Overview

Honokaa House Rental Photos and Description

3 bedrooms, 2 baths, ocean view with soothing trade winds.

A custom-designed home nestled among flowers and fruit trees at the end of a country lane. Here, you'll find all the conveniences, but no sign of tourism to detract from the charm of 'Old Hawaii'. Open decks, rather than closed hallways, connect the 'Great Room' (spacious living/dining/kitchen) to the bedrooms. The chef(s) can easily see and converse with their friends and family in the dining and living room areas. On a cool or rainy evening, the fireplace can be enjoyed from most areas of the Great Room. Walls in all rooms are adorned with original paintings and limited edition prints by Hawaiian artists. You can enjoy beautiful views and soft breezes from inside the house - especially the Great Room with its large expanses of glass - and from the open decks outside each guest room. When guests first arrive, they often say, 'the pictures don't do it justice', and 'It feels like a botanical garden sanctuary!'

About Dave

Young seniors in love with each other and this heavenly piece of land. For 20 years we have worked with the land to bring forth verdant vistas, abundant fruit and nut trees, meditative nooks, honoring the spirits of the generations who loved this land before us.

Dave purchased this house in 1994

Why Dave chose Honokaa

This land called out to us the first time we saw it. For a year, we lived in a tent where we could feel every breeze and hear each birdsong, while we designed a home to reflect the relaxed Hawaiian lifestyle while taking fullest advantage of the tradewinds and the stunningly beautiful view of the blue Pacific - two miles away but seemingly close enough to touch from our vantage point at 1,000 feet elevation where ii's rarely very hot or cold, but almost always 'just right'.

What makes this house unique

Clean air. Peace. Quiet. Serenity. Wild turkeys. Fragrant flowers. Twenty-two varieties of fruits you can pick and enjoy in season. Swaying palms. Colors everywhere, including just about every shade of green imaginable. Relaxation. Outdoor hot tub. Hawaii the way the ancients enjoyed it, but with up-to-date conveniences for your comfort.

Our return visit

  • 5 of 5

Dave and Sherry were there to welcome us again this year----as old friends! We were anxious to get reaquainted with the lovely grounds and home. We love the "outside" feel of this place. Quiet and peaceful. Did use and enjoy the privacy of the outside shower. Well stocked kitchen.

Spent one day taking the shuttle and tour to Waipo Valley. Also, shopped at the Waimea

Farmers' Market. Amazing fresh veggies and baked goods.

Appreciated the mosquito repellant----they "loved" me; ignored hubby!

The owners are very helpful and knowledgable about the area----make this property special.

Exceptional value for the cost!! Gorgeous and serene!

  • 5 of 5

Upon arriving the owners Dave and Sherry were present to greet us with a warm smile and warm attractive comforting energy.

the dog and horse were also present and were both a lot of fun. the owner of the horse was very nice and has quite a story regarding the life of the horse. interesting.

the horse became our buddy as she loves apples and papaya's.

upon entering the living room we were halted by the epic view of the ocean through floor to ceiling windows. and lots of them.

the house was spotless, the linens were new and the beds were comfortable.

the kitchen is highly functional and Dave was kind enough to drop off a new bag of great charcoal.

they accommodated us a day early which we were ever grateful for.

overall the house is in excellent shape and nicely built with a beautiful fireplace with granite hearth and mantle which we burned nice wood in each of the 6 nights we stayed .the furniture is quite comfortable.

the grounds were absolutely stunning. they are very well maintained. tons of grapefruit and other fruits.

the hot tub was very clean and nice-N-hot. the best part of the tub is the view of the ocean. the tub is located in a park like setting on a tiered hillside under elegant gorgeous palm trees. the pathway and tiers on the hillside were hand made by the owner of the horse. yep more great history from the horse fella.

we found Honoka'a very pleasant to walk through and the shop owners were super friendly. the local market had everything we needed.

we left some items behind by mistake. we called the owners, left a voicemail message in which they promptly returned our call. Dave was pleasantly motivated to ship the items back to us immediately. we were amazed by his gracious act and are grateful!

we slept extremely well. we heard only a couple of the Koki frogs however were just close enough to enjoy their beautiful songs.

Owner's Response: After enjoying this house as our home for years, we wanted to share its peaceful energy and beauty with others. We are always happy to know that the special magic of this "little piece of heaven" brings comfort and pleasure to our guests.

Wonderful is an understatement!

Dave, Sherry, Charlie the dog and Hoku the horse made our trip feel as though we were at home in Hawaii. The house was everything you could want and need and the grounds were amazing. We truly felt we could not find a more beautiful and welcoming spot. This was our 8th trip to HI and we could not be happier. We hope to see them all again soon!

Home away from home; peaceful and remote

  • 5 of 5

We spent 5 nights up in the hills above Honoka'a. Dave and Sherry were so welcoming and made our visit special, with a bowl of fresh fruit and fresh flowers, as well as a personalized welcome note, an in-person orientation, and fresh water in the hot tub. The home was well-stocked with linens, extra blankets, fire logs, a few basic foodstuffs, and great cooking equipment to whip up anything you'd like to. We loved to walk around the front yard and pick our own fruit (lemons, star fruit, grapefruit, oranges, bananas, and papayas), as well as enjoy the beautiful view. The stars were amazing at night sitting in the hot tub!! The home has a real tropical feel to it, as you need to go out the patio doors onto the lanai to reach the bedrooms and bathrooms from the main living area. There were a fair number of insects (mosquitoes), but it wasn't a real problem and the home has lots of bug sprays if you are bothered by the bites. We used this as a base for touring the area and spent some great days hiking in the Kalopa State Forest Reserve, exploring Honoka'a, savouring the view of the Wapio Valley, exploring Waimea, visiting the Hilo Wednesday morning Farmer's Market (AMAZING produce!!!), appreciating Akaka Falls, checking out the lava tube caves on the Old Mamalahoa Highway, and eating the most delicious freshly made scrumptious malasadas at Tex's (I'd recommend the mango and give the chocolate a miss). Honoka'a has a decent little grocery store and some neat antique shops, but definitely gas up in Hilo or Kona, where gas was at least $.45/gallon cheaper. We grew to love Dave and Sherry's house with its peaceful, natural setting, its laid-back feel, and a taste of living the good life in the Tropics. Mahalo! You definitely need a car to stay here.

Great Stay on the Big Island

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay in this beautiful home. The owners were welcoming and invited us to a house concert at their new home on top of the hill. We liked being on the quiet side of the island and enjoyed the small town atmosphere. Charlie the dog was a real joy and Hoka the horse got our carrots.
