About Tom Evans
My father was born and raised in Redgranite, Wisconsin. He served in Europe during WWII and in the end married the enemy, my mother. Together they began to raise a family in Madison, Wisconsin in 1947. My father received his doctorate from the Univ. of Wisconsin in 1956 and my mother received hers from Ohio State in 1967. Our family started out in Madison, but in 1957 moved to New Concord, Ohio where my father became Academic Dean of Muskingum College, and my mother taught German. In 1971 we moved to Mt. Pleasant, Michigan where they both taught at Central Michigan University and chaired their respective departments. It was at CMU in the early '70s when they learned about the Naples/Bonita Beach area and soon fell in love with it. They bought and sold numerous lots in Naples until they could afford to buy this little untouched piece of paradise, a sandbar in the gulf called Little Hickory Island. The island had very few residents and I remember when they built this house in 1980, I had to drive all the way to downtown Naples, to find a hardware store. In 1990 they retired from Central Michigan University and lived here full time. In 2010 my sister and I moved them, reluctantly, to assisted living in the towers at Arbor Trace, just a few miles south on Vanderbilt drive. In order to keep the love of their life in the family, my sister and I have decided to rent the upstairs of the house to help offset the cost of the brutal maintenance and ever-increasing taxes. Although the main floor of the house is now a rental, the oak and fruitwood furniture along with rich carpets and drapes, still hold the timeless warmth and charm they created.
Tom Evans purchased this house in 1980
