BEAUTIFUL, QUIET, SECLUDED HOME WITH LOVELY VIEWS.

Honokaa House Rental Photos and Description

3 bedrooms, 2 baths, ocean view with soothing trade winds.

A custom-designed home nestled among flowers and fruit trees at the end of a country lane. Here, you'll find all the conveniences, but no sign of tourism to detract from the charm of 'Old Hawaii'. Open decks, rather than closed hallways, connect the 'Great Room' (spacious living/dining/kitchen) to the bedrooms. The chef(s) can easily see and converse with their friends and family in the dining and living room areas. On a cool or rainy evening, the fireplace can be enjoyed from most areas of the Great Room. Walls in all rooms are adorned with original paintings and limited edition prints by Hawaiian artists. You can enjoy beautiful views and soft breezes from inside the house - especially the Great Room with its large expanses of glass - and from the open decks outside each guest room. When guests first arrive, they often say, 'the pictures don't do it justice', and 'It feels like a botanical garden sanctuary!'

About Dave

Young seniors in love with each other and this heavenly piece of land. For 20 years we have worked with the land to bring forth verdant vistas, abundant fruit and nut trees, meditative nooks, honoring the spirits of the generations who loved this land before us.

Dave purchased this house in 1994

Why Dave chose Honokaa

This land called out to us the first time we saw it. For a year, we lived in a tent where we could feel every breeze and hear each birdsong, while we designed a home to reflect the relaxed Hawaiian lifestyle while taking fullest advantage of the tradewinds and the stunningly beautiful view of the blue Pacific - two miles away but seemingly close enough to touch from our vantage point at 1,000 feet elevation where ii's rarely very hot or cold, but almost always 'just right'.

What makes this house unique

Clean air. Peace. Quiet. Serenity. Wild turkeys. Fragrant flowers. Twenty-two varieties of fruits you can pick and enjoy in season. Swaying palms. Colors everywhere, including just about every shade of green imaginable. Relaxation. Outdoor hot tub. Hawaii the way the ancients enjoyed it, but with up-to-date conveniences for your comfort.

Amazing corner of paradise

  • 5 of 5
We rented this cottage for a week with our two adult daughters and six year old granddaughter. All of us just loved the house, the gardens and the peaceful setting. Our granddaughter especially loved the animals. The adults enjoyed walking around the property every morning and admiring the different fruit trees and flowers, relaxing in the evening in the hot tub. The cottage had everything you might ever need including boogie boards. The owners were so friendly and helpful. We would definitely rent again but for two weeks next time.

An absolute delight

  • 5 of 5
What a wonderful place this is, and what wonderful hosts too. Our original plans for staying down near Pahoa were washed away thanks to hurricane Iselle, but Dave and Sherry were more than willing to accommodate us at the last minute, and we are grateful for it. Of all the areas on Big Island, the Hamakua Coast turned out to be our favorite, and we really took to the tight-knit community feel of Honokaa, with its galleries and restaurants (although the local supermarket has everything you need for cooking in).

The house itself is great, the kitchen has everything you need and more, and the layout of the house is perfect with bedrooms on either side off the main living space. That allowed our daughters (9 and 12) their own feeling of freedom and gave us some space too.

Best of all, though, are the gardens and the views. I just enjoyed walking through them looking at the various tropical plants and fruit trees, and the girls enjoyed feeding the horse or throwing the ball for Charlie the super friendly dog. The night skies are terrific too, I saw the milky way clearly for the first time in years.

Waipio Valley is less than ten minutes up the road, Waimea less than half an hour, Hilo about an hour, and the beaches on the west side less than an hour (Hapuna being our favorite). All were easily reached with little fuss.

This review may sound over the top, but really, we had such a wonderfully relaxing time here that we're dreaming already of a return, this time for a longer stay. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Excellent

Everything was as described. Dave and Sherry were excellent hosts and quite helpful. I cannot say enough there. This is a great location that is away from the busy city. The location is quiet, peaceful and quite breathtaking. Easy driving between Kona and Hilo with plenty of activities and sightseeing in either direction. Overall, my wife and I had a wonderful time. We would highly recommend booking with Dave and Sherry.

Un très beau séjour en famille

  • 5 of 5

Peace and Beauty

  • 5 of 5
The 10 days we spent at your house was truley amazing. The lush yard with sweeping views of the Hamkua coast and it's everchanging dramatic sky brought us the disconnect and quiet we sought for our Hawaii vacation. Dave, you were an awesome host. Even though you had a new visitor (Peacock) that would have made a great pet, you were so thoughtful to remove him to another property to allow us to sleep without the nightly screech he brought with him. The house is set up perfectly...bedrooms on each side of the main room gave each couple the privacy one enjoys when on vacation. The Kitchen was supplied with all a cook could want. we even used the Macadamia nuts on the property to make choclate roasted delights! Found a great snorkel beach at the mana kea Hotel where you could enjoy a great lunch at poolside ans valet park you car. The town of Honokaa is a quiet little village with treasures from many stores. make sure if you visit this area to stop at Tex's for their famous Malasadas. A fruit filled pastry brought to Hawaii by the Potugese people.
Thank you for such a wonderful place where we could store up lasting memories!

Owner's Response: Aloha, and thank you! One of the great pleasures of offering our former home as a vacation rental has been the opportunity to meet special new friends from around the world, and to watch this special part of the island work its magic on them. This land called to us the first time we saw it, and we are delighted that our visitors also feel its special charm. As you have now discovered, the Big Island offers more to see and do, and more gratifying relaxation, than can possibly be packed into one trip... So we hope to see you again before too long!

We will return!

  • 5 of 5
Ahhhhh! The sound of my contented sigh as I think back to our 4 night stay in paradise. Every muscle relaxes as I remember the fun of the outdoor shower (we never used the 2 in the house), then hopping into the hot tub to soak up the garden & ocean view. With the screened doors & windows open all the time, it felt like living outdoors. Wandering the private yard/garden with a cuppa in the morning, in our bare feet and jammies. What a way to start the day! Percy the Peacock, Charlie the dog, Honu the horse ~ all made us welcome. The 2 main bedrooms are on opposite sides of the open concept kitchen/dining room/living room which makes it excellent for 2 couples travelling together. Kitchen was very well equipped. First thing we did was 4 loads of laundry. We picked up supper that 1st night at the grocery store in Honokaa, which was recommended by our hosts. Rightly so. I enjoyed reading the books stacked on the fireplace, on what to enjoy on the Big Island. The store to book ATV & horseback tours is just minutes down the road. So is Waipio Valley lookout. The best beaches on the Island are only 40 min. away. Waimea is a fun shopping trip and a lazy 20 min drive. While we loved everything about our 2 weeks on the Big Island, this was by far our favourite "home away from home". Thank you, Dave & Sherry. You have done an excellent job!!!
