Greetings! We are Matilde and Gustavo, both visual artists. We came in 1999 to New Orleans for an exhibit of Gustavo and barely few hours later fell irrevocably in love with the city.

We recurrently exhibit in Ariodante Gallery in Julia Street. Gustavo is a well-known artist and regularly shows abroad and other cities of the United States. That is one of the reasons we travel often.

Matilde Alberny purchased this cottage in 2002

We lived in the French Quarter, then the Lower Garden District and found the perfect mélange of village, rural laissez faire and city life and entertainment. A walk in the afternoon by Magazine Street or hearing the fountain of the Coliseum Square at night is enough to fall in love over and over again.

The charm of our garden, the smells of the trees, Noche and Amber, both fixed cats live in the yard, wanting to hear the voices from our visitors while enjoying the luxury of this peace. By the way, Noche and Amber appreciate it immensely when you put some food out and fresh water for them. Food is always in a container outside the kitchen door of the main house.

Great private studio in a fantastic part of town.

  • 4 of 5
My partner and I absolutely loved our time in New Orleans, and your place was just what we needed! We loved being in the Garden district, A+ for location! It is perfectly placed between uptown and downtown NOLA, and we found Magazine to be our favourite precinct to eat, drink and shop in, only a 3 minute walk. Check in/ out was no fuss, we really appreciated the privacy & the flat is amply equipped for short or long term stays and very comfortable. Many thanks, Zak & Karla

Quiet, private, confortable and a lot of fun!

  • 5 of 5
This is a lovely, clean, quiet, and very comfortable studio located behind a house. There is a private patio area to lounge around and enjoy. Located in what is called the "lower garden district" this is a beautiful area of New Orleans. We appreciated the close proximity to the French Quarter. For example, If we ate too much food the night before (which occurred almost every night!) we would then take a lovely stroll all the way to the FQ the next morning-ready for a new adventure in New Orleans. We arrived during French Quarter Fest and it was quite a respite to be able to leave the quarter and make our way back via the St. Charles streetcar, or the bus. Matilde, the manager, was extremely helpful in giving us food/restaurant suggestions. All of her recommendations were spot on, by the way! I appreciated how easily accessible she was with any questions that came up. I'd say, keep in mind this is a studio and perfect for just two people. April in New Orleans and even between festivals is a perfect time to visit. We are arranging this again for next year!

Owner's Response: Hosting you was AWESOME. We designed the Courtyard Cottage as our art studio, a place where to escape the world while being just steps from fully enjoying it. It has been an amazing experience having our guests being able to enjoy what we had aimed for when we dreamt it. I started collecting ideas for your next trip! Be ready!

A Convenient Oasis

  • 5 of 5
I've taken several trips to New Orleans, and this is by far the best place I have stayed. The property was easy to find in the charming Garden District. Matilde was very helpful and provided everything we could have wanted for our accommodations. The cottage was clean, comfortable, and quiet. Walk around the corner for delicious coffee and great shops and restaurants of Magazine Street. Although the Garden District is my new favorite part of New Orleans, most people come for the French Quarter - you're in luck. Only a 3 block walk and a 15 minute ride on the streetcar drops and you're at the corner of Canal and Bourbon. The streetcar runs 24hrs about every 5-10 mins for $1.25. I was amazed how easy it was to get to the French Quarter. I can't recommend this place enough. The location, charm, and quality of this cottage are the best in the city.

Secluded/Quiet Oasis in middle of Everything!

  • 5 of 5
We drove in from Dallas for Mardi Gras and my 50th BDay! We arrived late Friday night and found the charming property right away. It's better than the pictures but those are extremely accurate. It was very clean with every amenity you could imagine. SO glad we stayed here instead of a hotel. It was blocks from the revelers but once you walked down into the charming courtyard you couldn't hear a thing. Perfect for relaxing and sleeping in. Matilde was so curtious and pleasant. She had left in our room a King Cake with a birthday card and some beads and trinkets. How lovely and sweet! Unfortunately we didn't get to meet her with all the celebrations of that Fat Tuesday weekend. But she was always in touch via phone or text and helpful on where to go. The neighborhood had everything and so very beautiful and charming. Great shops, bars, restaurants and a very nice park across the street. We were a few blocks from St Charles where all the Parades went down. Very convenient. I scored a loot at the Bacchus Parade. This was our first time using this site and we are very pleased. I will definatly stay at Matildes Cottage Hideaway my next trip to NOLA!! Thank you for your hospitality we had a fantastic time!!!

Terrific place. Gracious hosts.

This quiet cottage for two was a great place for our get-away. With a full kitchen, we enjoyed a leisurely breakfast outdoors on comfortable furniture in the patio garden. New Orlean's nearby bus and trolley system allowed us to keep our car parked for our entire stay while we got around the city with ease. And our hosts went out of their way to make us comfortable and welcome. The art they created and placed on the walls and in the garden helped make this a lovely place inside and out.

My husband and I recently spent two weeks in the New Orleans area. Matilde’s studio served as a perfect launching point for our explorations. It’s location was perfect! The bus stop was right at the corner and the streetcar was two blocks away on St. Charles Street. Magazine Street with all it’s shops and restaurants was just a block away. With so many bars and restaurants within walking distance, we were pleasantly surprised to discover that the studio was on a very quiet residential street.
The studio itself was just as depicted in photos; clean, modern and artfully decorated.
It was large for a studio; plenty of room for 2 people. As we stayed for two weeks, we did do some of our own cooking and found the kitchen to be equipped with pots, pans, cookware, dinnerware, glassware and some spices. All the basics were covered.
The outdoor patio was large, quiet and private; tucked behind the main house. The weather was a little cool when we were there (beginning of February) so we didn’t make too much use of it, but I can imagine lazing back in one of those hammocks or under one of the umbrellas after a long day walking about the French Quarter.
Probably one of the best things about this property are the hostess and host, Matilde and Gustavo. They both went out of their way to make our first visit to New Orleans memorable. Our flight was delayed until late in the evening due to inclement weather and when I communicated this to Matilde she made sure that we had coffee, milk, bread, fruit, King cake and many other essentials for the next morning. Our luggage was delayed and they even offered to wait for it’s arrival so that we wouldn't miss out on one day of the NOLA experience. Matilde checked in with us every other day to see how things were going and she readily answered our texts when we had questions. We couldn’t have asked for anything more.
We would definitely return here on our next trip to New Orleans.
