In 1999, we migrated to Atlanta from upstate New York, seeking warm weather and sunshine. In February of 2013, we decided to begin looking at real estate in West Florida, and Voila! What can I say, miracles happen fast.

Paris Dickey purchased this house in 2013

In search of yet a 'warmer climate', we stumbled upon a barrier island we now fondly refer to as 'Little G'. Back home in Atlanta, we were tirelessly searching for a studio to quench our creative thirst. One spin on a golf cart around this sandy island, we were convinced we had found the best of all creative spaces, with lush natural beauty and solace from which to draw inspiration.

It's hip, immaculate and modern with a killer porch, only 175 steps to the beach. I've counted them myself.

Take your paints to the beach, photograph the sunrise, pull out your yoga mat or journal the rhythms of the Island tortoise.

PERFECT RETREAT!

  • 5 of 5
This was our first time on Little Gasparilla Island. Calypso is a wonderful house only steps from a perfect and quiet beach. The owners were quick to answer any questions. The house was stocked full of everything one could possibly need. My wife and I enjoyed coming in from a relaxing day on the beach and cooking dinner in a fantastic kitchen! If you're looking for a place to get away from it all I would highly recommend Calypso. The island is perfect for nature lovers. We saw dolphins, turtles, manatees, seahawks, starfish, sand dollars, and a multitude of fish. We also enjoyed paddle boarding and kayaking around the many estuaries and inlets around the island. Highly Recommended little getaway!

GREAT LITTLE HIDEAWAY!

  • 5 of 5
This was our third trip to the island and needed a place last and this was available. Paris was great to work with and we even were able to check in early. We met the owner upon arrival who was busy getting prepared for us. It's at a great location and the closest we've been to the gulf side. Very clean and made the family feel right at home. The weekend went by way too fast in this little piece of paradise! Great place for a family of 4 or less and will consider this place again!
Have kayaks available and it's a definite.

A LITTLE BIT OF HEAVEN.....

  • 5 of 5
We were so excited to get to Little Gasparilla Island, but when we arrived at our lodging we were even more thrilled. The home is beautiful, sparkling clean, and the owner even brought the cart down to the dock so we could transport our things.

"Calypso" is located very close to the beach, just a quick walk really. We had no trouble finding it with the excellent instructions we had received. The landscaping is beautiful, and obviously a lot of work has gone into this home. The décor was very nicely done. The owner and the manager both checked with us to see that we had arrived safely and were happy with the lodging. There were beach toys, towels, umbrellas, and coolers to make our stay complete.

The water taxi service was very accommodating. We rented a golf cart, but didn't really make good use of it. It was fun to drive around the island, but otherwise, not knowing anyone else there, not a necessity.

We have already spoken with family and hope to have them join us next year for what may become an annual vacation for us. Thanks for a vacation to remember!

GREAT SECLUDED GETAWAY

  • 4 of 5
We have traveled extensively throughout No Amer & Europe and we have been visiting this part of Florida for 20 years now - and love this area. We occasionally need quiet and secluded vacations for real downtime. If you like the same, this is the place. This is old Florida. Mary Lou and Tarpon Real Estate are very helpful. The house is well appointed, kitchen well stocked and the location is excellent. The photos on the web are accurate. Only a few quick minutes to the beach and the same to the ICW the other direction. This house is an excellent value - and with the water filtration system, no need to bring over huge jugs of drinking water. We were traveling with an 18mo old and the potable crib was there waiting for us upon arrival. Very nice.

Other than for one drawback of personal preference to us, we would rent this again in a heartbeat.

Pros: Location, value, cleanliness, wildlife/sea life, appliances and all the gear you need.
Cons: Unsure if we could have used the bikes (we also didn't ask). No use of golf cart though it could be rented for $275 for the week. Other places include both - but do cost more than this house. So do the math. Major con for us was the master bed...it was very, very soft without support. Like a hammock. We both rolled to the middle and we are not heavy people - on the contrary, trim & fit folks. We ended up sleeping apart most nights, used the sofa and didn't sleep well at all - not ideal! A firmer, flatter mattress is needed in our opinion.

Other than the mattresses, this place gets 5 Stars! It really is a great place!

AHHHH, PARADISE...

  • 5 of 5
I found Calypso on VRBO and inquired about availability. Within hours, I had been contacted by Mary Lou and before I knew it I was laughing with her on the phone. She was amazing. She answered all my questions, painted a very accurate picture of the island and of Calypso, and made sure I knew anything that might be viewed as a "con". After speaking with her, I was able to make a very informed decision about whether Little Gasparilla Island (LGI) would be the perfect destination for our family. And it was.
LGI is an island only accessible by boat. Some may hesitate to take a chance on leaving behind shops, restaurants, and entertainment. Don't. Our family had gotten caught up in the tourist trap and we felt like we would regret not having a way to "entertain" our small children. I was a little uneasy about this even up until we were on LGI, but my concerns were quickly squashed.
When we arrived, Mary Lou was still on the island. She greeted us at the dock after we were dropped off by Pirate's Water Taxi. Calypso is located in the middle of the island between the dock and the beach. We walked for about 3 or 4 minutes and arrived at the place that would soon feel like home. Recently updated, it is simple, modern, charming, comfortable, and clean. Honestly, staying in Calypso made me want to redecorate when I got home. The photography of the beach and ocean was stunning, the decor was perfect, the colors were inviting, and the landscaping was beautiful. From talking to the locals, we learned that the owners have done a lot of work!
After dropping off our groceries and our bag (with the washer and dryer available, we decided to pack minimally) we headed to the beach which was a quick 2 minute walk to the water. LGI's beach is clean, unpopulated, and beautiful. Everything we read said that the few people that we would see would all be friendly, which was the case. We talked to people from all over the country who had all fallen in love with paradise as equally as we had. The owners provided beach chairs and an umbrella and my husband even found a shovel so that we could build a giant sea turtle. We walked the beach looking for shells, swam in the ocean with friendly sea rays, watched the dolphins, kayaked over manatees, admired the beautiful birds, and enjoyed the sunset every night.
Everything about this place exceeded our expectations. Our week could not have been more perfect. I couldn't thank Bob and Mary Lou enough. We are so excited to visit again!
