Welcome!

Our home is a joy for families & pets alike, spacious & homey, it has pine paneling throughout. Parents with small children LOVE the gated, covered wrap-around deck, as do dog owners (Pet fee is $35 charge). Rain or shine, the views are incredible, esp. in the fall or when the mist moves over the treetops.

We furnish so many things in the cabin. Guests say that you only need to bring your meals & yourselves. Everything else is there. We pride ourselves in making our guests feel at home!

The views are amazing & there are many things to do in & around the home. There are wonderful long range layered mountain views from the deck, upstairs balcony & from inside the living room.

The home is ideal for:

2 routes to 321 (Blowing Rock or Boone):

1) Quickest:

a) Right out of Deer Crossing

b) Sampson to the Parkway (right on parkway)

c) Left on Aho which dead ends on 321 (left to BR, right to Boone)

Notes: State road Sampson includes 6 miles of gravel from the home to the one mile paved section that connects to the parkway at Aho. Trip time is 18-24 minutes. Benefits include quicker travel time to attractions, outstanding scenery, wildlife sightings of Deer &/or wild turkeys.

2) Minimum gravel:

a) Take Sampson (turn left out of Deer Crossing) to Elk Creek road (right on Elk Creek)

b) Then take Buffalo Cove road to highway 268, then to 321. Benefits include mostly paved roads except for Sampson; trip is longer to reach attractions.

Once you have paid the deposit, you will receive all the info that you need to access the home, local amenities & info for attractions.

The property is wooded & nature is a few feet away. The community is great for walking. Note, if you are hiking less traveled wooded paths, wear long pants & before coming into the home, brush them off & park muddy boots outside the door.

Outdoor activities:

Our guests do spelunking at Linville Caverns, hike, bird watch & boat at Julian Price Lake just off the Parkway, white water raft at Wahoo, bike on Railroad Grade rd then tube at Todd while others do trout fishing or horseback riding at Leatherwood. Guests have found Wilson Creek to be good for canoeing & hiking; excellent swimming is at Elk River Falls. There are directions to these locations in the binder inside the home.

The Blue Ridge Parkway area has many Birding sites. One is located at Julian Price Memorial Park; another is located at Elk Knob near Todd. Use our PC to check out North Carolina Birding Trail.org for more info!

If you want to go to NC gem mining sites, print the location directions on the printer to take with you. We hear western NC is a fabulous place for gem mining.

About our home:

This lovely home has features for everyone! Fabulous views & wonderful breezes! The home is decorated with horse prints, photos of Italy & includes some of the photography of artist Margaret Denny. We have several antiques. The antique dining table has several leaves, allowing it to seat 1-8 comfortably. We have extra folding tables & chairs in the basement. Check out the coffee table, read the inside! There is also an antique book that is fun to page through.

We have granite countertops, hardwood flooring, new carpeting & new flooring in the basement. You & your party are very important to us, so we try to make the home comfy & inviting with everything you need.

We have 4 bedrooms, 2 upstairs bedrooms each with a balcony; each has two double beds & share one bathroom. Master & basement bedrooms have a queen bed & ensuite bathroom. All linens and towels are sanitized in preparation for your arrival. The master will be made up for you, but the remainder of sheets will be left out for you to choose the bed in a room that suits you.

You will enjoy preparing meals in the well equipped kitchen & grilling on the huge gas grill. Everything you need is at hand! For those not helping in the meal preparation, there is high speed internet WIFI, PC games & loads of things to check out on the internet. If you have a laptop with a Netflix account, you'll have no trouble downloading at this high speed!

After a day of hiking, you might want to wash your duds then play a rousing game of Pool, Darts or Foosball. For the family that enjoys various activities, we have 3 DVD players, 2 TVs, & a large basement with space for games (a 3rd TV and VHS player can be placed in any of the upstairs bedrooms, but please return to the basement before you leave). The children have named the basement 'The Kid Zone'.

Later, watch Satellite TV, get on the internet or watch a DVD. For that romantic touch, turn on the fireplace with the remote; watch the flames & pulsating embers, while enjoying the long range layered mountain views.

In the mountains, any cell phone coverage is spotty, especially traveling the Parkway. Keep this in mind while away from the home. At the home, we have a network extender that allows Verizon phones to work. Other cell phones may work at the top of the hill just past our property. There is no cell phone tower in the area, but you can also use our landline for local & long distance at no cost to you. Texting should work for any phone.

