Paradise is BEACHFRONT on the Northeast Shore/Ka‘a’awa
This is Hawaii as you dreamed… this spectacular oceanfront Polynesian cottage must be seen to be believed. Located between Turtle Bay Resort and Kaneohe Bay on the northeast shore of Oahu this stretch of pristine white sand beach is enfolded in the arms of the Koolau Mountain range, and stretches 300 feet before you reach another home.
This home was completely rebuilt, a beautifully appointed one bedroom, one bath plantation style home features a folding door system that opens the entire front of the home to the dining deck that is inches from the sea. The tropical living area is enhanced by an attractive woven bamboo ceiling and ceiling fans. Take a moonlight swim and shower in comfort in our outdoor hot water shower, under the stars.
There is one double pune'e (Hawaiian style sofa/sleeping daybed) and a single pune'e in the living area, and a king in the bedroom complete with feather bed for maximum comfort.
All linens for the kitchen, bedroom, bath and beach are supplied as well as a nice compliment of amenities such as soaps, shampoos, etc. There is a washer/dryer on the property for your use.
The fully equipped kitchen has beautiful granite countertops, nice appliances, and is fully stocked with cooking, serving and kitchen aids as well as spices and general use refrigerator items.
The view from the deck is a sight to behold through the coconut trees to one of Oahu’s most identifiable historic landmarks, Chinaman’s Hat Island. This site is where the great Polynesian Voyaging canoe, Hokule'a, was first launched in 1976, proving that the Polynesians did indeed navigate by the stars from the South Pacific, first reaching the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) from over 2400 miles around 400 AD.
Can we describe our beach that stretches the length of a football field in one direction and in the other you can walk several miles through Kualoa State Park to the site of a huge ancient Hawaiian fishpond. Watch spectacular sunrises from the deck, sunbathe on the beach or watch the divers and fishermen and perhaps try your hand at “catching dinner local style”. You can see turtles, rays and the occasional surfer from the deck or snorkel in our coral preserve.
Right in front of the house is a lovely 'menehune' fish pond which is a delight to everyone, especially to the little ones at low tide.
The atmosphere is country, but you are close to restaurants and conveniences, and 30 minutes from Honolulu. Located minutes away from world famous North Shore attractions such as the Hauula hiking trails, the Polynesian Cultural Center, Turtle Bay Resort and Golf Course, Sunset Beach, Waimea Bay and some of the last unspoiled Hawaiian style towns on Oahu. A little inside information for you golfers … the nearby Kuhuku Golf Course where half the holes on this municipal course have an ocean view starts at $20 for green fees and it goes down from there!
Directly across the street is the 4,000 acre, magnificent Kualoa horse ranch offering trail rides, jungle tours, and Paniolo (Hawaiian) BBQ’s, or just visit the beautiful horses at your back door. The ranch has been the site of many movies including 'Jerrasic Park' and 'King Kong' and Lost. You can see this stunning property on the ranch movie set tours.
As with many oceanfront homes, the road that circles the island is located behind the house and may provide some traffic noise at different times of the day.
E KOMO MAI (You're welcome) We look forward to seeing you soon...

I am a Keiki O Ka Aina, translated as a child of this land as my ancestories migrated here from the South Pacific centries ago and became the first native people. I have a history with this unimaginably beautiful site as my Grandfather and Great grandfather before him fished here.
The feeling of PARADISE is ohana(family)beauty, music and warmth. You will almost be able to hear the sounds of my Hawaiian trio, KUALIOA (the name for this area)as we play music by the sea. You will relax, be refreshed and feel you belong here and never want to leave. Coming back will feel like coming home... E Komo Mai (Welcome)
Hanakaulani Holt Thompson purchased this house in 2005
I was driving around the island with visitors and we spotted a 'For Sale' sign on the beach. ...ONE STEP on the sand and we were awestruck by the incredible beauty of KUALOA!
The sacred legend of these mountains... Hawaiian warriors always tip their paddles as they go by KUALOA as this is where their great chiefs (Ali'i) are buried.
THIS IS THE PLACE, PARADISE!
PARADISE is located almost exactly in the center of the island, and although you are close to stores, restaurants, Kaneohe town and all the creature comforts, you are across the street from Kualoa Ranch, a 4,000 acre working cattle and excursion ranch.
K'a'a'awa is 'being in the country' for 'locals' because it has that special relaxed Hawaiian feeling. You can easily reach almost anywhere on the island from PARADISE as it is about halfway between the North Shore and Waikiki. Guests say that they have to force themselves to get out and see the sights because nothing compares to their experience in PARADISE!
What a great house! I love the folding doors so much I sleep in the living room - the better to see and smell the ocean. I had my best snorkeling out front- beautiful corrals, colorful fish and very impressive turtles. Peter
You have an excellent library...I enjoyed reading the nevel "Ka'a'awa"l
We absolutely enjoyed this tropical paradise retreat! We felt luck to have found this beach cottage, and it truly made our trip to Hawaii one of our best. We hope to return someday...and highly recommend!
- Your own private beach in your backyard...bring aqua socks so you can wade in the shallow waters.
- Lanai living...the floor to ceiling windows open up so you're always looking at the water.
- Great outdoor space...we enjoyed our breakfast coffee just watching/listening to the water...and laid out and swam to enjoy the beach by day...and by night, enjoyed the moon shining over the water.
