Our family of four has enjoyed making this circa 1900 row house an oasis for family time and entertaining. We love our walks down to the National Mall and to the nearby Eastern Market and enjoy meals and relaxation in our patio/garden and on our carriage house roof deck.

Sue Bloom purchased this house in 2004

Why Sue Bloom chose Capitol Hill

Family of 6 Explores DC for the First Time

  • 5 of 5
Our family of six (four kids ages seven to 17) stayed 10 days at this unique home in the Capital Hill district. We chose it for its size, location and great kitchen and we weren't disappointed! We found everything clean, well-stocked, comfortable and relaxing. It's an old home with a unique feel to it. There's also a rooftop patio to enjoy with a drink. I don't recommend it for the very young (toddlers) or very old due to stairwells and occasional up/down steps in the home. The master bath has been redone and is quite nice. DC is definitely a walking town, supplemented with public transport. The home is located a 10 minute walk from Union Station, which is very reasonable. We started our day with this walk - a nice routine. I was concerned about our seven year old, but she did great. We got the SmarTrip card at the metro station and would refill it as needed. It works for the metro and the metro bus. There's a bus stop near the house that goes to Eastern Market -- we took it twice to the market for fresh produce, meat, & great cheese. From Union Station we hit all the major sites either by walking additionally on toward the mall or by taking the metro. We visited ALL the Smithsonians, the Mall, The Spy Museum, Ford's Theatre & Museum, Newseum, the National Archives, the Capital, and the White House. Several times we walked from the Capital side of the mall all the way back to the house, 20-30 minutes. There's a corner grocery along this walk in the neighborhood. We popped in there every other day and found them friendly and convenient. We discovered Uber and hired an Uber Black SUV on several occasions -- from the far end of the mall home and also to go to/from Georgetown. That worked great for our group of six! We rented a car on two occasions to visit Mt. Vernon and Monticello. It was more expensive from Union Station, less so from Reagan National. We took the metro to Reagan National (30 min) for the car and thought it worth it. However, when we had the car from Union Station, we also took it to the large grocery store to load up on food for the house. We ate breakfast every day and dinner at the house most evenings. We ate lunch out each day. Best value lunch was at Monticello; at Pret A Manger in DC. The DC Trolley tour of the Monuments at night was terrific! If you stay at this home, you'll have a wonderful visit. We lucked out on weather in August, though, it was mid-80s and not too humid! Enjoy!

We enjoyed our stay at your house. It was very spacious and accommodated our family of 6. Our kids really enjoyed the ping pong table & TV in the basement. The kitchen was nice and looked just as the pictures showed. The location was nice and only about 8 blocks from Union Station. The master bath shower was relaxing with its dual shower heads after a long day of sight seeing. The only complaint was that with 6 of us in the house there was not enough bath towels & we had to do laundry almost daily.
I would definitely recommend staying here. We will definitely be coming back at some point.
