BEACH, SURF, WATERFALLS, CRUISE SHIPS, 2 MILES TO HILO

Hilo House Rental Photos and Description

Vacation Property with on-site property manager

'Alani House sits on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, and Honoli'i Beach is at the end of the block. With direct access to the black sand beach and lifeguards on duty, Honoli'i is one of the Big Island's favorite destinations for swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, and surfing. With a panoramic view of the ocean, you can watch whales and cruise ships from the front lanais. There are 3 lush waterfalls within easy walking distance from the house.

We are only 2.4 miles (about 3 to 4 minutes) from downtown Hilo along Hilo Bay and the Hamakua Coast. Driving to the airport takes only 10 to 12 minutes. Before you book anywhere else, ask if there's access in and out of the ocean with lifeguards to protect you and your family. And ask whether you'll be drinking purified municipal water or catchment instead. 'Alani House provides all of these benefits, plus wireless connectivity via high-speed internet cable modem.

Places to see:

Driving south, downtown Hilo is only 4 minutes away. Another 4 to 7 minutes will get you to four additional swimming and snorkeling reefs. At about the same distance are Rainbow Falls, Kaumana Caves, Lyman Museum, Ocean Discovery Center, Pacific Tsunami Museum, 'Imiloa Astronomy Center, and the Queen Liliuokalani Gardens. Another surf break, called Pohoiki, located at the Isaac Hale Beach Park is about 45 minutes away. While there, you are within 2 miles of the Kapoho tide pools, Lava Trees State Park, and MacKenzie State Park. Within 50 minutes from 'Alani House, you can drive to the hiking entrance for flowing lava, or to Mauna Kea where you can view the North Star and the Southern Cross in the same night sky.

Driving north from 'Alani House, you will find a scenic drive within 5 minutes, and Akaka Falls about 25 minutes away. An additional 30 minutes will get you to the sacred valley of Waipi'o. You can descend into the valley, or just take photos from the breathtaking overlook.

For doctors:

Are you a visiting physician and need an extended stay? We have experience working with medical staffing companies. And consider this when choosing a location, Alae Point has several advantages over Hawaiian Paradise Parks. Alae Point is only 5 to 7 minutes from the hospital and there are 2 routes to get there. HPP has only one main road and it can take from 40 to 55 minutes depending upon traffic.

We are professionals who love and enjoy the unique beauty of each Hawai'ian Island.

Rory Foster purchased this house in 2011

For us, the Big Island is one of the last havens for 'old Hawai'i.' We hope you will enjoy seeing the sea turtles (honu) and humpback whales (kohola) in their natural environment.

It is difficult to overstate the advantages of location. Parking at Honoli'i Beach can be extremely limited, and there are times when no parking is available. Staying at 'Alani House means that you don't have to worry about it.

Check-in is after 4:00PM, and check-out is 10:00AM

BEAUTIFUL HOUSE....STRANGE SITUATION

  • 4 of 5
My family and I stayed in this gorgeous house for 3 days. We really love everything about the actual house. Here were the negatives.
1. There is A LOT of road noise
2. The frogs outside are EXTREMELY loud and there isn't any a/c so you HAVE to leave the windows open
3. The homeowners son lives downstairs. He is perfectly lovely and did his best to stay out of our way but it is still weird. We felt like we were in HIS house. We felt like intruders and that we couldn't just relax and be ourselves. It just felt "off".

Owner's Response: Aloha Beth,

We provide air purifiers in the rooms. Although the air is fresh from the ocean, the air purifiers cover the noise of the coqui frogs. And each room has a ceiling fan for the early evening. The temperatures drop at night, so even on the hottest nights it becomes comfortable. There is a one room A/C unit available upon request.

Mahalo,
Rory

COMFORTABLE HOME WITH A FEW THINGS TO NOTE

  • 4 of 5
We really enjoyed our stay in their home, but there are a few noteworthy items to mention.

The positives: The owners were very quick to reply and easy to work with during the booking process. They even called me to offer some helpful suggestions on what to see/do in the area, which I really appreciated.

Upon arrival, we found some flowers and chocolates left for us, as well as a clean home ready for our stay. Their son, who is the property manager, was able to answer our questions and went over some of the things about the house that were helpful to know.

The house is on the same street as the beach for easy access and you have views of the water. It's also very close to the main part of town, which was nice.

Some things to note:
1. The house sits RIGHT behind the main road. While covered with trees so you can't see it, you can clearly hear cars and such driving by at night. The trees also bring in a significant amount of birds that seem to come alive all night long (and not during the day!). We all needed to wear ear plugs to get some sleep.

2. The property manager, their son, lives downstairs and there is no separation beyond the flight of stairs and the door to his area. While it was not a problem at all for us, it's something to note.

3. The beach is a black rock beach. No sand. And there's not really any place to put down a towel, etc. It's a beach meant for boogie boarders and surf boarders. If that's your thing, you're going to love it! But, if you want a regular sandy beach, you'll have to go elsewhere.

