Overview

North Park Villa Rental Photos and Description

Fabulous 1 bed, 1 bath - total renovation with backyard grill, ping pong

# 13 on Forbes' list of the 'hippest' neighborhoods in the US, North Park is a vibrant, diverse urban village with a life of its own. Conveniently located near terrific restaurants, cafes and nightlife as well as Balboa Park, San Diego Zoo, downtown San Diego and Coronado Island, this location can't be beat.

Our 1926 Spanish villa -- 'Villa Barajas' -- combines historic character with modern features. We restored this place for everyone to enjoy the kind of travel experience we most appreciate ourselves -- authentic local living, in luxury style, with the comforts of home! Serene, comfortable, private and yet so accessible to what's happening in the village!

The Baker's Suite (#3321) is a cozy, compact 1 bed, 1 bath (just under 400 SF), ideal for two, but can accommodate up to 2 adults with 1-2 children using the comfortable sofa bed. Overall, the feel is organic, clean lined, modern and very warm and inviting -- The French baker's table used for dining was made from reclaimed 19th century scaffolding.

Gorgeous original hardwood floors, exposed brick, fine cabinetry and furnishings, deep Euro tub/shower, central heat/AC, washer and dryer in suite, all new fully equipped kitchen and bath.

We also provide amenities to get your trip started the right way -- K-cup and French press coffee makers, beach towels, blow dryer, iron, luggage rack, shampoo and conditioner, shower gel, hand soaps, laundry detergent, paper products. The kitchen is fully equipped with cookware, dishware, utensils, spices...pretty much whatever you'll need. There is free WIFI and smart TV -- Stream Netflix and Pandora while you relax or enjoy a light meal in the suite.

Spacious grounds with gas grill, ping pong table and delightful seating areas. There is parking for your car on the property. Parking on surrounding streets also is free and typically available.

Walk just two blocks to terrific restaurants -- Italian, French, Mexican, Asian, Vegetarian, Sushi, Pizza -- as well as cafes, breakfast places, home-baked goods, micro brewery, wine bar. Enjoy "La Perla" gourmet tacos with a short or tall brew under the stars. The ramen/noodle house "Underbelly" hops -- there's communal outdoor seating around firepits that make this a lively social spot day or night. Our guests also love "The Smoking Goat" french bistro. A few blocks more and there's a weekly farmer's market (every Thursday), more wine bars, artisan pizza, Asian fusion, American/Californian, homemade ice cream...too many places to list.

With all this eating and imbibing, you may want to get your fitness fix as well, or tune up your mind/body connection, and North Park has yoga, pilates, dance, boxing, various full service gyms...there's even a pole dancing school, for the daring amongst us.

Then again, you're here to enjoy the outdoors, right?

So walk a few blocks to Balboa Park! -- community pool, tennis, golf, hiking and running trains, bike track, bocce court, picnic area, children's play area. On the farther side of Balboa Park, still walking distance (20-30 minutes) or a short ride, are San Diego Zoo, museums and Old Globe Theater.

Drive 5-9 minutes to downtown destinations or take the bus one block away (about 20 minutes with stops) -- The GasLamp Quarter, Little Italy, Seaport Village, Convention Center, Petco Park. Drive 10 min over the bridge to Coronado Island's beautiful beaches and the famous Hotel Del Coronado -- This is the best spot for a beach day, with a huge stretch of beautiful fine sand beach, a promenade for strolling or peddling along the water, beach chair and cabana cover rentals, peddle car rentals, oceanfront restaurants, lounges, cafes and shops. Or, drive 10-15 minutes to other central San Diego beaches (Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach) and other major attractions, including Seaworld.

About Beth Galdieri

We love homes, vacations, people, and customer service. Making people happy in beautiful environments is our 'thing.'

Beth Galdieri purchased this villa in 2012

Why Beth Galdieri chose North Park

When we saw this building, with its old world charm and sophistication - we knew that we had to own it, renovate it - and then provide fabulous, beautiful, comfortable and 'cool' accommodations where people could relax, enjoy the Park, the Zoo, the many restaurants- all within the context of a local San

What makes this villa unique

This building is thought to have been owned a century ago by a church nearby and resided in by church members or out of town visitors. It is a beautiful building and stands out as regal yet simple. This combination of simplicity and beauty attracted us.

Good, but could be better

  • 3 of 5

Overall, this is a nice small place for an individual, couple or three at the most. My wife, 19yr old daughter and I stayed for 4 nights. My summary is below:

Good:

-The modern cabinetry, kitchen and bathroom. Top quality with little expense spared.

-The bed in the bedroom is very comfortable.

-The closet space in the small bedroom is spacious and large enough for your luggage.

-The pull-out bed was also comfortable for my 19yr old daughter.

