Ocean views from the bedroom and living room.Full kitchen,indoor laundry,large lava rock BBQ.The ocean is less than 100 feet from the front door.
I am a semi retired engineer from Santa Cruz Ca.Most of my family live here in the islands so I thought I would join them since I love it here so much.
Owner/Property Manager purchased this house in 1999
I vacationed here on the Big Island back in 1991 the first time and stayed with family then.In one week we saw lava flows,snow on Mauna Kea mountain,observatories,water falls etc...The seed was planted and now here I am.I love it here.
I looked at many properties and when I found this one I knew right away that I found the right one.The neighborhood and location were a big plus.
While the description of this property is colorful and inviting, it does not compare to what you get. Yes it is in a quiet neighborhood with friendly folks walking by and it has a wonderful view of the ocean 100 feet away, with powerful swells booming onto the lava cliff (no beach) 24/7 but that is where the description breaks down. It does not have sleeping for 4, it has only one standard size double bed and three older “hotel vintage” couches. It will sleep 2…period. There was no telephone service, cell phone coverage dropped out a mile and a half inland, and there is no wifi or internet available. The satellite linked tv is an older crt portable (yes there are still some working models apparently) unit with a 15” screen and poor reception—making it hard to watch the Olympics in the evening. You should plan on being off the grid while you are there. We didn’t see an iron or ironing board-not that we needed one but the description of amenities for this property are less than forthcoming. The only closet is in the dining/kitchen/laundry area (no place to hang clothes in the bedroom)and I have had larger bathrooms and showers on cruise ships. Dishes and utensils are Spartan and barely adequate for minimal meal preparation and the refrigerator was very dirty on top and dirty inside. It easily reminded us of a college student’s crash pad with seemingly no effort at decorating or furnishing at a level appropriate for out of state or out of country visitors and appeared to be put together from a converted garage. Ventilation is limited to one ceiling fan and one moveable floor fan and the living and sleeping spaces were always stuffy and stale. The outdoor grill is quaint lava rock but should probably be considered for a health code violation because of rusting grills and weeds growing in the fire pit. It needed a lot of TLC. The old adage “you get what you pay for” applies to this unit—if you need modest creature comforts and don’t want to feel like you are camping this is probably not the place for you. We won’t stay here again.
Very quiet, close to the ocean location, except for the roar of the waves just across a country lane. Very friendly people walk by, owner very friendly and quiet and there is a small outdoor lanai with a table and chairs just outside the entrance, with a lava barbeque that needs a little updating. A few geckos greeted us in the tidy and clean basement suite as we entered and the air inside was very stuffy and needed airing out. A bowl of fruit was on the table and the full kitchen was well stocked with slightly older, but very sufficient appliances and was the only room with a ceiling fan. It also doubled as the laundry area. Bathroom is very tiny with a small shower and the bedroom was large with a great view of the ocean through an open lot across the road. It had a double bed and a moveable, pedestal fan for ventilation. The living area was stocked with two couches that were not really suited for sleeping on and a very small older television with cable reception and a DVD player. No WiFi inside the suite and we couldn't get internet either. There was not much air flow in the house even with the windows open. The oceanside location was suitable for us as we used it mostly for sleeping and during the day we ventured out to the many scenic vistas and adventures that were nearby...warm pools, tide pools, volcano, botanical gardens, Hilo area, nature walks, parks, wave watching and many more. It is also suitable for anyone who just wants a place to chill out and enjoy a nice quiet neighborhood with no real frills...no swimming pool or resort amenities, no large screen TV to watch and no WiFi. This is a chance to be part of the community with no time share hustlers and about a half hour drive to town facilities. It is quiet and relaxing but may not be for everyone.
This place is economical & on the Ocean. If those are the most important things for you, then this is the place for you. That was my criteria when I booked this rental.
First the good things (and there are more good than not-so-good):
* Property clean & well-maintained.
* Owner very helpful in suggesting sites & answering questions, but stayed to himself.
* There is a table & chairs out front to enjoy coffee in the morning & wine in the evening (and listen to the waves, birds, & frogs).
* Friendly neighbors walk by.
* There is a BBQ out front (very nice)!
* Kitchen well equipped.
* Laundry in the facility well equipped.
* Nice location in the Puna district. Close to warm ponds, farmers markets, volcano, 40 mins. south of Hilo.
That being said, there were a few issues:
* Internet - there is a community internet with poor connectivity that fades in and out (only worked outside). No WiFi in the facility.
* Ventilation - on the ground floor with sliding glass doors. We locked the doors when leaving, so came back to a stuffy place. Only one ceiling fan (in the kitchen) & one pedestal fan to move between the bedroom and living room.
* Sleeping accommodations: 1 double/full bed & day bed - in the bedroom; 2 couches in the living room. Will not sleep 4 comfortably (only 2).
whale watching,lava flows,beach activities,worlds largest observatories.Many tide pools filled with sealife and giant corals.
