It's just a quick drive to the market or to the historic town of Makawao, where you will find boutique style shopping, yoga and many great dining options. Zip-lining and lava tubes are also close by.

Caveat Emptor

My husband and I have rented over eight short term vacation rentals over the past 10 years prior to renting this property. We have never had any problems with the property, nor with the business end of things.

This property is very well located, and is furnished with high end furnishings and appointments, as advertised. The climate is wonderful at this elevation. Unfortunately, it is not as clean and well maintained as one might expect. For example, the Viking range has not been deep cleaned over the years, and the out door upholstery is dirty and stained. The floors were dirty.There are also numerous odd holes in the ceilings of the bedrooms and Living area with wires hanging down. There was no book or welcome sheet explaining the house, the TV's, etc, nor the area.

The ad contains and implies some inaccuracies. For example, there is no internet access unless your cell phone works well enough to make your own hot spot. This was a very important need for us. The beautiful driveway in the photos unfortunately ends 500 feet overland from the access road. We did not know this, and rented a convertible instead of an all wheel drive vehicle. Thank goodness it did not rain.

We would have found all these issues and idiosyncracies tolerable, as the house is very comfortable, and the views spectacular, except for the owner's business practices. First, he insisted upon our entering a private agreement with him. As we were booking only a week before we left for Hawaii, we agreed. We mailed our signed copy and agreement to him in California. When I asked for a copy for my records, he emailed a photo of the envelope that I had sent the materials in. We had misgivings, but decided that he was just a bit eccentric , and continued on to Maui. Of course, by then our check for the rental, and the security deposit had been cashed.

Second, and the most problematic for us, was the failure to return our security deposit. No claim of damage was alleged. For nearly five weeks after we left the property we were told some version of "the check is in the mail". Once he claimed that the check was lost and he would have to put a stop payment order on it. We finally received our security deposit 4 1/2 weeks after we left, and the check was dated 13 days after we left the property.