- Gorgeous views of the Chinaman's Hat, beaches and lush mountain-scapes.
- Marillyn, the owner, was extremely responsive.
- The cottage is along the highway, so you can hear cars driving by at times. You may want to bring earplugs if you're a light sleeper.
I wanted to say that it was truly a BLESSING to be able to stay at this home it was everthing mentioned and then some. I will say this was truly the bset time we had on any beach front rentals. Thanlk you for allowing us to stay.
*Our family of five has been traveling the world together for years. We prefer small cottages or apartments to hotels, and avoid "resorts" like the plague. Our oldest son had just completed a two-month California Maritime Academy training cruise which crisscrossed the Pacific, so we met him at the dock in Honolulu and immediately left the crowds of Waikiki behind and headed to the Windward side.
*Hana was terrific in communicating when we booked the property. We recognized the proximity of the house to the highway, but knew we'd be up each morning at sunrise for coffee and photos, and can sleep through anything (try staying in an apartment in central Rome!) With windows open and the main folding door partially open at night, the summer temperature was pleasant, the breeze constant, and sleeping came easy.
*The kitchen was more than sufficient, we cooked and enjoyed all our breakfasts and dinners at the house (usually outside on the lawn), while sampling lunches at various roadside stands, trucks, and cafes. Giovanni's Shrimp Truck in Kahuku was a favorite.
*We borrowed the snorkeling gear and boogie boards stored under the deck, and spent countless hours in the warm, clear water right off the property. The area between the beach and outlying reef is safe, and suited to all levels of snorkelers. We saw green sea turtles, puffer fish, moray eels, and numerous species of butterfly fish.
*The onsite laundry was a blessing, as was the outside shower. With a helper to open and shut the gate, parking was a breeze.
*When the trades brought the occasional shower (some in the afternoon, others just after sunset), we would temporarily shut the main folding door, as well as the bedroom window. The rain always came in directly from the ocean, lasted a few minutes, then ended as quickly as they began. Open the windows again, head back to the deck with a Kona Longboard in hand, and resume seagazing and conversation.
*Using the cottage as a base, we explored 2/3 of the island in a week, from Hanauma Bay to Haleiwa. We ventured back into Honolulu only to visit the USS Arizona Memorial (very moving), as well as the Bishop Museum (first rate). We also climbed the nearby Crouching Lion trail, with great views of Kahana Bay.
*For travelers wishing to unwind, unplug, and slow down, Paradise in Ka'a'awa is the place.
*Bumper stickers in the area plead to "Keep the Country Country," and now we know why.
*Many mahalos, Hana, we'll be back...
Our family of 5 stayed here for 1 out of 2 weeks of our vacation on Oahu. We were very pleased when we arrived, it was absolutely stunning and the views all around are to die for. The cottage was well stocked and it had everything we needed. The one downside to this rental was all of the creatures we had to share it with. A small gecko crawled down my husbands shirt within about 5 minutes of us being there. We all had a good laugh about it but we very quickly realized that there was a huge nest of them living in the roof. There were bigger ones and tons of tiny baby ones running around the house. We constantly watched them run across the floor and up the wall into the roof. They loved to hide in the bamboo like curtains and every time we unrolled them a few would fall out. They make a "barking" noise at night and it startled me awake so many times I slept horribly the whole week we were there. After a sleepless night of listening to the geckos and having one crawl on my pillow followed by the roosters waking our 3 little kids up at 5am we seriously considered cutting our losses and getting a hotel. Our last 2 days we also encountered quite a few huge cockroaches, we were definitely ready to get out of there by our last day which was really to bad. I do understand now (after doing some research) that gecko's are common in houses to get rid of the other pests which is why I am still giving a 5 star review, but we would not stay again. We have stayed at a few other houses right on the beach on the north shore and we have had a few critters, which we totally expected but this was just way to much for us. If that type of thing doesn't bother you then it is probably the perfect place, but I do feel that people should be aware of all the little critters they will be sharing the cottage with so they can make an informed decision as if this property is right for them.
My family and I go to Oahu almost every year. This was the first year we stayed away from Waikiki and absolutely loved it! My husband and I will never stay anywhere else. I was worried my teen girls would get bored but they loved it so much they didn't fight once - ALL Week! The ocean is rocky, not sandy but you can go in with shoes and it makes kayaking amazing! Within 5 miles to softer ocean floors. The owner of this home keeps everything you will need in and out of the house. She has kayaks, boogie boards, etc. It was amazing. The views are awesome day and night! Leave your doors open and enjoy the night breeze in the living room/bedroom area. My husband and I swapped rooms with the kids so we could be in the room with the open doors. My family loved the outdoor shower. The owner made herself available to assist us with everything we need. Make sure you call her if you have questions as we would have missed out on a washer, dryer, and water toys if we hadn't. The house isn't huge but the way it is set up, we spent almost all day outside in the yard and beach! You have to rent a car for this spot but you won't regret it!
Beautiful Kualoa Ranch is located on 4,000 acres directly
across from the cottage. There are a myriad of activities to include horseback riding, ATV tours, bus movie set tours, restaurant and much more!
Journey to the Valley of the Temples and see the Buddhist temple and environs.
Drive 2 miles to Kualoa Park and walk to the ancient
Hawaiian Fish Pond and see Secret Beach.
