Icebergs in front yard

  • 5 of 5
After spending 3 nights and 4 days at this rental, I have only positive comments for anyone looking at spending some time at Fort Amherst. The drive into downtown is very easy, don't let that discourage you. The best part if the VIEW. We had ICEBERGS, rainbows and at time some sunshine. The cottage had everything we needed, while the weather was not always the best I would recommend this rental to everyone....well actually I have been recommending it to everyone. Our pictures just don't do it justice. You do need a car, but if you are a walker or runner, this is a great starting point.

No Regrets

  • 5 of 5
Staying at the Fort Amherst lightkeeper's house has been one of the most exhilarating and beautiful experiences, I have ever had the good fortune to have on all the trips I have been on. To spend time in this historic site that provided breathtaking views, privacy and shared time with family, is something that you cannot put a price on.
The price might be a bit steep for some or even most, but as stated previously, it's a once in a lifetime opportunity for many, so take advantage with no regrets. You only come around once, so live it up while you can.
Both Peter and Nicole have been so accommodating and very pleasant to to deal with; very quick to respond to any concerns, and certainly very genuine, as most Newfoundlanders are. I would liked to have thanked them in person, but the opportunity to meet, unfortunately, did not happen. So, thanks to both of you!
I hope one day to have the opportunity to rent this little piece of heaven once again. Until then, I'll keep hoping my lottery ticket pays dividends.

Perfect holiday spot - beautiful comfortable accommodation, incredible views, fabulous location. Our kids enjoyed watching all the activity in the harbour. The owners were super friendly and helpful. We loved every minute of our 4-night stay.

Magnificence in Newfoundland

  • 5 of 5
We were the envy of every person who walked by our beautiful vacation home with its ocean view and magnificent sunrises. The house was beautiful and fastidiously clean. Beds were comfortable, plumbing worked perfectly, pre-delivery of groceries was wonderfully convenient. Be aware that you can't drink the water, but a water cooler is located in the kitchen. A bit of a challenge to find: follow the directions carefully. Be prepared for some narrow roadways getting up to the property. The only problem was the time passed too quickly. Our party of five had a fantastic time and highly recommend the Head Light Keeper's Residence.

Exceptional vista's...Was a perfect backdrop for our boy's trip getaway...Very well appointed and equipped home...Ideal access to hiking trails, hi-ways for day trips, yet close enough to downtown to not inhibit a George Street night out...Unique and memorable...Wished we could have stayed longer

Light Keeper Luxury

  • 5 of 5
We were fortunate enough to be the first occupants after completion of the exceptional renovation of the Lighthouse Keeper's residence at Fort Amherst. Nicole and Peter were tentative about accepting our booking but provided frequent updates regarding their progress and were able to complete the renovation just prior to us arriving in Newfoundland. There were no photos available at the time of booking and when we unlocked the door we were amazed by the quality, craftsmanship and influence of local decor.

The location is excellent and only 10-15 minutes from the St. John's airport. The single lane road up to the lighthouse is 'gated' by a fluorescent orange rope and parking is available next to the cottage. We arrived in fog and were fortunate to hear the fog horn which we eventually fell asleep listening to.

In the morning we could see whales breaching in front of the lighthouse while enjoying our morning coffee and again at night watching the sunset from our deck. The lighthouse offers spectacular ocean views, views of Signal Hill and a perfect vantage point to observe the bustling St. John's port. We hiked up Signal Hill for the noon hour gun and back down to the Geo museum. 'The Rooms' is also good rainy day venue in St. John's.

We took a number of day trips to include Cape Spear (the most Easterly point in North America), hiked the East Coast trail (entrance off the road to the lighthouse), Petty Harbour to enjoy Fish and Chips in a small fishing village, Whale and Atlantic Puffin watching boat tour from Bay Bulls and took the Irish Loop to a live archaeological dig site in Ferryland.

We enjoyed the local restaurants to include a spectacular 7-course dinner at Raymond's, the YellowBelly Brewery, the Duke, Oliver's and take-out from the Rocket Cafe (salted cod cakes-excellent).

We highly recommend a trip to St. John's to enjoy the ocean views, the people and culture of Newfoundland from a unique vantage point -the Lighthouse Keeper's Residence.

Owner's Response: Kim & Rich,
Thanks so much for taking some time to write a detailed review of your experience in NL and with staying at our vacation home. We were thrilled that we were able to complete our renovations on schedule and offer the house to you in time for your stay. You had the benefit of "breaking in the house"! We're so glad you all enjoyed it and we hope you'll come again. Best regards, Peter & Nicole
