A perfect place to make your home base while you enjoy North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains and all the activities that the local area has to offer.
The Road Less Traveled Cabin is located in the town of Piney Creek inside a gated community, on a 1 acre wooded lot that sits on the New River in a very private and secluded area. The cabin location is part of a 26 mile segment of the New River that is designated as part of the U.S. National Wild and Scenic River System- perfect for kayaking, canoeing, fishing and exploring nature. Enjoy all the comforts of home, with a stocked kitchen including crockpot, hot air popcorn maker, pots, pans and cooking utensils. There is a gas grill on the main floor deck. The dining table sits 6, with two more seats at the bar and an additional leaf for the table available. There is also a toaster, coffee maker and a washer and dryer. All linens are provided.
The cabin sleeps 11, with 2 queen Sleep Number beds and two twin beds in the loft sleeping area, two full sized pull out couches and one twin pull out sleep chair.
The main living room has a beautiful stone wood burning fireplace and cozy, comfortable leather seating area.
The cabin has Wifi internet, Blu-ray DVD players, Netflix, and a phone. The upstairs loft is the perfect kid hangout with old school Atari (or plug in your own gaming system) and a Blu-ray DVD player with Netflix and tv. You can also play cards or board games on the gaming table in the loft overlooking the river or throw darts on the kid-friendly dart board. DVDs and books are also available. The lower level is perfect for the grownups with a foosball table and dart board, as well as a flat screen tv with Netflix and Blu-ray/DVD player. There is also a second living room area downstairs, making the lower level a private sanctuary from the rest of the house.
Outside you'll find two porch swings, a picnic table and plenty of places to sit on one of the three huge decks overlooking the New River, where you can watch the geese and hummingbirds, catch a glimpse of deer walking by or just sit and listen to the bubbling of two small creeks on either side of the property.
When you're ready to venture out there are several common areas in the neighborhood with river access, or you can put in a canoe, kayak or tube right from the property. There is also great fishing - the New River has small mouth bass and trout. The neighborhood also has an old Indian cave where you can explore and then head down a short trail to a picnic area and bench by the river.
Other things to do in the area:
There are several outfitters within a 5 minute drive that rent canoes, kayaks and tubes.
West Jefferson is about 30 minutes down the mountain, where you can shop, take in art galleries, restaurants, farmers market, the famous Ashe County Cheese Factory, bowling, movies, or go antiquing.
The Blue Ridge Parkway is about 25-30 minutes away, as are the New River State Park, Stone Mountain State Park, Mount Jefferson State Park, Grayson Highlands State Park and the town of Sparta.
If you like bicycling then you can check out the famous Virgina Creeper Trail (50 min. drive), where you rent bikes or bring your own to coast down a beautiful trail that is great for all ages!
During winter a four wheel drive vehicle is recommended during periods of snow and ice.
The cabin does not have a dish washer.
We are originally from Florida but have lived in Charlotte, NC for the last several years.
Heidi purchased this cabin in 2012
We love the beautiful mountains of North Carolina and have always dreamed of someday owning a place with some moving water on it. We still pinch ourselves that we found this amazing place on the New River! The Road Less Traveled Cabin has the safety of a gated community and yet lots of privacy. Great family friendly area with tons to do.
One look at the breathtaking views of the new river and the blue ridge mountains and we were hooked! We love the outdoors, and here we can canoe, kayak, tube, mountain bike, hike or just sit and stare at the river or a fire. Perfect!
We came, we hiked, we conquered. For us it was a well deserved breath of fresh air from (pharmacy/med/grad) school and work. We'll go back with memories of midnight bonfires, waterfalls, class I rapids, and the joys of sitting down to a grilled meal with loved ones. Thank you for making this dream a reality!
I rented this cabin to accomidate our small family for my daughter's graduation from Oak Hill Academy. The cabin was very clean and the views are incredible. The boys were very excited with all the small mouth bass they caught right out back. The girls enjoyed relaxing on all the decks. None of us ever turned a TV on. The amazing sounds and sights of nature are all around. The owner was very accomidating and went out of her way to fix a small issue immediately as well as allowed me to come a day early to prepare the cabin with groceries and decorations and such, before the rest of the group arrived for the same price I would've paid for a local hotel. I love how personal this rental experience was. It was my first time using this site and I will definitely use it again and recommend this cabin to other families at Oak Hill Academy.
My family (8 adults & 4 kids & 3 puppies) had an amazing time in the cabin. Coffee's in the morning were breathtaking. The river was gorgeous and peaceful. Even the neighbors came by and said their hello's and were incredibly friendly. We loved it here. I do agree that during the winter months, a 4 x 4 is required, luckily we didn't need it. Rooms were comfy, kitchen was great, fireplace was perfect, we even saw deer. The kids went out adventuring. We were all very happy, there was plenty of space for all of us. The owners are wonderful to work with, they are very helpful and kind. Our trip was perfect.
One small detail is the mattress for the sofa bed in the lower level is very thin, so you can feel all the springs. I did bring my air mattress so it was a quick resolution to a minor matter. We would love to stay here again but next time during the summer to enjoy other activities.
Our church rented this cabin for the parents of our youth group. The kids and leaders stayed in one cabin and we rented two for parents. The cabin was clean and the view of the water was awesome. It's nestled in the woods, but we were still able to lay in the sun on the lower deck. A couple of people fished in the river just below the cabin. A small group went rafting a couple of miles up the river. The weather was perfect. We gathered as a group for worship in the common area at the river. The gated community is very quiet and secure. No problem with letting the kids walk between cabins. Can't wait to do it again.
We ventured to this beautiful cabin for the Thanksgiving holiday with another family (4 adults, 4 kids + dog). It was a beautiful, snowy day when we arrived, which made the kids very excited! They loved sledding down the hill next to the cabin, and venturing out into the woods and trails (many deer!). I think our dog had more fun "frolicking" about than the kids! The cabin was quite cozy for us all. Enough space for the kids to hang out in the loft area and adults to have their own space in the main living area and/or basement. We used the smoker available outside the cabin to cook two small turkeys, and the kitchen was spacious enough for us to prepare the meals (although, no dishwasher). We were thankful there were two extra leafs to add to the dinning table so we could all sit together. The views of the river were spectacular! We did attempt to fish, but it was just a bit too cold for the kids. I do think one would need a 4-wheel vehicle if there were any snow accumulation. The drive through the neighborhood is quite beautiful, but winding and steep. We have rented cabins in this area before, but this is the first time we experienced owners who were extremely kind and helpful in answering our questions (very accommodating). We would love to come back in the summer to take advantage of the tubing (and fishing) on the river.
We had a great time at "A Road Less Travelled" and found the owners very polite and helpful when we called to find out about things to do in the area. The cabin was very clean when we arrived and was stocked with everything we needed to enjoy the weekend. We spent one day biking the Virginia Creeper Trail (about an hour away) and another day canoeing on the New River. We would highly recommend both activities! While at the cabin we spent time playing darts, foosball, Atari games and just relaxing on the deck. The only complaint that we would have is that the hill down to the river is very steep and there is not a great river access point from the property which disappointed the kids a bit. They did tie up some tubes one afternoon but swimming was not really an option from the cabin site. However, you can still enjoy the river from one of the common areas or at one of the River Outfitters very close by. Overall we had a wonderful experience. Thank you!
