not do the inside of the home justice - it is gorgeous! Our breakfast at Fat Cat Cafe was delicious and our hike to Adams Falls was well worth it!
The owners, Kirk and Melva, are genuinely nice people who take great pride in their home. They were kind and easy to work with and they really take care of you. If we are ever in the area again, we would definitely stay at Hill's Hideaway!

BEAUTIFUL HOME, AMAZING WILDLIFE VIEWING

  • 5 of 5
Upon our arrival we were greeted by several deer and a moose! (My two and six year old were amazed!) The wildlife parade continued each day as we observed a herd of elk, more deer, two huge bull moose, a fox, copious birds and chipmunks, and two Colorado River Otters (very rare sighting)! Not only was the animal experience amazing - the home was equally awe-inspiring! It is beautifully decorated, very well located and immaculately clean. Every convenience was available and the kitchen was outfitted with every gadget and appliance we needed. We did cook a lot!
The home owners were wonderful and very accommodating, and provided a great notebook with recommendations concerning Grand lake. We really enjoyed fishing in the pond near the cabin! The kids loved it and caught several trout. Also we enjoyed roasting smores' on the cabin's fire pit, and renting ATV's just down the road. Hill's Hideaway and Grand Lake are perfect for families. There are many opportunities to relax and to play. We will recommend both to our friends and family!

NO CHILDREN OR TEENAGERS!

  • 2 of 5
This is such a beautiful home. It is clean and very well kept. The owners are very proud of their home and love it very much. The setting and location are just perfect. We had moose and all kinds of animals visit us throughout the week. We fished in the lake and river and took many great hikes. If the rating were based on location and family experience it would be an excellent. I gave this home a fair because of the small, yet large, non-listed details! I would caution families with children and teenagers about renting this home. There are many, many small items and very sentimental things of value everywhere in this home. There are live stuffed animals in glass cases and lots of toy stuffed animals and breakable items placed everywhere. I was paranoid all week about the kids breaking something, not taking off their shoes and getting the floors dirty or scratched. Keeping the floors clean was difficult because it rained hard every day and there were no rugs to wipe your feet on when entering the house. You should also be aware that the home must be spotless when you leave. Each item must be placed in its original and EXACT place that you found it in. Each stain, scratch, pull, non spotless item or item not in it's original place will be noted, photographed and sent to you in an e-mail afterwards. Your deposit WILL be used to clean any small stains or make any slight repairs. The bottom line is...if you want to have a relaxing vacation with your kids or teenagers, you might want to find another place to stay.

Owner's Response: We have both been in real estate for over 30 years and operated and managed many rentals. We do understand what "normal wear and tear" is and what "reasonably clean condition" is all about. We opened our home to a total of 10 VRBO/HOMEAWAY vacationing families during July and August 2013. All but 2 of these families had children or teenagers. We have had no issues with the other 9 vacation rental families and returned their full security deposit with a note of thanks for leaving our home in nice condition. Normal laundry and cleaning is expected. We have rough surface door mats at all front and back doors for cleaning wet/muddy shoes. We also have a large slate entry suitable for wet/muddy shoes. It is amazing how the above negative review transpired only after the renter was informed that part of her damage deposit was being withheld. This same vacation renter left tokens of appreciation and a nice note on our kitchen table saying how much her family enjoyed their week at our home upon their departure. Yes, we held out funds for our 2 private lake fishing badges that were taken by this family on 8/08/13 and have not yet been returned by the renter (renter to have mailed back the badges some days ago -- renter to be reimbursed for badges if received by 8/23/13). The other funds held out were for broken, or missing items, stain removal and carpet pull repair damages (less than half of renters deposit was retained). We have been so pleased with the other 9 vacation renters of this season. All 9 other vacation renters showed respect for our home and belongings, left very nice compliments in our guest book, and most stated they would like to come back again. Sadly, this is the only family that we would not invite to return.

Absolutely stunning! From the four moose at dusk hanging out in the yard to the private fishing lake this place is truly five star! Every detail down to the water bottle on your night stand makes you feel pampered and away from life for awhile. I hope to stay here again!
