You will love the tile bathroom and open kitchen area. There is a garbage disposal and dishwasher for your use. Of course you will have laundry facilities. We, Carol and Jim Ashmore are excited to be opening our home to you. Carol was born and raised in Traverse City while I came from Stockbridge. Returning to Leelanau County has always been a dream for us.
Jim Ashmore purchased this house in 2012
Our roots in this area go back to early 1900's when Carol's mother was born in Northport. This are with it beautiful natural attractions has always been a magnet for us. We enjoy walking the many beaches and looking for petosky stone, riding our bikes and sometimes just going for a ride.
We're sure you will enjoy the morning sun streaming in the living room window and the evening sun warming the back yard patio. Within walking distance you will find three very different places to eat, a distillery, a winery, a coffee shop and a pastry shop. Sutton's Bay and Leeland are within 5 miles and Traverse City is 20 miles. Perhaps, a trip to the National Lakeshore in Glenn Arbor or the nearby Casino. And of course the many places and activities on local water sites.
I cannot say enough about how great our vacation was while staying at "Against the Wind." The owners met us upon arrival and showed us around the house and made sure we would be comfortable during our stay. It's such a cozy and welcoming place. It is like "coming home" to a place you've never lived. You will instantly feel comfortable and relaxed and it will be hard to leave when your vacation is over. The owners have provided everything you could possibly need during your stay, right down to dental floss, cell phone chargers and oh yeah, wine (just be sure to replace any bottle you sample)! The kitchen is very well equipped and there is even an old fashioned milk shake mixer, and yes, we used it! What fun! We have stayed in several vacation rentals over the years and this is the first time there were absolutely no instructions of what you needed to do before you left. When I asked about this, the owner told me that he did not want people to have to "work" while on vacation. Just leave the keys and go your way. I did strip the beds, just because I felt like I should do something! The location at Lake Leelanau is perfectly located for easy access to all that the Leelanau Peninsula has to offer. If you're looking for fancy and high class, you won't find it here, but what you will find is an extremely clean, cozy and comfortable home where you can just relax! Isn't that what vacation is all about?
Hard to believe anyone would open their house to complete strangers and make them feel as welcome as Jim & his wife did. So many extras included & the thoughtfulness put forth by them was unbelievable. Thank-you so much & the next time will have to be a longer stay. Thank you from Iowa. P.S. WE couldn't find the guest book to sign it or we would have left you a personal thank you. Terry & family.
The owners should disclose that this is not a single-family residence. We were shocked to learn, not from the owners' admission but by our own discovery, that there is an occupied living area (separate entrance) in the basement, making it more of a duplex than a single-family residence. The fact that the owners never disclosed this information was unsettling; they explained nearly everything else about the house. And there were some inconveniences that came along with the duplex-style living situation. Though the house is promoted as non-smoking, we could smell the basement residents' cigarette smoke (presumably through the house duct work). We could also hear talking and music (though not rowdy), often late at night. This is why my rating is 3/5 stars.
Otherwise, the house is clean, well-stocked, and cozy. The location is a great home-base for activities around Leelanau county. The owners, who met us upon arrival, were very nice, so nice that it is with some hesitation that I write the negative contents of this review. But I felt mislead that this was going to be a single-family residence, and I think the fact that it is a dual-family residence should be noted for future renters. It was upsetting that such an important fact about the house was left out of all description and discussion.
We had a wonderful weekend here. Against the Wind was clean, comfortable, full of amenities, and well-maintained. And the owners were so friendly and helpful. Lake Leelanau is a great spot - centrally located and close to a lot of beautiful beaches, restaurants, and activities. We'll definitely be back.
My family and I rented this property for a long weekend getaway. Before arriving to the rental, the owner called to see how old our daughter was and what books she might like to read. Upon our arrival, the owners took us on a tour through the house, went through binders that they had created for their guests on things to do in the area and a little book about their home. They pointed out a shelf that they had put books on for my 18 month old to read and look through. The house was decorated beautifully and was so cozy! They had wine that they told us we were able to drink if we'd like, if we drank more than 1 bottle they asked we please replace it (it's only fair!) They also had the house stocked with everything you could need- extra toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, bodywash, laundry detergent/softener for your clothes if you needed to use their washer and dryer, pots/pans/grill, etc! They were so friendly and immediately likeable. The home was immaculate and and so charming! It is also centrally located to everything in the area, whether it's a trip to Suttons Bay, Leland, Glen Arbor or Northport, every thing was between 15-20 minutes away. The little town of Lake Leelanau was also charming. It had a a great organic restaurant to grab a quick sandwich, the new vodka distillery, Dick's Pour House which had great burgers and pizza, as well as a very nice restaurant Bella Fortuna which we will go to on our next trip! The beach in Suttons Bay was only about a 5 minute drive and was absolutely gorgeous. My family had an amazing time there (all 6 of us!) The pull out couch was actually very comfortable. We had cable, internet and all the comforts of home. We spent 4 amazing days here and will be hopefully coming back this fall to look for our own piece of heaven to buy in the area!