The home is great for reading & relaxing. It is so quiet & peaceful. Or just sit & do nothing on one of the 4 swings on the covered & gated, wrap around deck. So many things to enjoy!

Outside the home, you'll find a reflection bench, a swing surrounded by daffodils (in season) with long range views. There is a fenced dog run for your favorite pooches, but can accommodate 2 horses (that get along well). This secluded home has irises, daffodils, mountain laurel & rhododendrons.

The night time views are spectacular; the stars seem so close you think you can touch them. We have a star book to help you identify constellations, plus a pair of binoculars.

Bring your ATV, cycling, canoeing or fishing gear, the pull through drive way accommodates 5 or more cars, or car & trailer (motorcycle, canoe, horse or ATV).

There are multiple bird feeders next to the home. We provide a small supply of bird seed which is in a black can on the deck. During the hot months, we have sugar for making Hummingbird food. Feeders are located in the shed, along with a spare tank of gas for the grill.

Just off the parkway, the kids will enjoy Tow-Mater in Coffeytown. It's fun to see that character where you'd never expect it!

You will love your day trip to laid back Blowing Rock, Kilwins ice cream shop is a must do, as is Tweetsie for the kids (April-Nov). Boone is famous for App state & Mast General Store, plus Daniel Boone Inn, where the food is terrific! The Saddlebrook restaurant in Leatherwood is open on weekends spring-fall for some tasty fare. When out food shopping you can take one of the Styrofoam coolers we have in the laundry room. The coolers also come in handy on a day trip, to keep sandwiches & drinks cool.

There are guide books at the home to find the less-traveled hiking paths off the Blue Ridge Parkway & a book listing the locations of waterfalls in the area.

For months of December thru end of March, 4WD or AWD is recommended.

Pets:

We ask guests with dogs to use our sheets to cover fabric furniture to keep hair and dander from fabric; this also helps future guests with pet allergies.

About Mary Ellen Smith

My husband is an avid cyclist and I love to ride my paint horse. We love our family and friends and love to entertain them and have fun! This is a vacation home, our main residence is in Pleasant Garden, NC.

We were relocated to NC from Illinois, where we both grew up. I'm originally from Sandy Springs GA. We met over a pitcher of beer after a softball game and have been together now for over 24 years. My husband is so much fun to be with and we love it here in NC. My son and his wife live in Oregon, Wisconsin, a very long distance for a mom to endure! We love our visitors and will go to the nth degree to make your stay wonderful!

Why Mary Ellen Smith chose Deep Gap

We chose this property because it accommodated both our interests! For my husband, the proximity to the Blue Ridge Parkway and all the cycling opportunities it offered, the cooler temps of the mountains and the ability to keep my horse at the property and sometimes trailer the 6.1 miles to Leatherwood for a day of riding. Plus we really love the mountain area. The photo shown here is of a day trip we took to Elk Knob. Elk Knob has a 1.9 mile hiking path to the heavens with heavenly views!

What makes this cabin unique

The biggest benefit of this home is that it is very quiet & peaceful, yet close to all the fun of the Blue Ridge and other tourist destinations! The home has wonderful mountain views, is spacious enough for the whole family so that everyone can do what they please without impacting the others. Proximity to Leatherwood is a real plus! 10$ and a coggins gets you a full day of trail riding! Another sensational feature of the home is the gated wrap around deck. There are 4 swings that allow you to take in the views and the breezes. A favorite is the upstairs bedrooms with private decking. Grab a chair from the master closet and sit and read on your own private deck. Or, gaze out at the long range views from the upstairs back bedroom. The main floor master has access to the deck and has an ensuite bathroom. The basement bedroom has an ensuite bathroom, and is private. Home includes washer and dryer. The views can be shared from the living room with a french door leading to the deck. With all the windows open, there is rarely a day you need to turn on the AC, but it is at the ready. The home has a wonderful wood stove in the basement and a wall heater, plus an extra refrigerator. The fenced in paddock will accommodate a horse or your favorite pooch! This group spent quality time together and had a fantastic time. Joyce spoke with me on the phone and remarked that this home made everyone feel at home. There was nothing they required as it was all right there for their use. She remarked that it was a wonderful stay, they wrote all their comments in the book we keep at the home for such remarks. She did say that using their GPS, in lieu of our supplied directions, took them out of their way. So future renters, take the directions the owner provides with you! As a property owner, I enjoyed speaking with Joyce, such nice folks! They had a wonderful family get together!

