Describing the house as a "retreat" is very appropriate. The natural post and beam woodwork, the open layout, and the ample windows opening out to the wooded property on all sides creates a secluded, stress-free environment that can be either relaxing or invigorating, depending on your mood. The location completes the sense of a retreat. The property is located in the less developed, quiet end of the island. This doesn't mean, though, that there is nothing to do. The "must see" Gay Head lighthouse and cliffs are just two miles to the west. You can't ask for a more beautiful setting for watching the sunset. Just to the south is the uncrowded and seemingly untouched Philbin Beach facing the Atlantic ocean. Lobsterville Beach is a quick bike ride to the north and a bike ferry ride from the quaint fishing village of Menemsha. You will definitely want to go there for the shops, food and overall experience. The sun doesn't just set over Menemsha - it's an event! People from all over head to the beach as sunset approaches with their families, coolers of food, and bottles of wine to watch and applaud the sun as it goes over the horizon. A description of the location would not be complete without mention of the Orange Peel Bakery just two doors down. If you like to wake up and enjoy fresh-out-of-the-oven baked goods and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee, there isn't a better location on the island. The bakery operates on the honor system; you just put your money in the bucket on the counter. You may be the only person there (truly) or have the opportunity to chat the the owner as she prepares her next treat.
As nice as the property is, the owners are even nicer. They accommodated us with the dates we needed, they answered our questions about the area and what to do in wonderful detail, and they're eager to help out however they can. They were very gracious when a minor problem arose, something you can't always expect these days.
To balance this review, the owners bought the house two years ago and are gradually working through a list of improvements. Some of this work is not done yet, but may be by the time you read this review or rent the property. In any case, it had no impact on our enjoyment of the property.
We really enjoyed our stay here. The house was beautiful and Aquinnah was perfect for our family. The owners were very helpful and accomodating. We would love to stay here again!