4. They have nice wood floors throughout much of the house, but it was a HUGE problem for us. We went down to the beach when the weather was nice. Even though we showered at the beach, showered outside the house, made our kids strip down outside and come in only wearing a towel, and left our shoes outside, the owners said we STILL left significant damage on their wood floors from the black rocks at the beach and are not returning our security deposit. While we find this very hard to believe that we did all the damage they said given the precautions we took, we think this is very important for others to know. This is probably not the house for you if you have kids or are frequent users of the beach. We never saw the damage when we were there, but it must be very easy to make if that is the case.

This house is a nice, comfortable house. Owners are nice people, but important to consider above factors before booking.

OUR BEST ACCOMMODATION ON HAWAII!!! BOOK ONLY HERE, YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT!

  • 5 of 5

Owner's Response: Danke schön, here is a rough translation from German to English:
We spent a total of 4 weeks in Hawaii with one week each on Oahu, Kauai, Maui, and the Big Island. We always had very beautiful ocean side accommodations, but this was the very best. It is a well maintained enormous house with a living room, where about 50 people could dance, with a very exclusive kitchen with high-quality appliances and granite, where really nothing was missing, with 3 very beautiful bedrooms, with 2 very noble baths and even with its own car port. We felt at home in this great house immediately and the owners Rory and his son Rory were terribly nice and very pleasant. All of my questions were answered in detail and our hosts endeavored to make our stay as pleasant as possible. Also the location of this house was perfect, it is approximately 5 kilometers from Hilo and just 45 minutes from Mauna Kea (4205 meters high) as well as Volcanoes National Park.

We recently stayed in this lovely home just north of Hilo. The location was wonderful and the online description and photos were very accurate. Fabulous view of the ocean and harbor as well as convenient location for surfing as well as touring the local sites.

NO PRIVACY, SHARED HOUSE WITH OWNERS, UNCOMFORTABLE. ORIGINALLY BOOKED FRI-WED, LEFT ON MON

  • 1 of 5
NOT a house with a “ground floor apartment” with onsite property management as one review implies. My husband and I were in Hilo for a wedding. Check in is 3pm. When we land, I get a vmail asking if we arrive at 8pm, but I was never asked about arrival. I call to correct the owner and we arrive ~5pm. The owner and his son are still cleaning the bathroom and kitchen. We go to Safeway to kill time exhausted, we go back and Rory explains rules. Both Rory and his son live downstairs, NOT just his son the “on-site property management.” Every night at 9pm, his son will go to the kitchen to take the trash out and every day they will dry the bath showers. He’s also inquiring about our schedule and if we’ll mostly be out of the house. I don’t know! We’re here for a wedding, on vacation, we’re spontaneous. One of the advantages of a house rental is actually staying in it. He wants to know so they can do house maintenance. That’s ok but within reason. If the house needs repairs for the use of the house, ok, but repairs for the owners benefit? Like re-caulking the bathroom or finishing a remodel? That should be saved for when guests aren’t renting the place and not on MY time or money. If those are the kind of repairs discussed in the rental agreement under “RIGHT OF ACCESS: The Owners shall have the right of access to rental for repair and maintenance during reasonable hours” then I am disappointed. There is no “downstairs apartment," (I double checked with Zillow). Lesson learned. In the pictures is the staircase leading to a hallway with doors. One door is the laundry, one the garage, and there's a bedroom and bathroom. If they walked room to room, you can hear all the hallway noise in the house. We’re willing to pay for a house to avoid the awkwardness of running into people at a hotel. Call it being anti-social, but it’s something I like to avoid. Or it’s aloha, being friendly. That’s fine for check-in, but we saw the owner 2x day feeling watched. Twice, I had to run away because I wasn’t fully dressed. We had turned down sharing a much bigger rental with our own friends because, we’re willing to pay for space and privacy. Why not say anything about being bothered? It was uncomfortable! What were we going to do? We already paid, we’re busy because of the wedding, it is what it is, and it’s their house. Monday after the wedding, we decided to follow our friends to Kauai and immediately booked it. That spontaneous thing we’re known for. Finally a relaxing vacay!

Owner's Response: Dear Ellen,

We were surprised to hear that your stay was uncomfortable. As you'd mentioned in your review, this is the very first time that we've been made aware that you were unhappy. It is regrettable that we were not given an opportunity to improve the situation.

Occasionally, I travel to the Big Island to assist the property manager with repairs, but I would have been happy to defer them for your convenience had your concerns been expressed. We take pride in keeping 'Alani House in good condition and we feel that most of our guests appreciate our attention to detail.

The property manager’s quarters are located on the lower level along with a hall and laundry which has a separate outside entrance. There is also a staircase inside separating the lower level from the main floor of the house. And we do offer routine housekeeping services, such as trash removal and fresh linen, but the property manager and I avoid entering the main floor.

Pomaika'i (best of luck to you),
Rory

GREAT PLACE

  • 5 of 5
The house was lovely and clean and in a great location with beautiful views of the Hilo harbor. The beds were comfortable with plenty of pillows and towels. Rory the caretaker was helpful and sweet and we enjoyed meeting him. Hilo has lots to offer and it is easy to get all over tge Big Island and see wonderful natural places without a lot if hassle or crowds. The weather was perfect!