Absolutely Amazing

I NEVER expected what we got! The cabin is beyond gorgeous! Practically everything you need is there! We felt like royalty :) The wrap around porch is so relaxing and the view from the back deck is heavenly. There was nothing about this cabin that we could possibly complain about! It was simply perfect. When we went to Blowing Rock and Boone we took our time and enjoyed the drive down the mountain! It is amazing what you can see when you take the time to look. We saw a mom turkey and about 10 or so babies with her as well as several other wild turkey and we spotted a ground hog or something similar to it on the side of the mountain. There were so many different colored flowers just growing wild, the rocks in the side of the mountain, the small creeks, the moths ... so many different kinds of them ... this cabin is something that anyone would definitely enjoy! Look forward to our trip back next year :)

Perfect Vacation House!!

We had a wonderful time at your vacation home and surely didn't want to leave!! The house was really clean, had plenty of room for us all to spread out and more than ample towels, kitchen accessories and supplies. The most well stocked house we've ever stayed in. Based on the other comments we'd read about Sampson Rd., we were terrified before we arrived but once we drove on it, it wasn't bad at all. It's narrow in spots and dusty/bumpy but we didn't mind since we took our time and enjoyed the views!! The porch and swings are just perfect for relaxing. It's so quiet there and a quick trip to Grandfather Mountain via the Parkway made for a great day. The only downside was there were stink bugs throughout the house all weekend, even on our beds and on the kitchen table, but I'm not sure there is a lot that can be done with those. Thanks so much for allowing us to stay in your little piece of heaven, we definitely want to return when we can stay a little longer and bring more family with us!

Great cabin in Blowing Rock!!!

We thoroughly enjoyed the fabulous and fully furnished/equipped cabin! It had everything we needed and then some. Gorgeous view of the mountains from the wrap porch while you relax on 1 of 4 swing benches. This was our 1st time in the NC area and we were so impressed with the great southern hospitality of everyone. We loved the trip from Blowing Rock over to downtown Boone (the lovely highway and the spectacular views). We would definitely recommend this cabin and I know that we will be returning!!

Snowy Vacation nightmare!

Do not I repeat do not stay in this cabin in snowy weather. Also do not attempt to find it for your first time at night. First night we barely got to the cabin. I had to knock on someone's door and almost got bit by 2 dogs to ask directions after driving up snowy and icy roads for 45 min with no phone signal and almost getting stuck in a SUV truck if you can imagine how bad and scary that is. We were only there 2 nights instead of the 4 nights we paid for. Had to leave because our family could not get back and forth safely or at all for that matter, the day we left we had to get towed out by a neighbor with 4 wheel drive. Ended up renting another cabin for our final 2 nights we were there, contacted Mary for a refund for the 2 nights and our deposit and after the whole terrifying/scary unsafe situation our family was in for our family vacation and they only send us back payment for 1 night stay, not money for the other night stay and gave us a horrible reason of a excuse of why we didn't get our deposit back. Mind you they will charge you a cleaning fee and still want the cabin spotless when you leave, cleaning lady leaves notes in every bathroom to start washing your bedding sheets and blankets. Then after all this her husband calls me back and says he's keeping our deposit because his $5 10 year old dry rotted plastic rolling ball on the bottom of the bed was cracked and broke and also because he said we left water bottles around the house and they "assumed" we had people staying there because we had friends come by a few times that were staying at sugar mountain. Big joke we cleaned the entire house and took out all the trash and respected there property to the fullest extent. To make a long story short stay away from this cabin during the snowy times as it is unsafe and you will ruin your vacation by not being able to get on and off the mountain and if anything does happen you will not get any money back or your deposit. We had a greatest time ever after we left there and stayed at Sugar Mountain Ski resort and that's where we will be staying when we go back next year! Trust my review and make sure your vacation is safe and fun!

