Peaceful place to stay in the countryside
We spent a lovely time here in the hills above Agropoli; everything we needed was provided, and the cottage was very clean and cosy. Massimo kindly picked us up from the station and he and Milena were always happy to answer any of our questions. The views from the terrace were beautiful, and it was warm enough (with a warm jumper) to sit and watch the sun setting and the lights come on across the hillsides in the evenings, and have a leisurely breakfast outdoors in the mornings.
It is about a 25 minute walk to Agropoli station, so we could visit the sites of Pompeii one day, and Herculaneum on another day, catching the train to Pompei town and either walking a short way to Pompeii, or walking to the Circumvesuviana station and getting off at Ercolano. In between we explored the old town, harbour and the beach areas of Agropoli and walked along the hill tops of the coast, with many wildflowers at this time, including some lovely orchids, and no other walkers that we saw.
Massimo, Milena and little Sara very kindly dropped us off in Paestum, where we visited the museum and the ancient Greek temples and remains of the city there.
The buffalo mozzarella was delicious, and became the basis of picnic lunches, with tomatoes and rocket in fresh Italian bread.
Having a car would make exploring the countryside further south a lot easier, less tied to timetables, but for this time we were happy to use the trains and buses to get to where we wanted to go, as well as walk locally. On the last morning Massimo returned us to the station, so the big day travelling home went very well.
Thank you Massimo and Milena for offering your little cottages, and for the gifts (our first taste of the local products) and your kindness. We wish you all the best.
