STORY BOOK VINTAGE NORTHWOODS LODGE LOADED WITH CHARM & COMFORT

Hayward Cabin Rental Photos and Description

5 BR/3 Bath enchanting fairytale cottage with private beach & lots of fun

Runamuk Roost is a vintage log cabin lake home built in the style of a classic Northwood's lodge. Full of nostalgia and comfort, staying at Runamuk is like living in a story book world - a private lakeside cabin retreat that thrived in the early 20th century and in the memories of your grandparents and great grandparents. And although Runamuk is steeped in charm it is overflowing with resplendent luxuries and modern comforts such as climate control, air conditioning, Wi-Fi, cable TV, and full gourmet kitchen, etc. With its own private sandy beach just 75’ feet away, a level and unencumbered front lawn that flows right up to the lake, and location on a good fishing and swimming lake, Runamuk is perfect for multi-generational and multiple families including those with children and folks with limited mobility.

Just 10 miles south of Hayward, Wisconsin, Runamuk is set in the heart of the unspoiled forests of northwest Wisconsin on semi-secluded property that offers an array of unforgettable experiences and entertainment options. It is located 15 minutes from downtown Hayward where shopping, restaurants and an abundant entertainment options await. The lake we are on, Durphee, is a clean, sandy, gently sloping, 200 acre good fishing (walleye, bass, northern, perch, crappie, sunfish, etc.) and swimming lake with a public boat access.

Runamuk has 5 bedrooms that comfortably sleep 10. It also has 3 full baths, a fully outfitted and large kitchen, an outdoor patio area, a large indoor dining area, a screened lakeside porch, a fire ring with seating just near the water’s edge, and on-sight washer and dryer.

Your stay at Runamuk includes linens, towels, firewood, gas grill, a private pier, canoe, swim raft, and on-sight power & pontoon boat rental with an optional end-of-stay cleaning service. It is located on a low-traffic dead-end road. Our neighborhood is safe, quiet and perfect for walks, dog-walking, biking, etc. (dogs are welcome but there’s a pet fee).

Runamuk is approximately 3 hours from Minneapolis, 4 hours from Madison & Green Bay, 5 hours from Milwaukee and 6 hours from Chicago. It is located on Durphee Lake, a clean, quiet and excellent 200 acre fishing lake that has its own public boat landing and is big enough for power water craft but small enough to keep traffic and noise to a minimum. We are also near many restaurants, shops, golf courses, mini-golf courses, and go-kart track and are kid and pet friendly.

Here's additional information concerning our vacation rental facilities:

Sleeping Arrangements (bedrooms):

Runamuk Roost's 5 bedrooms are configured as follows: 3 bedrooms with double beds that can sleep 2 people, 1 bedroom with 2 twin beds that can each sleep 1, and 1 bedroom that has a king-sized bed that can easily sleep 2. There are 3 bedrooms on the main floor and 2 upstairs. In total it can sleep up to 10 people in beds and has 2 full baths on the main floor and 1 full bath on the upper floor.

Cooking & Dining in:

If you decide to eat-in, the home has a fully-equipped kitchen and dining area that can seat 10 + guests. It also has a center island and snack bar which you can use as a buffet and/or seating for more people. Aside from the usual appliances we also include the dishes, utensils, pots and pans, towels, cloths, etc. you will need. There is also a picnic table, outdoor patio, coffee grinder, an outside gas grill (we provide the propane) and an outdoor fire-ring perfect for grilling, roasting, or making s'mores (we include the firewood).

Interior Living, Relaxation & Gathering Spaces:

Runamuk Roost has a comfortable main floor living room complete with an indoor stone gas log fireplace, cable TV, Apple TV, Netflix and cozy sitting areas. The room is full of antiques, vintage decorations, and overlooks the lake.

Our original stone fireplace was converted to gas logs so it simply takes a second to get a beautiful and romantic fire going. Just sit back and relax as you visit with friends, talk, play board game or watch TV while watching the glowing flames. And just so everyone can have their “space”…on the upper floor there’s a second TV located in its own private cozy loft – perfect for kids and their video games.

Our tasteful and roomy screened porch overlooks the water and is perfect for reading, watching the kids on the beach, or conversation. The cabin and porch face west offering a stunning and panoramic sunsets as well as amazing star-gazing in the light-pollution-free northern sky.

Outside at Runamuk:

Aside from its own private secluded beach and dock, Runamuk’s grounds include a fire-ring located near the water’s edge, lawn furniture, bench swing, gas grill (we provide the propane), canoe, and life jackets, swim raft, flag stone patio with picnic table, etc. We’ll even provide the fire wood so you and your group can enjoy a charming camp-fire.

Our beach and lakefront lawn are nearly level and flow right up to the home which is just 75’ from the water’s edge. There are just two steps from the main floor to the lawn. Runamuk has a sandy swimming beach, sandy bottom, and our lake has a gentle sloping bottom. At the end of our dock it’s about 4’ deep. Durphee Lake is excellent for pan fishing right off the dock or out in your fishing boat. It’s big enough for power boats and jet skis (personal water craft) but quiet and low-traffic enough to enjoy the great outdoors. Be sure and ask about our pontoon or fishing boat rental to augment your stay.

