About Mary Donnelly

I grew up in New York and came out to San Diego to attend college many (many) years ago and I haven't left yet. I love living in San Diego and I love my house. I spend my free time growing veggies and working on my historical house.

Mary Donnelly purchased this cabin in 1999

Why Mary Donnelly chose Hillcrest

I didn't plan on living in Hillcrest but when I saw the house I knew it was for me. I am a cook and although the kitchen is small it works perfect. This home suits me perfectly.

What makes this cabin unique

I love the neighborhood, the walking to everything lifestyle, hearing the zoo animals at night from my yard. The beautiful exotic flowers everywhere. Most of all the friendly people.

Wonderful little cabin

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Hillcrest cabin for four nights while exploring San Diego. Mary was extremely nice, helpful and hospitable and gave numerous recommendations for places to visit in the area. The cabin itself has a lot of charm and character, and even though it's small the layout provided ample space. The kitchen was very well-stocked as far as pots, pans, dishes, glasses, knives, etc., making cooking and meal prep easy (not always the case when traveling). It was wonderful to eat breakfast outside at the small patio table each morning, nestled in the peaceful wooded hills surrounding the property.

From the cabin we were able to walk to the zoo and Balboa Park, and we had numerous options for restaurants and cafes in the neighborhood. The location is very accessible to the highways making it easy to get around the city and to the outlying areas, where we spent most days hiking.

Next time we are in San Diego Mary's little Hillcrest Cabin will be at the top of our list to stay again. It was a perfect fit!

All That and More

  • 5 of 5

The many delights of Mary's little cabin are well described in the multiple previous five star reviews, including my own from my prior stay last November. In addition to all of the wonderful features of this charming little cabin, is the fact that Mary is an amazing host. She went so far as to spend a week living in the cabin so that she could see how best to make it as comfortable as possible for her guests. She shares the goodies from her garden. I made fresh lemonade, and rosemary potatoes from lemon tree and the rosemary bush just outside the cabin door. Mary has two bicycles and even the bike tire pump available for her guests. She provides a beach bag and beach towels which I used when we had a picnic at the beach. Although the kitchen is tiny, it is easy to work in and is nicely stocked with a dishwasher, service for six including wine glasses, and even such special items as sea salt and fresh ground pepper. I did some serious cooking while there, and found all the equipment and utensils I needed. Mary is such a gracious host. She is cheery and thoughtful, full of helpful advice, but never intrusive. For more details, please refer to my review from November 2014. I have now had two stays at Mary's, two weeks each. I hope to have many more.

Perfect Retreat

  • 5 of 5

We rented Mary's cabin for a getaway in Mid-March. What an amazing place! We had such a great time in a perfect location that was well within walking distance to the zoo, parks, restaurants, grocery stores, pharmacies, and shopping. We had a car and never had any issues with street parking and loved that San Diego's beaches were roughly 15 minutes away. The cabin is what was offered in the listing and much, much more. Looking back, there was nothing we could have asked for that would have made the stay better - the entire atmosphere was relaxing and very much our speed.

Waking up to the sound of birds; picking fresh lemons; enjoying my pasta with Mary's fresh basil.... We loved our stay in the cabin in the city. I didn't want to leave. The cabin felt like our home with everything you could need, especially in the kitchen. The thoughtful little things: a beach bag with towels and sunscreen; plastic silverware and plates for picnics; a curling iron; movies........ Thanks Mary. It was wonderful.
