This cabin is centrally located for visiting Blowing Rock, Boone, Lenoir & Leatherwood, plus many NC waterfalls, parks, hiking, biking, riding ATVs or riding your horse! Your own home away from home, this mountain will welcome you after a day of sight-seeing or visiting local events and riding the Tweetsie Railroad!
Tweetsie is one of our renters favorite places to visit and is very accessible from our home!
This home is a joy for families & pets alike! Spacious & homey, with pine paneling throughout. Parents with small children LOVE the gated, covered wrap-around deck, as do dog owners.
The Cabin is situated in the Deer Crossing Community, just off of state road Sampson, on Little White Rock Mountain, near the boundary of Watauga and Wilkes counties. Rain or shine, the views from the cabin are incredible, esp. in the fall or when the mist moves over the treetops.
The distance from the home to the Blue Ridge Parkway is 7 mi, 9 mi to Blowing Rock city limits, 11.6 miles to Tweetsie Railroad, 13.5 miles to Boone, 13.5 mi to App Skiing, 13.1 miles to Kilwins for ice cream, 15.5 miles to great food at Daniel Boone Inn and a visit to App State, Mystery Hill 13.5, Tanger Outlets shopping 12.2, 6.1 miles to horseback riding or fishing at Leatherwood (Ferguson)!
Note: There is 6 miles of gravel road from the home to the one mile paved section that connects to the parkway at Aho. It takes us 18 minutes to traverse this. But you might be rewarded with wildlife sightings! Each time we travel the road, we see Deer, wild turkeys and we even saw a bear! Sampson is a typical mountain road with curves but the scenery is tremendous!
Once you have paid the deposit, I will send all the info that you need to access the home, plus amenities and info for the surrounding area.
Our guests love that we furnish so many things in the cabin. They all say that you only need to bring your meals and yourselves. Everything else is there. We take pride in making our guests feel welcome. The views are amazing and there is lots to do in and around the home. The property is wooded and nature is only a few feet from the home. The community is great for walking, for your comfort out and about, we have a can of Off! in the laundry room cabinet. Note, if you are hiking in less traveled paths in the woods, you should wear long pants and before coming into the home, brush them off, park muddy boots outside the door, or you could inadvertently bring in unwanted guests!
Our guests do spelunking at Linville Caverns, hike & boat at Julian Price Lake along the Parkway, white water raft at Wahoo, bike on Railroad Grade rd then tube at Todd while others do some fishing & horseback riding at Leatherwood. Some guests have found Wilson Creek to be well suited for canoeing and hiking.
There are directions to these locations in the binder just inside the home. You can take one of the pages out, go on your adventure then return the page to the binder for the next visitor. The Blue Ridge Parkway area has many Birding sites. One is located at Julian Price Memorial Park and another is located at Elk Knob near Todd. Check out North Carolina Birding Trail org for more info!
There are wonderful long range layered mountain views from the deck, upstairs balcony and from inside the living room.
We have 4 bedrooms, 2 upstairs bedrooms each with a balcony, that come with two double beds that share one bathroom, the master and basement bedrooms have a queen bed and ensuite bathroom. All linens and towels are bleached in preparation for your arrival. The master will be made up for you, but the remainder of sheets will be left out for you to choose the bed in the room that suits you.
You will enjoy preparing meals in the well equipped kitchen and grilling on the huge gas grill. Everything you need is at hand! For those not helping in the meal preparation, there is WIFI, PC games & loads of things to check out on the internet. If you find something new & different, like looking for precious stones, print the location directions on the printer to take with you. We hear western NC is a fabulous place for that kind of thing. Good luck mining!
Later, watch Satellite TV, get on the internet or watch a movie. For that romantic touch, turn on the fireplace with the remote, watch the flames & pulsating embers, while enjoying the long range layered mountain views.
After a day of hiking, you may want to wash your duds, then play a rousing game of Pool, Darts or Foosball. For the family that enjoys various activities, we have 3 DVD players, 2 TVs, & a large basement with space for games (a 3rd TV and VHS player can be placed in any of the upstairs bedrooms, but please put back in the basement before you leave). Some of the guests have named the basement 'The Kid Zone'.
The home is great for reading & relaxing. It is so quiet & peaceful. Or just sit & do nothing on one of the 4 swings on the covered & gated, wrap around deck. So many things to enjoy!
This lovely home has features for everyone! Fabulous views and wonderful breezes! The home is very welcoming, decorated with horse prints, photos of Italy & includes some of the photography of a local artist Margaret Denny. We have several antiques in the home that you will enjoy. The antique dining table has several leaves, allowing it to seat 1-8 comfortably. Check out the coffee table, read the inside! There is also an antique book that is fun to page through.
Outside the home, you'll find a reflection bench, a swing surrounded by daffodils in season with long range views. There is a fenced dog run for your favorite pooches, but can accommodate 2 horses (that get along well).
Bring your ATV, your cycling, canoeing or fishing gear, the pull through drive way accommodates 5 or more cars, or car & trailer (motorcycle, canoe, horse or 4 wheeler).
There are multiple bird feeders next to the home, come watch the birds! A small supply of bird seed is provided in a black can on the deck, or bring your own. We also have sugar to make food for the two Hummingbird feeders (during the summer)! Feeders are located in the shed, along with a spare tank of gas for the grill.