Housekeeping, Linens, Towels, etc.:

Along with the fully-equipped kitchen we will provide dish washing & dishwasher soap, trash bags, outside large – capacity trash can, paper towels, kitchen towels, bath and beach towels, etc., as well as all linens. Guests can either choose our “Cleaning Service Option” (check with us for current pricing) or, if they wish to save money, “Self-Clean”. Those who self-clean are asked to clean the house (clean the bath, trash removal, dust, sweep floors, clean the dishes and kitchen, vacuum rugs, police the grounds, etc., before they leave but we take care of washing dirty sheets, towels, etc. We ask our guests to put dirty linens in the provided hampers and to remove dirty sheets, pillow cases, etc. but leave them on the beds.

If you’re the type of person who hates to come home to tackle a pile of laundry, Runamuk also has its own washer/dryer. Guests are free to use these. We’ll also provide detergent.

I love the Hayward, Wisconsin area and I adore our unbelievably charming cabin, Runamuk Roost. Runamuk helps me recall the fond memories of my boyhood cabin. Warm summer days of swimming, fishing and swimming with grandpa and grandma, mom and dad, cousins, siblings, friends, etc. Campfire sing alongs, roasting marshmallows, and talking with family and friends around the fire. You know: the good old days.

Now that I am grown up I wanted to always keep that memory alive. That's why we bought Runamuk. It's the perfect design, on the perfect lot, in the perfect location, on the perfect lake.

Half vintage log cabin lodge and half-bungalow, our home, Runamuk Roost, was built in the early 1960s as a small hunting cabin. Because the original structure was so full of charm, as we added on and renovated, we built around Runamuk rather than simply tear it down and start over. Throughout we tried to maintain the underlying design and character of the property by matching things like stain, varnish, woodwork design, etc. We also tried to stay true to the vintage feel of the original Runamuk by using locally harvested wood and quarried stone, all hand-crafted by local tradesmen.

Inside Runamuk there are many special items. Some have been in our family for a long time while others have been acquired not so long ago but are themselves antiques or special. They include things such as a real “moose leg” lamp made from a moose my father-in-law shot. The animal pelts scattered around are from the local Hayward, Wisconsin area and the fish mounts are from those we pulled right out of the lake less than 200 yards from the living room.

I am proud to say that my wife, Joan, did the re-design of Runamuk as well as all the decorating. Suffice to say she is very talented. Runamuk was certainly one of her favorite projects to do.

Jim purchased this cabin in 1993

Runamuk and the surrounding area are incredibly beautiful, awe-inspiring and loaded with unique and fun activities and adventures. You can swim, dive, fish, bike, canoe, boat, eat in or out, golf, mini-golf, go-kart, shop, shoot shotguns, rifles and pistols, see bear, deer, beavers, eagles, elk, bobcat, etc.

Our lake, Durphee, is, in my opinion, the perfect size lake. At 200 acres it's big enough to water ski, tube, jet ski, boat, etc but not so bit that it's full of traffic. While it's not the biggest lake, there's plenty of room to waterski, jet ski, operate larger boats. Best of all it's not crowded but rather quiet, clean, sandy and loaded with fish.

The lot is perfect. There's undeveloped property all around us providing nice seclusion. The neighborhood is quiet and good for walking, biking, etc. Our property is level and has an unobstructed view of the lake.

I think Runamuk is one of the most beautifully designed, charming, well-built and superbly decorated homes in the area. It's historic and nostalgic setting is truly like stepping back 100 years in time. However it's still a home where we want to live in comfort. It has, therefore, all the modern comforts like air conditioning, heat, full kitchen, internet, cable, etc.

Runamuk is the most charming, well decorated, and comfortable homes around. We're located on the best fishing, swimming, boating, lake around. It's clean, sandy, and gently sloping. The fishing is great right off the dock. Our lot is near level and you have a nice, level lot that's 75' from the beach to the home.

We're on a quiet, dead-end road in a beautiful neighborhood that's perfect for walking, biking, etc. We're just 6 hours from Chicago and 3 from Minneapolis. Our lot is large, wooded, secluded and set back from the road.

In many ways it’s just like having your very own resort with a private beach & dock (pier) on a nice sandy swimming and fishing lake.

We have a huge kitchen, nice-sized and comfortable bedrooms and an awesome living/great room with a beautiful fireplace. Our rates include lots of extras like firewood, propane for the gas grill, a cool fire-ring, linens, towels, cleaning supplies, fully stocked kitchen, etc.

Runamuk is highly affordable and chock full of incredible charm. It is spacious, comfortable and entertaining for people of all ages.

