At anytime you may see a moose and baby strolling by our rear deck or elk or deer playing in the meadow or cooling off in the river. There is a well traveled game trail from RMNP crossing the river into our meadow. You can watch chipmunks, a variety of mountain birds including Mountain and Black Capped Chickadees, Crested Jays, Red Crossbills and lots of colorful hummingbirds daily. Our friendly Red Fox is a regular visitor and Osprey fly often up and down the river in search of trout. You may also see an occasional Bald Eagle, owl, or River Otter.

Guestbook comments from the owner
Our entire family thoroughly enjoyed "Hills Hideaway"! We have been coming to Grand Lake for over 30 years, and moose, elk, small animals and hummingbirds were more abundant around your cabin than we have ever seen anywhere else since coming out here. The grandkids really enjoyed that! It is also very relaxing having the river running along the backside - great for sleeping. We had a most memorable vacation. Thanks so much for letting us share your beautiful home for a short period of time.
As natives of Colorado we have been coming to Grand Lake since childhood - it's like a magnet! Having both retired from working in real estate out of the Denver Metro area for over 30 years, we have seen lots of areas and property. We searched long and hard for our perfect, peaceful location on the river backing to RMNP for our retirement dream home retreat. We so enjoy photographing the abundant wildlife, fishing and hiking in the splendid beauty and ruggedness of RMNP, yet within 10 minutes of the conveniences that Grand Lake Village has to offer. We have only shared our home previously for 2 weeks in 2010 and 2011 with vacation travelers. This summer we are offering more time and hope whoever vacations in 'Hills Hideaway' will care for and enjoy it as much as we, our family and our friends have and still do.
Why choose grand lake, 'hills hideaway', and this location: we are literally at the gateway to rocky mountain national park (RMNP)! Our home is located 5 minutes from Kawuneeche Visitors Center and the entrance to rmnp to go over trail ridge road (the highest continuous paved road in north america) elevation of 12,183 ft. - only 45 minutes to estes park. Horses for rent with scheduled trail rides are located at neighboring winding river campground. You can fish in the head waters of the Colorado river right from our property (fly/lures only - Colo.Fishing license required). Also, you can fish a private stocked lake ( a 5 minute walk) no license required - we must give you a guest badge for fishing. This is a catch and release lake, however, you can keep enough fish for your dinner. Boats, canoes, kayaks, pedal boat rentals or a pontoon tour of grand lake are available at grand lake marina.
Historic grand lake village is only 10 minutes away with nostalgic board walks leading to quaint boutiques and art galleries, gift shops, ice cream and sweet shops, wonderful restaurants and top-notch live performances at the Rocky Mountain Repertory Theater. Public 18 hole Grand Lake Golf course is only 3 miles away and 3 other golf courses are within a 30 minute drive. Hot Sulphur Springs mineral baths are only 30 minutes away.
We cannot emphasize enough, the joy of getting up early each morning while having a cup of hot coffee and not knowing what animals or birds you may see. It is constant entertainment. One time we witnessed a whole herd of elk including babies and the bull running up and down the river, splashing and cooling off and playing in the river. These events will be engrained in memories of our stay at our cabin. These are the type of memories we want you to experience! Try sitting on the upper deck looking up the meadow (early morning or evening) and the wildlife does not even know of your presence - a good time to photograph!