Owner's Response: In 8 years, we've had 2-3 snows which might require a 4WD. Renters emailed us b/4 stay asking should they take a 4WD. We advised 4WD, which they apparently did not use. We were not notified of any issues during their first 2 nights. They left the cabin on the 3rd day, snow also ended that day. Our Std. rental agreement says refunds aren’t granted due to weather. Nevertheless we try to be fair with our guests. When the renters asked for a refund we said we would give $125 (one night’s stay plus $10). They expressed gratitude for this. We said their $100 deposit would also be refunded once the cleaning crew advised there were no problems. Cleaners came in day after renters left (no trouble getting there with non-4WD). The rental was supposed to have been for 4 people. Our rental rates/cleaning fee are based on number of guests (including children). The crew found all 6 beds & foldout futon used & 7 bags of trash (Clean time: 7 1/2 hr.). The neighbor who assisted them to leave said there were 4 men outside of their 2 cars & more people inside. It was clear there were 6-7 or more staying instead of 4. Normally when renters add more guests than paid for, they advise us & we request an extra $10 per night/person. Our Std. rental agreement calls for $25/night for additional guests we’re not notified of. Damage found: chair arm-rest rip, broken bed, laundry basket gone plus garbage left in the kitchen & fridge. Beer cans were found littered from front porch to back basement level. After learning of the extra guests, damages & state the place was left, we called them to say we wouldn’t refund any more money. We earlier refunded $125 & told them to consider that as $100 deposit plus extra $25. Under the circumstances, this was still generous. We provide turn by turn directions for getting here. Guests always find it when using these. We say guests shouldn’t use GPS, this can lead you astray. Guests did not clean the home, nor were they asked. They're not required to wash any sheets/ towels. We appreciate it if a load of towels is started b/4 leaving (there is a note about this in laundry room). We don’t withhold any deposit if this isn’t done. We don’t know what they were referring to by a “$5 10 year old dry rotted plastic rolling ball on the bottom of the bed”. This was an unusual situation. We go all-out to ensure guests are comfortable/safe & have everything needed. Per our other reviews (mostly 5 stars), all of our guests are very happy staying at our cabin

Perfect Mountain Home! Wish it were mine!!

Thanks so much for sharing your awesome cabin with us! This home is the perfect example of a secluded mountain retreat. The peace and tranquility is beyond amazing. We loved everything about it. It is well stocked with almost anything that you might need. Mary was wonderful to work with, making every part of the reservation a piece of cake! She provides you with very detailed and helpful information to make your stay even more enjoyable. We fell in love with the gravel road, enjoying every turn, especially going past Penley Road and seeing the stream actually flowing across the road! And we even got a picture of Tow Mater in his barn when we passed through Coffeytown, the grandkids couldn't believe it! And once we saw the house, we were in love! It was even more awesome than the pictures showed! Walking into the home feels like walking into your own place. The views are amazing from the back deck. We even had a hummingbird to visit us! We spent one of our days just relaxing and enjoying watching the rain and exploring the woods and roads around the house. Our other days we headed out for adventures and couldn't wait to get back! We went to West Jefferson and visited the Cheese Factory and bought some cheese that was made there, delicious! The Mast General Stores, Tweetsie Railroad, Mystery Hill, The Daniel Boone Inn, downtown Blowing Rock are some of the "don't miss" places to visit! To anyone thinking of renting this home, if you're looking for a secluded, quiet mountain home, and don't mind a few miles of a gravel country road, this is the perfect place, whether you're a couple or large family or group of friends!!

Think about this, staying in Blowing Rock then visiting Boone takes the same amount of travel time as if you were staying at this home & going to Blowing Rock or Boone. Same with Linville Falls/Cavern, takes less time to visit the falls than it does if staying in Boone or Blowing Rock. From the home to BR or to Boone, is the same amount of time. But you don't have the traffic or the tourists, just visit, have fun and come home and relax in a home that feels like your own home.

Home is located in the mountains just 7 miles from the parkway, 9 miles from Blowing Rock city limits and 13 miles from Boone, in the Deer Crossing gated community just off of Sampson road. Home has great mountain views from back deck, upper balcony bedroom & from inside the living room.

(Note, some maps may show us as being near Deep Gap but we are on a state maintained road called Sampson between Boone and Blowing Rock).

Home is also 6.1 miles from Leatherwood for horseback riding or fly fishing! This resort offers many activities too!

Near the home there are loads of state stocked trout fishing sites, horse back riding at Leatherwood. Visit Linville Falls. Many of our visitors, go there to hike & take photos. Alternatively, there are many relaxing things to do at the home. Hike the community, bike the hills nearby, take a deep breath & commune with nature. This is THE place to totally unplug and get away from the hustle and bustle of life & reconnect with your family! Fully furnished with many, many extras, the personal touch that shows we care about you! Stay tuned, Sampson Road is being widened and then paved. The trip to town(s) will be much quicker.