It is located close to major airports (MSP and ORD)

There’s lots of wildlife around as well as exhilarating and fun activities for guests of all ages. Many activities can only be found or experienced in this part of the world where we have four distinct seasons, lots of space, huge forests, glacial lakes and rivers, and an extensive motorized and non-motorized trail system.

We are pet friendly, have on-sight fishing and pontoon boat rental, guiding, and guests who stay with us also get special deals on ATV and snowmobile power sports excursions offered through Runamuk Rides. If you have ever wanted to live the adventure of driving off-road machines through miles and miles of trails, this is it.

A CHARMED PARADISE

  • 5 of 5
Every peasure needed for a positivley amazing northwoods paradise was provided. Quality modern conveniences and attention to detail were evident everywhere. (Even had marshmellow roasters for the fire pit). In a year that produced hoards of mosquitos, owners used great measures to insure no pests swarmed on their property which was an amazing feat providing great nights at the fire pit. Not a thing was overlooked in providing for our comfort and satisfaction. Mega thanks to the owners!

A FUN FAMILY WEEK!

  • 5 of 5
We stayed at Runamuk for five nights with 7 adults and 4 kids under the age of 6, and the accomodations were perfect for our group. The cabin is absolutely beautiful- even better than the photos online. The kitchen was a great size for all of us to gather, cook and eat in, and very well stocked with anything that we could possibly need. We also appreciated the nicely appointed bathrooms and all of the extra towels and beach towels. Outside, the large, private yard was great for the kids to play in, and we loved having big bonfires in the fire pit every night. Fishing off of the dock, as other reviewers had commented on, did not disappoint. We caught a ton of panfish and a few smallmouth bass without much of an effort at all! The sand bottom lake is very shallow a long way out, so that was ideal for little kids. They had a blast!
Aside from some stormy weather, I can't think of a single thing to complain about. We had a great time and will definitely be back to stay here again. Thanks to Jim and Joan for sharing their amazing property with the rest of us!!!

IDEAL CABIN

  • 5 of 5
The owner, Jim, was wonderful to deal with. He made sure we had everything we needed. He even checked in with us to make sure there were no problems. The cabin is absolutely beautiful, and well taken care of. There was plenty of good fishing around the lake as well as off the dock. My entire family was impressed with the entire vacation at Runamuk, and there were 13 of us, ranging from 4 years old to 60. Usually we rent a different cabin each year, but after the wonderful experience we had this year we have been considering just coming here for the next one! Can't say enough good things! Jim, thanks so much for sharing your cabin with us.

Runamuk Roost is set in the heart of the unspoiled forests of northwest Wisconsin. From its alluring setting, to its classic vintage design, to its enchanting and tasteful adornments, Runamuk sets the tone for a remarkable vacation.

Just 11 miles from Hayward, Wisconsin Runamuk Roost is at the epicenter of a northwoods vacation getaway. The entire region is teeming with shops, restaurants, resorts and an ample selection of activities and entertainment options suitable for all ages. Enjoy the delicacies and entertainment offered by the street vendors at the many festivals and fairs the region is famous for. Visit any one of the many one-of-a-kind resorts, taverns and restaurants and sample delectable versions of trout, steak, hamburgers and pizza. Most venues are reasonably priced and offer some of the best and friendliest service around.

For the shopper…there are a multitude of antique and other types of quaint shops throughout the little towns and villages that dot the northwest Wisconsin landscape. Whether you are antiquing, scrap booking, craft or clothes shopping, the charming main streets of these boroughs offer something special for everyone.

Nearby activities include hundreds of miles of recreational trails, shopping, antiquing, wine tasting, championship & executive golf courses, lots of mini-golf courses, ice cream and home-made candy shops, canoeing, tubing, zoo, go-karting, the Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame and Lumberjack Village where you can shop and catch a world-famous lumberjack demonstration show.

There are also many things to do right at Runamuk Roost. Picnics, yard games, campfires, swimming, sun bathing on our swim platform or beach, quiet walks, beach combing, snorkeling, fishing, boating, canoeing, biking, sand castle building, tubing, water skiing, boating, roasting marshmallows, etc. are just a few. Star gaze at night through a telescope or simply sit and relax by a fire or grill. Indoors you can play board games, read, visit with friends around the fire in the stone fireplace, watch a movie or TV, surf the internet or sit around and relax with nothing to do and no cares.

Runamuk Roost also runs a power sports ranch called Runamuk Rides (runamukrides.com). Runamuk Rides operates a fleet of All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) and snowmobiles. You can either rent and explore the region on your own or book one of our guided tours. Accompanied by one of our trail guides, guests can ride one of our machines over a trail system that circumnavigates over a thousand miles of some of the most beautiful trails in the world.

Aside from the sheer thrill of riding on one of our machines you’ll get a chance to see forests, streams, lakes, rivers and wildlife from a perspective seldom experienced elsewhere. Bear, deer, wolf, bobcats, and eagles are just some of the animals that populate the region. We offer 2, 4, full day and multiday programs.