This secluded home has irises, daffodils, mountain laurel & rhododendrons. The night time views are spectacular, with the stars so close you think you can touch them. We have a star book to help you identify constellations, plus a pair of binoculars.
Just off the parkway, the kids will enjoy Tow-Mader in Coffeytown. It's fun to see that character where you'd never expect it! We recently spotted it at a gas station after you turn off of Aho road onto 321. He gets around!
You will love your day trip to laid back Blowing Rock, Kilwins ice cream shop is a must do, as is Tweetsie for the kids (April-Nov). Boone is famous for App state & Mast General Store, plus, Daniel Boone Inn, where the food is terrific! We like to stop in at Earth Fare for organic or other health foods. Don't worry, buy what you want & protect it in one of the Styrofoam coolers. Or, take one with you on a day trip to keep sandwiches & drinks cool. You can even take one of the Styrofoam coolers home with you, we have 4 and often bring up replacements.
There are guide books at the home to find the less-traveled hiking paths along the Blue Ridge Parkway and the locations of waterfalls in the area.
This is truly THE place to unplug from the hustle and bustle of life! Just you & nature & your loved ones!
We have granite countertops now, hardwood flooring, new carpeting & flooring in the basement. You and your party are very important to us, so we try to make the home comfy & inviting with everything you need.
Our guests have found 2 other routes that are 80-90% paved, but are not as direct as Sampson. You may choose the route that suits you! Our home is in the mountains and is accessible via well maintained State gravel roads. You need no special vehicles to access the home and drive at a speed that suits you. If traveling down any mountain roads in the Blue Ridge range, if you feel like you're going too fast (this is relative to each driver's experience), put your vehicle in 2nd gear and use the brake pumping technique (press brake, take your foot off the brake, press brake again etc.) This is especially true when pulling a trailer. Sampson is not a steep road, but if you've never driven on mountain roads, keep this in mind, even when traveling the parkway and especially when heading east out of Boone down 421.
We ask guests with dogs (regardless of their type of coat) to vacuum any carpeted rooms that they enter. We provide and ask that you use sheets to cover furniture as they can leave hair and dander on furniture, this also helps other guests who have pet allergies. Otherwise we require 50$ pet fee as it takes our crew that much longer to clean up after guests with pets.
Future improvements: Wilkes Telecommunications has laid cable in our community. This new cable, when the hook up is complete, will give us high speed internet. though we have wifi, internet, email and other services, the download speed is not fast enough for Netflix or the like. We do have a large selection of DVDs, or you can bring your own.
In the mountains, any cellphone coverage is very spotty, especially traveling the Parkway. Keep this in mind while away from the home. At the home, we have a network extender that allows Verizon phones to work. Other cellphones may work at the top of the hill just past our property (reported to me by past renters).
Again, thanks for your interest in our home and Welcome!

Guestbook comments from the owner
Rained the first day but mostly perfect! We explored, went to Tweetsie, had a blast there, came back and roasted hotdogs and smores, so delicious! We met a deer with tiny antlers, a flock of wild turkeys and chipmunks running around the road. We mostly relaxed! Tweetsie was my favorite moment as we had a blast with family!

My husband is an avid cyclist and I love to ride my paint horse. We love our family and friends and love to entertain them and have fun! This is a vacation home, our main residence is in Pleasant Garden, NC.
We were relocated to NC from Illinois, where we both grew up. I'm originally from Sandy Springs GA. We met over a pitcher of beer after a softball game and have been together now for over 24 years. My husband is so much fun to be with and we love it here in NC. My son and his wife live in Oregon, Wisconsin, a very long distance for a mom to endure! We love our visitors and will go to the nth degree to make your stay wonderful!
We chose this property because it accommodated both our interests! For my husband, the proximity to the Blue Ridge Parkway and all the cycling opportunities it offered, the cooler temps of the mountains and the ability to keep my horse at the property and sometimes trailer the 6.1 miles to Leatherwood for a day of riding. Plus we really love the mountain area. The photo shown here is of a day trip we took to Elk Knob. Elk Knob has a 1.9 mile hiking path to the heavens with heavenly views!
The biggest benefit of this home is that it is very quiet. It has wonderful mountain views, is spacious enough for the whole family so that everyone can do what they please without impacting the others. Proximity to Leatherwood is a real plus! 10$ and a coggins gets you a full day of trail riding! Another sensational feature of the home is the gated wrap around deck. There are 4 swings that allow you to take in the views, the breezes and the pond with waterfall. A favorite is the upstairs bedrooms with private decking. Sit and read or gaze out at the long range views from the back bedroom, or listen to the waterfall below from the front bedroom. The main floor master has access to the deck and has an ensuite bathroom. The basement bedroom has an ensuite bathroom, yet is private. Home includes washer and dryer. The views can be shared from the living room with a french door leading to the deck. With all the windows open, there is rarely a day you need to turn on the AC, but it is at the ready. The home has a wonderful wood stove in the basement and a wall heater, plus an extra refrigerator for those times you have guests for meals. The fenced in paddock will accommodate a horse or your favorite pooch! Also, featuring photography and music by VividPeace.com (Margaret Denny and Jim Pearson) See their site for photos.
