About Jean Sylvia

I built this house in 1988 as a single mother raising my lovely daughter who now lives in California (much too far away)! Now married, I live in downtown Bar Harbor with my husband, across the street from my three lively and lovely granddaughters. As young girls, my daughter and her cousin spent countless hours combing the backwoods of our property and collecting moss. Their grand plan was to make wreaths to sell to the tourists - leading to their fame and fortune! The small hill where they found the best moss, they named 'Moss Mountain.' Although they never sold a wreath (I'm not even sure they completed one), they spent hours in our backyard playing, laughing and planning their futures, as little girls love to do. I'll always treasure those days and those girls, and it is this fond memory that gave rise to the name 'Moss Mountain Cottage.'

Jean Sylvia purchased this house in 1988

Why Jean Sylvia chose Somesville

Mount Desert Island has been my home since I graduated from college (I won't tell you how long ago that was) and I love it here. During the summer I hike and bike the trails of Acadia, comb the beaches to collect sea glass and sea-tumbled rocks, and take in all the island has to offer in unique shops and gourmet restaurants. During our cold and snowy winters, I take early morning walks or snowshoe on the breathtakingly beautiful (and quiet) carriage roads, spend time with my family and friends, and read some great books I've been meaning to get to all summer. When I travel away for any length of time and start yearning to see the mountains of Acadia and smell the sea air as I cross the Trenton bridge onto MDI - that's when I really know how much I appreciate and love my island home.

What makes this house unique

I love the quiet and the privacy of the homes around Indian Point. Sitting on the back deck and listening to the evening chatter of frogs in the bog, the morning birds that wake you instead of an alarm clock, eying the deer as they shyly peak out from the woods, and taking in the beauty of a full moon when it rises above the giant cedars - will all contribute to your restful vacation on MDI.

Moss Mountain Cottage

  • 5 of 5
We were very happy to find this cottage for just a three night stay. We were pleased that Moss Cottage was so clean, well kept and welcoming. It was well stocked with what we might need, even toiletries! It was furnished nicely and comfortably so we felt at home. The rooms were very spacious. We liked the private well situated setting. The owner was very easy to work with and tried very hard to accomodate us in any way possible. We appreciated the fresh flowers and vegetables left to welcome us! The deposit was returned to us very promptly. We hope to come back soon!

Great trip!

  • 5 of 5
We came to Bar Harbor for the fabulous Night Sky Festival and found this property to be well situated for the many events scattered throughout the peninsula. Very peaceful, more than enough space for the 2 of us, clean and well kept. However, if you are accustomed to a pillowtop mattress or other that conforms to oneself, you may not find the queen bed comfortable; I couldn't sleep on it tho my husband thought it OK. The owner is very nice and easy to work with, and readily available should you need her. Apart from the usual highlights and activities of the region, we highly recommend the Star Parties that occur weekly during the summer, Sips restaurant (10 miles away in Southwest Harbor), stopping in Ellsworth on the way in for supplies (the Walmart is well stocked), bringing a good map, and your own music/radio if desired. Bon voyage!

Our favorite place to stay!

  • 5 of 5
Our group of four (two retired couples from Michigan) loved this place! We immediately felt at home and comfortable in this clean, spacious house. In fact, of all the places we stayed during our two week trip, this was our favorite. The owner makes a point of having everything on hand that travellers might need--right down to charcoal for the grill.

Location Location Location!

  • 5 of 5
We stayed here for a girls weekend to visit the park and do some hiking. This was the perfect location-- only minutes away from the visitors center of Acadia National Park and downtown Bar Harbor. The house is set back a bit from the road and surrounded by trees so there is total privacy. I even woke one morning to deer in the front yard! It was clean and comfortable and had all the amenities you would expect from being at your own home, including a fully stocked kitchen and bathroom. I can't wait to come back with my family. Thank you Jean for your hospitality and having thought of everything!

Home away from home

  • 5 of 5
We were so thrilled that when we entered Moss Mountain Cottage it was just as the pictures showed. The house not only looked clean but it smelled clean. That's a big thing for me!! This property was just perfect for the four of us, although it could easily accommodate six. We were able to experience the beauty of Acadia National Park on the extensive hiking and biking trails and then, at the end of a long day, come back to a "home", where we could be comfortable and relax.

Jean really works to make sure you have everything you need from a binder of brochures of restaurants and attractions in the area to plenty of towels, paper products and even thoughtful gifts (food) that were there to welcome us. I also appreciated the fact that Jean was very accessible from the minute we booked the house and willing to research questions I had with reference to some things we wanted to do.

The entrance to Acadia was only 6 miles away, which was great since we were there everyday. We cooked "home" most nights. One night we had a seafood feast with lobsters, clams and mussels that we purchased at Rat's Clam Shack on Route 102. Great food at a great price.

We did go out to Thurston's Lobster Pound and had the most delicious LBLT, which is a Lobster Bacon Lettuce and Tomato sandwich. Delicious!! We also went to Jordan Pond House in Acadia for the famous popovers. They should not be missed.

We loved the Bar Harbor area and while it is the beautiful scenery that we will remember, it's because we had a place like Moss Mountain Cottage that made our stay effortless.

We are already thinking about that LBLT at Thurston's next September!! Can't wait.

Owner's Response: Susan - Thank you so much for your kind words. My husband and I work hard to make sure that Moss Mountain Cottage is the home away from home that people are looking for when they travel - the kind of relaxing and affordable place that we look for when we leave the island. I'm glad that you enjoyed your time at MMC and on MDI and we hope to host you again in the future. Jean

Staying at this cottage was truly like being at home. There is so much room and the setting is absolutely beautiful. It is fairly close to everything, but surrounded by woods and feels like you're secluded, away from it all! We have rented many vacation cabins and condos over the years - none compare to this in cleanliness, hominess, furnishings and amenities. They provided household the normal necessary items that are expected PLUS so much more: wireless internet, nice linens, pantry items, plenty of towels, toilet paper, paper towels, Kleenex, hangers (and no wire!), even shower gel and soap - she even had fresh-picked apples and a fresh cut flower on the dining room table! There is a binder with brochures and maps of area attractions. It's these extra little things that make a difference. The nightly rate is less than most hotels! When we return to the area we will definately love to stay at Moss Moantain Cabin again. Thanks for everything!

Moss Mountain Cottage, open year-round, is centrally located, not more than 15 minutes away from the entrance to Acadia National Park, the Ellsworth shopping centers, and all the picturesque towns and villages that make up Mount Desert Island. Our cottage is tucked away on five private wooded acres where you can relax after a long day hiking the granite peaks, biking or cross-country skiing on the historic carriage roads of Acadia - or after a more restful day taking in the breathtaking views atop Cadillac Mountain, cruising the waters of Frenchman Bay, or visiting the beautiful Thuya, Azalea Garden, or Rockefeller Gardens. If you'd like to stay closer to home, only a mile from the cottage, you will find the Nature Conservancy’s Indian Point Blagden Preserve, where osprey nest and seals bask on the rocks at low tide. Three miles away is Great Long Pond, where you can swim, canoe, kayak, launch your boat to water ski or fish, or enjoy ice-skating in the winter. There is golfing and sledding at the historic Kebo golf course; Pirate’s Cove miniature golf and Wild Acadia Fun Park for the kids; Monday and Thursday evening band concerts in Bar Harbor's village green during the summer months; plays at the Acadia Repertory theater; wonderful little shops in each village that showcase the work of local artisans; and any number of restaurants and bars (some of the best are open year-round) that feature lobster and other locally caught seafood dishes, as well as award-winning and locally-brewed beer and wine.
