What a dump !!!
We just checked in for a four day stay. The cottage needs major renovations, loose window panes, doors that don't close, AC that doesn't work, roaches in cabinets. It's comical that it is so bad. The property has a lot of potential as the location is great. But until the management puts major money into this place, I'd strongly recommend anyone to stay away. There's a reason why the rate is so much less than market.
Owner's Response: The family’s comments are accurate. We have been in communication with the family with our sincere apologies for the condition of the unit and how this occurred. The unit has new carpets, washer/dryer, refrigerator and dishwasher and should have been properly prepared for the visit. The reservation had actually been made for another Beach Cottage that immediately before the first reserved night was discovered to have significant problems in one of the showers. This occurred on a sold out July 4 week, so this Beach Cottage which at the time was only being used for storage was hurriedly prepared for the visit so that this family’s holiday would not be disrupted. Unfortunately, when it was discovered that the individual air-conditioning unit in one bedroom was defunct, a temporary window unit was installed, with the window enclosure not fully sealed and in generally poor repair. Housekeeping also in its hurry did not carry out the usual round of pest control for the Palmetto Bugs which are a “charming” feature of Island life. This Beach Cottage is an exception and not representative of the units which are rented at Melrose on the Beach due to the “rush” of getting it ready during a sold out week.
Appropriately presented Beach Cottages on Daufuskie Island are a “value proposition” even within the just partially reopened Melrose on the Beach Resort. The relative value of this opportunity to access the partially reopened Resort, with the natural beauty and historical significance of Daufuskie Island, is unmatched on the Southeast coast. These Beach Cottages are not perfect or in “new condition”. Rather they are “comfortable given their vintage condition” in a very attractive Resort setting at the right price.
