|Minimum Stay||3 nights|
'Alani House sits on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, and Honoli'i Beach is at the end of the block. With direct access to the black sand beach and lifeguards on duty, Honoli'i is one of the Big Island's favorite destinations for swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, and surfing. With a panoramic view of the ocean, you can watch whales and cruise ships from the front lanais. There are 3 lush waterfalls within easy walking distance from the house.
We are only 2.4 miles (about 3 to 4 minutes) from downtown Hilo along Hilo Bay and the Hamakua Coast. Driving to the airport takes only 10 to 12 minutes. Before you book anywhere else, ask if there's access in and out of the ocean with lifeguards to protect you and your family. Will you be located south of Hilo and possibly exposed to dust and vog in the Puna Distric, or will you enjoy the clear skies of the Hamakua Coast? And also ask whether you'll be drinking purified municipal water or catchment instead. 'Alani House provides all of these benefits, plus wireless connectivity via high-speed internet cable modem.
Places to see:
Driving south, downtown Hilo is only 4 minutes away. Another 4 to 7 minutes will get you to four additional swimming and snorkeling reefs. At about the same distance are Rainbow Falls, Kaumana Caves, Lyman Museum, Ocean Discovery Center, Pacific Tsunami Museum, 'Imiloa Astronomy Center, and the Queen Liliuokalani Gardens. Another surf break, called Pohoiki, located at the Isaac Hale Beach Park is about 45 minutes away. While there, you are within 2 miles of the Kapoho tide pools, Lava Trees State Park, and MacKenzie State Park. Within 50 minutes from 'Alani House, you can drive to the hiking entrance for flowing lava, or to Mauna Kea where you can view the North Star and the Southern Cross in the same night sky.
Driving north from 'Alani House, you will find a scenic drive within 5 minutes, and Akaka Falls about 25 minutes away. An additional 30 minutes will get you to the sacred valley of Waipi'o. You can descend into the valley, or just take photos from the breathtaking overlook.
Are you a visiting physician and need an extended stay? We have experience working with medical staffing companies. And consider this when choosing a location, Alae Point has several advantages over Hawaiian Paradise Parks. Alae Point is only 5 to 7 minutes from the hospital and there are 2 routes to get there. HPP has only one main road and it can take from 40 to 55 minutes depending upon traffic.

We are professionals who love and enjoy the unique beauty of each Hawai'ian Island.
Rory Foster purchased this house in 2011
For us, the Big Island is one of the last havens for 'old Hawai'i.' We hope you will enjoy seeing the sea turtles (honu) and humpback whales (kohola) in their natural environment.
It is difficult to overstate the advantages of location. Parking at Honoli'i Beach can be extremely limited, and there are times when no parking is available. Staying at 'Alani House means that you don't have to worry about it.
Check-in is after 4:00PM, and check-out is 10:00AM
This home is beautiful! Nice sized bedrooms - especially the master suite and bath. All we needed was available and Rory would have obtained whatever we needed, I am sure. The view was great: the grey whales were in harbor and performing daily. Be aware, though, that the traffic noise is LOUD. We all live in the "country," so the traffic was disturbing even with the white-noise machines. Earplugs were the only thing that worked for us.
We were pleasantly surprised with Alani house. Rory made us feel comfortable right away and even made last minute accommodation for our 1 y/o. We will definitely recommend this house to friends looking to travel to Hilo.
This was the second time our group of 6 have used this property. It is a very nice home, well equipped and furnished. We are looking forward to another visit in '16.
The home is beautiful and spacious! Every amenity you could want. Rory was the perfect host - helpful but not intrusive. Beautiful view from the porch and front room. Our only regret was we were so busy with fun activities that we did not get to enjoy much time at the house. We would definitely use this house again!
My family stayed at 'Alani House in Hilo for 5 nights over the school holidays at the end of 2014. What a fantastic find!
First, the owners/managers have their act together. We've used VRBO regularly for 10 years, and sometimes have spotty response from owners, leading to a bit of trepidation about whether the keys will be there, the house in working order, someone available to help if necessary, etc. Not in the case of 'Alani. Rory emailed us a couple weeks before our arrival to remind us and insure that everything was a go. He stayed in touch via text up until our arrival, even providing some suggestions of sites to see on the drive over from Kona. Illegal rentals are a big issue in Hawaii right now, and we've all read the stories of vacationers showing up to a house that doesn't exist; we appreciated that Rory & Wren have their permits conspicuously posted in the kitchen and that they abide their local taxation and short-term rental rules.
Second, the house itself is awesome! The pictures don't fully convey its level of high quality. The living room is spacious, with beautiful wood flooring and high ceilings. The 3 bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms were like new and tastefully appointed. Towels and bedding provided. We cook family meals -- it's THE major bonding activity when we vacation -- and the 'Alani kitchen was perfect. Clean as can be, high quality appliances, fully-stocked pots/pans/tools. A bar connects visually to the adjoining eating area where our kids played cards while we cooked.
We used the downstairs laundry room several times during our visit. Both machines seemed brand new and of highest quality. Detergent provided.
The location is unbeatable, and we ended up hanging out nearby for that very reason. It was such a pleasure to be able to leave the car in the covered carpark and simply walk 2 blocks along the ocean view street to Honoli'i Beach Park. Our pre-teens used Rory's boogie board and we availed ourselves of other beach gear the house has on hand. It's a postcard-beautiful location that had us on "rejuvenation mode" all week. Back at the house we would spend each morning and evening on the two lanai-style covered outdoor areas, commanding a view of sunrise and cruise ship crossings.
It's clear that Rory and Wren are active owners, making the regular investments necessary to assure their house meets and exceeds expectations. My family will be back to Hilo and the 'Alani House.
This was a home away from home!!
Rory (Sr) was a wonderful host and made us feel very welcome at his charming house by the water. This is a very special location - right on the water, with brilliant views of a beautiful sunrise and cruise ships pulling into Hilo. The home is spotlessly clean, with comfortable beds and a well-equipped kitchen.
Rory is very soft-spoken, unobtrusive and a gracious host. He gave our kids their first (two) private surf lessons at a popular beach within a short walking distance and they loved it! Rory was a fund of local info, all his recommendations for food and sights were spot on! We will definitely be back!