-Parking was convenient and free

-Many cooking seasonings were included

-Nice to have detergent included with the washing machine

Opportunity for improvement:

-Lack of personal touch. We've stayed in places where there was a kind note to welcome the guest and a welcome basket with a few snacks. There was nothing that added a personal and welcoming touch. It would take a very small investment to have a big impact on welcoming the guest. A simple welcome basket could include something as simple as two coffee packs for the Kuerig machine, a single pack of microwave popcorn and a nice welcome note.

-Owner pushed strong for damage insurance plus a deposit. I get the deposit, but have never seen an insurance charge. I pushed back on the insurance, so my deposit was doubled.

-They charge a significant cleaning fee, but expect you to clean and put away the dishes upon check-out. On the day we checked out, we put the dishes in the dish washer, but did not have time to put them away. We received an email after we checked out reminding us that this was our responsibility (per the rental agreement) and that we could have had funds deducted from our deposit. Although we were not charged, I don't think it should have even been brought up. Why am I paying a cleaning fee if I have to clean and put all the dishes away, especially when many rentals charge less for cleaning and don't require you to clean and put away the dishes upon check out?

-Outdoor grill has aluminum foil just under the grill irons to keep the grill clean. However, the fire never reaches the food, so you do not get the grilled flavor. It's basically the same as baking the food.

-The location is good in terms of proximity to key areas, but the neighborhood is not the greatest.

Overall, the place was small, but very well put together with high end equipment. I'm just most disappointed with not feeling like a valued and welcomed customer. The dish situation really left a bad taste in my mouth!

Owner's Response: We wonder about the "personal touch" and "welcome customer" feeling that were reportedly lacking here. Was it the immediate, personal response by the owner to the last minute reservation request? Was it the discounted nightly rate? Was it the extra night offered (and taken) at half price? Was it the early check-in? The welcome email, text and call by our rental manager? Was it the cordial communications throughout? Was it the additional cleaning fees we absorbed that we didn't charge him for? Was it the comfortable beds? Was it the eco-friendly, costly amenities that we provide that few (if any) rentals do? We know our guests would have to spend a whole lot more on detergent, soaps, shampoo, paper products and cleaning products than coffee, and they don't want to carry that stuff. There are two cafés, restaurants and a grocery two blocks from the property -- why not check out the immediate neighborhood for a few minutes and get the coffee you like, as you like it? That said, we may add it, if others suggest. No, it was none of this. You know what it was? This guest left a big mess behind -- his "personal touch" -- our housekeeper complained and sent photos -- looked like a motor lodge room after a party -- and when it was politely brought to his attention by our rental manager, he was offended and gave us this rating and review. He feigns a sort of credibility and balanced perspective, but he casts a shadow on us, our property and the neighborhood. Didn't clean the grill either (we didn't mention it), but he complained about that, too. We do all laundry and clean top to bottom and ask two things -- run the dishwasher (or wash) and put away. Scrape/clean the grill after using so other guests at the villa can enjoy without having to clean first. That's it. Some folks see reviews and ratings as a means to retaliate or demonstrate their power. The vast majority of our guests are wonderful and we appreciate and enjoy interacting with them. Please read the other reviews. Peace out.

awesome location

  • 4 of 5

We stayed with our 9months old baby in the 1bedroom apartment. It was clean and very cozy perfect for a couple with or with out a baby. The first night we stayed there we had a gas leak. We called the management property and in less than an hour we had gas person came in and fixing the problem. The location of this place was perfect with a short car drive we were close to Zoo, Airport, Downtown, Sea World, and beaches. My favorite spot was the Mission Beach and Zoo.

My only recommendation to the owner of this place would be changing the chairs. They are scratching the nice hardwood floor a lot, we put towels under them to safe the floor it worked.

This was a great unit with a terrific location - easily accessible to exploring in San Diego. It was spotlessly clean, very modern, and comfortable. I would definitely stay again when in San Diego.

Great Location, Awesome Condo

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time in our unit and really enjoyed exploring San Diego! Everything in the condo was super clean and modern. Parking was easy. Owners and agent were extremely friendly and helpful. Would stay here again, although I think we'd rather just move to San Diego permanently!

Small but perfect for the price

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time in San Diego and I believe it had a lot to do with staying at our VRBO on Grim. First of all, great location. We could walk to get coffee in the morning and tacos in the afternoon. There was also a convenience store down the street where we bought eggs, wine and chocolate. Also, our VRBO was great. It had everything it advertised and was well equipped; from the towels, to the dishes, to the laundry detergent. So thank you for being so thorough with all our needs. Lastly, we thoroughly appreciated all the communication we received. We had an email telling us location, and easy access instructions for our apt, the parking garage and all other items in and around the property. We even had a follow-up to make sure everything was going as planned. As we do travel a lot, this really meant so much to us and ensured our return!
